That's the nicest 4.5 I've seen.

Sweet card!

That's weird how the "A" characters in Al's name are filled in -- is that due to dust removal on the scanner? Regardless, that's a stellar Kaline!

I also really like the cartoon and the story it tells on the back of this card...

Scanner dust removal does that to the A's. does it all the time to 51 Bowmans too.

Yes..Dust removal feature did that. I can scan it again and open the A's up, but I already filed the Kaline back in the vault! :p

Where is the flaw that brings an obvious EX/NM+ (maybe better) down to a VG/EX? These are the kind of cards I love buying (usually raw); minor, insignificant crease on an otherwise beautiful card.

Great card! I have a couple of Mantles that look way better than their technical grade.

minor, insignificant crease on an otherwise beautiful card.

That's just it. The card has no creases! If I had to venture a guess as to why the low grade, on the reverse, there are a couple very faint roller marks. The 1954 set was not known for their pristine quality control. You will find the cards with roller marks, print lines, etc.
