View Full Version : FINAL----HOF Ballot- Submit your own!

UnVme7

First off, if this needs to go in a different area, feel free to move it Leon.

I figured it would be a fun idea to submit our own votes for this years baseball HOF. I thought that setting up a forum poll would be the easiest and most accurate way of doing it, but I figured that some of you will be voting for those outside the normal top 10, which is the max for a poll on here I believe.

A few rules:

1) You can vote for as little as 1 player or a max of up to 10.
2) Only list the names, not your opinions of why you think they should get in
3) You are aloud to edit your votes up until we get closer to the final announcement.
4) Do not be judgemental of someones choices. If someone would like to vote on Mike Timlin, we might not agree, but be respectful.
5) Once we get close to the official announcement, we will post our own results.

Below are the names on the ballot:

Jack Morris
Jeff Bagwell
Tim Raines
Lee Smith
Curt Schilling
Roger Clemens
Edgar Martinez
Alan Trammell

1) Greg Maddox (Definitely- A lock even though he's a c***) I'm a poet and don't even know it
2) Tom Glavine (Definitely)
3) Frank Thomas (Definitely the best hitting big man that I ever have seen in my lifetime)

I also like Jack Morris (The pitcher of the 1980's decade), Craig Biggio and Edgar Martinez as very strong possibilities.

While I am sure Piazza will get his share of votes, being the best hitting catcher of all time (and arguably, I would put at least Yogi and Bench ahead of him), he cannot make up for being the worst defensive catcher of all time.

Piazza (someday I'll have to start a thread to see what people have against him!)

I'd include the following, who I don't think are on the level above:
Jeff Kent
Biggio
Mussina.

I love Jack Morris, but just am not sure about him being a HOFer. Same with Raines.
I think the Shilling (years of dominance) vs. Mussina (years of steady quality) debate should be talked about more!!

Harder than I thought. There's close to 20 guys on that list that I think should be in the HOF. These are just my top 10. BTW, I would vote for the PED guys..

Just for fun, I'll also write in: Albert Belle..

Anyways, given the log-jam, I think voters will put in a larger class this year, to clear things out moving forward.. Piazza, Biggio, Glavine, Maddux, Thomas and possibly Bagwell all get in this year. Glavine and Maddux go in as teammates, which is another reason that I think Baggy gets in this year, I think he'll tag-along with Biggio(although, I could see this happening next year).

Thank you to those that have participated so far. We'll let this go end of day on the 5th and we'll post final results.

For anyone that is interested, there are currently 97 known ballots that have been made public so far. Out of those 97, there would be 4 elected- Maddux, Glavine, Thomas and Biggio, with Piazza very close behind. All 97 had Maddux, and of course we all know some numbnuts didn't vote for him. But as of right now, on the 97 that we know, Maddux is on every single one.

Maybe they should grade on a curve. When a DUH! vote like Maddux doesn't get 100% of the vote then you know there are some voters who shouldn't be voting.

You know, I'm big on wondering how guys like Musial and such don't get 100% but sort of understand with Maddux. Is he a HOF lock? SURE! But with this ballot, crammed with players who are deserving (or at least deserving of a few years' discussion,) then I could see myself voting for 10 other guys, knowing full well Maddux will get in anyway.

Not saying this is the right thing to do, but I'd understand it.

This is why I say it should be done on a curve. I wonder if that is why Biggio didn't get those extra two votes, some just assumed he would be in and they could put their votes somewhere else. It only takes 2 guys thinking that way in this case.

I believe they take anyone who meets the criteria, which would be what, not on the banned list and played at least 8 seasons.

almostdone
01-08-2014, 04:57 PM
The criteria to be on the HOFERS ballot is to have played for at least ten complete seasons and be retired for at least five full seasons along with not being on the banned list. If a person receives at least 5% of the votes cast they will roll over to the next years ballot. If not they are taken off the ballot. 75% is the minimum needed to gain entrance into the hall of fame.

I think Pettitte is on the fence, he did admit taking a PED.

perezfan
01-10-2014, 03:10 PM
I would give Pettite a 35 - 40% chance. And that's across his entire term of eligibility. Post-season achievements and playing most years in NY helps - PED factor hurts...

Maybe the passage of time will soften things, and his honest admission will be well-embraced, as opposed to most others' elusiveness, lying and deception (McGwire/Bonds/Clemens/Palmeiro/Sosa/A-Rod).

But if you are asking about first-ballot, I would say less than a 5% chance.

HRBAKER

He'll never get in via the sportswriters IMO bc he either lied initially or later about Clemens.

I am sure I'm not the oldest here but at age 65 I have been a basball fan since I was 7 years old. As a fan I profess though a Dodger fan I love all the teams and all the players. I ask those of you who are against the PED players what were you doing the day Mark McGwire broke the home record and how did you react? Yes Bonds and Clemens and McGwire and Sosa took a substance the sports writers knew about, the owners knew about, even the players knew but yet none of them and my guess is that those here never stood up and yelled "HEY THEY ARE CHEATING". Shoeless Joe Jackson cheated yet many here want him in the hall. Pete Rose bet on baseball but in my book deserves the hall. I VOTE for the PED player who spent many of their years playing fairly to get into the Hall. That's my opinion and I respect yours.

Karl Mattson
01-10-2014, 08:33 PM
I ask those of you who are against the PED players what were you doing the day Mark McGwire broke the home record and how did you react?

I was yelling HEY THEY'RE CHEATING, and I was doing it all year long in 1998. A friend and I had an email dialogue going throughout the year discussing what a shame it all was. I remember sending him scans of McGwire's and Sosa's earlier baseball cards and the two of us joking about the 60 pounds of muscle they miraculously added. I remember us joking about Sosa's inability to reach down for ground balls hit to him in the outfield; I remember feeling badly for the Maris family when it was obvious that the HR record would not just be broken but obliterated.

My friend and I had a similar email dialogue 3 years later regarding Bonds, only I rooted FOR Bonds. Because I thought it further invalidated the "record", and because I figured it might result in some kind of investigation and change, which it eventually did.

Later, when Bonds was chasing Aaron, I was convinced there was a nod-and-a-wink among managers to walk Bonds like crazy in order to slow down his progress - to delay his setting the record until they could find just cause to suspend him, or until his body broke down and he retired. Sadly, Bonds prevailed, however MLB did manage to keep him from 3,000 hits and possibly the all-time runs, RBIs and EBH records.

I fully see your point. I myself believe the fans were entitled to a game without cheating as well but you or I or any of the fans could not have stopped it. Yes we all knew what was going on but MLB and the commissioner and the owners and the baseball writers and announcers who could have made a difference didn't! Clemens and Bonds among others were some of the greatest athletes prior to PED. I believe Clemens as well as Bonds and others were like kids in a Candy store in that baseball is a short career and this was a way to stay in the limelight longer and to be productive. YES I thought it was wrong but I also think there is a place in the hall for these athletes.

They had it all before they started. It was their choice and now what they are dealing with is part of the bargain they made. Nobody but their pride, ego and greed made them do it. Not the fans, not the Commissioner, not the writers, not the non-doping teammates. Your point is a good one about no one stepping forward (sans Canseco for multiple purposes) but they each are responsible for their own behavior. The players are responsible for the mess, not the writers.

Jeff, I don't want to sound like what they did is right because it wasn't. I do think that at the time Mcgwire and Sosa were banging out homers fans were flocking to the stadiums filling seats and not only making owners rich but if you recall fan attendance had been dwindling and interest fading. Point being no one in baseball wanted to say anything because they were saving and more important bringing back fan interest. Maybe we should toss Gaylord Perry and Burlleigh Grimes, Ed Walsh and a few others out of the Hall for throwing a spitball! That was cheating as well. Do you think Don Drysdale who was infamous for throwing at batters and hitting them? Don hit 154 batters, the great Walter Johnson hit 205, Nolan Ryan 158 BUT Koufax who pitched in pain isn't even in the top ten of hitting batters. Do you think some of those guys cheated. My point is for me and me alone, I cheered all the PED guys at the time and was happy to see new and younger fans coming out and watching the game. I say cut some slack, vote them in and if you have to say they cheated for a period of time then say it and get over it.

What were we supposed to do? Stop going to the games or cheering bc some of the players decided to cheat? I don't feel compelled to cut them any slack just bc I kept going to or watching the games. Not arguing with you at all, but this is on them alone to me.

Nate,
Thanks for starting this thread.
FWIW, congrats to Maddox, Glavine and Thomas.
All 3 deserve to be in the HOF in my opinion. :)

Yeah you bet!

It was actually fairly accurate as far as who was elected and who fell off. Good job everyone, and thanks for participating.
