Hello. My name is Gary... and I'm addicted to HOF snapshot photos...lol

It started about a year ago when I purchased a snapshot photo of Joe Cronin. This was removed from Max O'Leary(Bat Boy of the Red Sox) 1938 scrapbook and apparently a friend of Joe Cronin based upon all the autographs and personal memorabilia found in this old scrapbook.

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/scamehorn32/HOF%20snapshots/KGrHqVoUFDCYT-WkyBQKO0PbLw60_57_zps9da904bb.jpg

Ever since...I've been hooked. This will be eventually passed down to my son. Then he can start placing his photos of potential HOFers baseball player in and continue it.My collection isn't grand, but it's a start! I've got 55 HOFer's snapshot in my first year.Since I've been a member, I have discovered I'm not the only one who collects HOF snapshot photo. Some players, I've never seen a snapshot photo of. I'm hoping this thread will help others who have the same interest to share what they have.

Gary,
Great idea for a thread.

Here's some of mine

1927 Yankees Team photo. Very possibly the only not official team photo in existence. The guy I purchased them from stated his father was at spring training that year and took the picture himself.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/lordstan/My%20Lou%20Gehrig%20stuff/LG-1930sautographswithkids.jpg

These two are tricky.
They look like pro shots, but are in snapshot form.

Not my area of expertise, but I have a Duke Snider snapshot photo (presumably from 1944, although he's wearing a Brooklyn Dodgers jersey) and a pretty awesome 1973 Dave Parker minor league photo (while with the Charleston Charlies) - I know, I know, not vintage and not a HOFer, but I like the image, okay!!

Mark--Those Lou photos are killer awesome! Love the one of him signing autographs. The 1927 team photo is unbelievable! Also, I've never seen a snapshot so clear.Any story behind those?

Dan- Thank for posting that snapshot of Wahoo Sam! He's one of the players I've never seen a snapshot form! Awesome! Love the Dazzy as well!

Graig- Thank you so much for the kind words!

Derek- Love the pics! Is that Duke from the Snider Estate?

Packs- Thanks for sharing the Ted Williams and Chick Hafey! Chick Hafey is another player I haven't seen a snapshot photo! The Williams photo is beautiful with the autograph. That look on his face is priceless, lol.

I have posted these before but it seems this post is appropriate for them.

When my children were in grade school my daughter had a teacher who was getting married. Since her husband was a huge baseball fan her wedding present to him were some snap shots someone in her family tool decades earlier of various Cubs players. Somehow she had heard that I was a collector and asked me to look at them and give my opinion of value. Since I didnt know snap shot values I gave her a ball park figure, helped her figure out who the players were and tried to but them from her! She declined my offer but did provide me photo copies of the snaps that turned out much better than I thought they would. Here are the snaps she gave me.

I cannot remember who the players are right now. I have to find the original copy but feel free to offer guesses.

Barnstorming Babe Ruth at Borchert Field in Milwaukee in October 1931.

Borchert Field = home of the American Association Milwaukee Brewers!

Babe traveled the country with his Universal Stars team playing exhibition games.

Older coach on the right is former player Stoney McGlynn.

Coach on the left is Johnnie Hughes.

I don't know the ID of Babe's teammates in the dugout - any help is appreciated.

I received as a gift awesome gift an early 1930s Milwaukee Brewers scrapbook made by a Milwaukee teenager. Lots of newspaper cut out photos, box scores, a few tickets and one actual photo...this one.

Great thread! I love snapshots.
Here are a few of my HOF snappers:

HOF Nolan Ryan in his rookie season 1968 outside Shea Stadium. This photo was actually signed the same year in blue ballpoint pen. This remains one of my very favorite in my personal collection.

HOF "King" Carl Hubbell AKA "The Meal Ticket" vintage signed snapshot.

One more of Hubbell. This one was shot at Wrigley Field. Note where his left arm ends up after releasing his famous screwball.

Not a HOF'er, but certainly in the HOF because of his unparalleled feat of throwing 2 consecutive back-to-back no-hitters in 1938- Johnny Vander Meer.

The first snapshot was actually taken at Cincinnati Crosley Field and signed in 1937, the year before Vandy's breakout rookie season where he threw the double no-no.

The second snapshot features the on-field celebration following Vandy's 2nd consecutive no-hitter on June 15, 1938. Vandy no-hit the home town Dodgers at Ebbetts Field- the first night game at Ebbetts.

I have been trying to thin out the collection a bit and really haven't added much to the collection in the last year and a half, but every now and then I see an item that I gotta have. The Wagner photo is one of those items. As much as I was drawn to the image of Wagner, something about the field and the background with the trees & houses just jumped out at me.

BTW, you're right, wouldn't want to play "Mercy" with ole Hans.

As a funny, insightful aside that came to mind while enjoying the heck out of this thread…

Q: How can you tell Sandy Koufax is Jewish?

A: Because he's signing autographs with his left hand.

When you look at the tremendous lefties from the old days, like Babe Ruth, Stan Musial, Whitey Ford and others, they were (literally) forced to use their right hands when writing. Catholic schools in the eastern United States were especially notorious for this practice as the left hand was considered sinister (in Latin, 'sinister' is defined as "on the left-hand side"). So when you see photographs of these players giving their autographs to fans, it's amazing seeing them using their right hands. I was especially taken by the photo of Whitey Ford. He, like me, is from Astoria, Queens. My southpaw sister was also forced to use her right hand by the nuns there. Chilling.

I'm sure this fact isn't news to most people around these parts, but it's worth mentioning.

This is my favorite, which I recently added to my collection. Chief Bender in March 1916 (backstamped date) in spring training with the Phillies, the only year he appeared with them. It so beautifully captures the era and the character of the man. Notice the field hand appears to be holding Bender's glove. In poor condition, but priceless to me.

My father, a natural southpaw (and a Jew), was, in the mid nineteen twenties, forced to write with his right hand by the secular school teachers in his Bronx public school.

I like shots of guys in uniforms other than how we normally picture them - usually either early in their career or later in their career, when they've moved on to another team. I picked up a great group of photos this week and it included a Joe Torre snap shot from his brief stint in Louisville in 1961.

GoCubsGo32 - Great shots of Aaron and Mathews!

Here are a few more of Eddie that I found in my stash:

--A cool shot taken by a fan sititing in RF at the 1957 World Series, as Mathews hits a game-winnning homer in his direction;

--With Charlie Grimm (L) and Joe Adcock (R) joking around;

--Doing an interview in spring training circa 1958-59;

--Arriving in Hawaii

Here are two Ruth ones I just acquired at the White Plains show. I really like the one where he is holding the bat. The other one is really small, but the price was right. I am really enjoying seeing everyone's photos.

Chris, great Rose photos! I'm curious where they originated from. There's a seller on eBay with a couple thousand of spring training snapshots that seem to span the early 60's through the mid 70's. Stylistically your Rose photos are very similar. I wonder if they come from the same collection? I purchased many of the 71 Pirates from the seller but alas no Clemente, Stargell, or Ellis were to be had. I'm curious as to the story behind them and the identity of the photographer who took them. Nonetheless, those Rose photos are beautiful.

Mike, I believe Al Prince is the name of the photographer you are looking for.

A couple of his photos also appear in the book Baseball Fantography, which was probably inevitable given his prolific output and that it is a book centered around baseball snapshot photos.

Mike - a lot of these kinds of snap shots were actually taken by the team photographers of the day. Based on the poses and the style of the shot, I am 99% sure the Rose shots originated from the Reds photog of the early 60s. Could have come from someone else, such as a UPI or AP photog, but the style and poses are the same as others of that era that came from the teams.

Unfortunately for many of the teams (but fortunately for collectors of today), many of these were released years ago. More tragically, much of this kind of material was simply thrown in dumpsters when teams moved to new stadiums in the 1960s and '70s. I know a few collectors - and some very high-profile dealers - were "in the right place at at the right time" to take advantage of these situations. And I'm not talking about just the photos - player contracts, uniforms, etc were often thrown out in haste. That might be where a lot of these photos are originating from on eBay (I'm not sure of the seller you're referring to).

Hope that helps.

Thanks Brad that would explain the quality of the photos composition which often does not appear to be amateurish. I know times were different then but I cannot imagine players posing so willingly for a fan.

Lance - was Al Prince a team photog? There were several popular photogs in the 1950s-70s who made a living doing freelance spring training tours every year.

Not that I know of, at least not in an "official team photographer" capacity, though I could be wrong. I admit to not knowing much about him other than he is now deceased, and most of his photos that I have seen have a similar composition and tend to be in the 3-1/2"x3-1/2" snapshot format. Here is a shot of Tommie Aaron that I had once upon a time that was attributed to him.

Al Prince, I think you are correct. The knowledge base here never ceases to amaze me! He seemed to favor the hands on hips pose. I posted a few of these awhile back but will do so again for comparison sake. The handwriting on the reverse is the same as well.

First, Hoyt Wilhelm signing what appears to be a dirty softball (?) for a young fan.

Then, continuing my search for players/coaches in uniforms that you don't normally see them in, four snap shots of Paul Waner as Milwaukee Braves hitting coach at Spring Training in 1957.
