View Full Version : What is your best card you added to your collection in 2013?

There's a few weeks left in 2013 - I'd love to see the best of what folks have added to their collections this year. Or are you spending these last few weeks still searching for that prize?

Feel free to define 'best' in any way you'd like - doesn't need to mean most valuable, but could be scarcest, something you've searched for a while to find, etc.

These two Cobbs are tied for my favorite of the year....

....I don't think I'll ever have a better pick-up if I collect pre-war for another lifetime...
.
...this unused Burke-stamped RPPC postcard of his ROY year wasn't even listed in the description of the contents of the scrapbook .

...my jaw dropped when I turned the page and this was sitting there , held in place by four of those little corner triangular things .

.. I don't expect to ever top this. Sometimes ya juss gets lucky.....

It would definitely be these cards depicting Fred Wehrell. The first is his T209-II card, and the second is a postcard (unknown producer) that reproduces the T209-II pose. I acquired these two in 2013. The third card (2011) shows the same pose in his T210-5 card. Sorry to show three cards, but I thought they were interesting historically. I suspect, too, that the postcards are a bit on the scarce side although I do know where two of them reside, wink-wink!

Enjoy,
Mike

I just got back into the hobby this year and have only been concentrating on Pre-War since Feb. I decided to start with T206 and E121 sets. These are probably my two "best" from those:

1887 N172 Ewing

Great card Jay!, worthy of a thread all its own. Too bad it didn't have a zero number on it that fills a hole within the existing list of missing numbers. So the books now need to be re-written a bit in that Ewing was previously believed to be the only GQ player in which an 1887 OJ didn't exist. Very cool indeed. I wonder if his other poses will ever surface as 1887 OJs. Rare card variation for sure.

This is a tough question, looking through some scans since January, I didn't get much. It was a slow year. I guess the coolest pickup for me was this Cy Young card, since I like collecting T206's with crop marks and he is the best one I have, plus it's a full crop and not just one line like most are.

Beautiful OJs Kevin, while the Collins - Lowell is a tough team change (missed that team change on that pose in the book) and condition rarity, I prefer the Vaughn with its player/pose rarity and beautiful contrast with huge angle cut right border. What a beauty!

I'm going to break the rule and post several items that I was able to add to my core collection over 2013 and give thanks to those who made it possible. I've split them into two pics, the large items and the small items.

Among others, thank you Jay Miller, Gary Passamonte, Ted Brown (N175), Toby Peterson (both N172 Conway cards), and Brian Hodes (N172 Deacon White). The Deacon is off-condition but can't be too choosy when trying to collect all the poses. The other items came from eBay and auction houses.

I was able to pick up a couple Detroit scorecards this year but the attached copy is from a home game in 1887. Finding Detroit scorecards with Detroit on the road is easy, finding a home game scorecard, tough.

The Sam Thompson cabinet is nice but hope to trade it for a Detroit example down the road (or buy Detroit/sell Philly). It has been a great 2013 and its not over yet!

I finally added the T207 Ward Miller about a month ago...completes my T207 Cubs team set!

On to 2014, when I hope to tackle the T202 Cubs in a meaningful way, and perhaps start the T204 Cubs, but that one will be a very long project

Some amazing acquisitions across this board. Really humbling the quality of collections people here have.

Here's one of my favourites for the year. In the Hall of Fame, but not for the sport with which he is pictured. Nevers went to University very close to where I'm currently living, and, of course, the tab on the bottom is a great addition to making this card a special card in my collection:

Wow, amazing stuff. I lost count of the Pirates cards in this thread...I am humbled by the caliber of collection I see here. Since I collect a variety of stuff I thought I would pull my favorite of each type. My modest contributions:

Baseball card, prewar: A newly-cataloged Adam Hats card that I've posted here so many times that people are certainly sick of it, but I am very glad to have it:

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibitman/miscellaneous4/websize/1930s%20Adam%20Hats%20H815-2%20Gomez_%20Lefty.jpg

Baseball card, postwar: 1954 Johnston Cookies Hank Aaron RC:

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibitman/miscellaneous4/websize/1954%20Johnston%20Cookies%20Aaron.jpg

Baseball memorabilia: A Lefty Gomez matchbook from the 1930s Adam Hats celebrity contest:

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibitman/miscellaneous4/websize/Adam%20Hats%20Matchbook%20Gomez.jpg

Baseball autograph: picked this up at the National:

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibitman/miscellaneous4/websize/1974%20Laughlin%20Johnson_%20Judy%20signed.jpg

Surfing/swimming: I have wanted this PC of the Duke for a long time, finally got one:

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibitman/miscellaneous4/large/1920s%20RPPC%20Kahanamoku_%20Duke.jpg

Soccer: This Pele card is my best soccer pick-up ever [1968 Crack from Argentina]:

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibitman/miscellaneous4/websize/1968%20Crack%20Pele.jpg

Favorite hockey piece: 1964 postmarked Bobby Hull JD MCCarthy PC:

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibitman/miscellaneous4/websize/Hull%20McCarthy%20PC.jpg

Favorite basketball piece: 1960 Wilt Chamberlain team issue

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibitman/basketball/websize/1960%20Chamberlain%20team%20issue.jpg

Favorite football piece: got this in a collection of 1950s-1960s cards I picked up. My favorite set of the 1950s-1960s FB, and Bart Starr was the #1 card in 1968, and the card had the special horizontal design only used for the Packers and Raiders Super Bowl teams:

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibitman/miscellaneous4/websize/1968%20Starr.jpg

Favorite nonsport: Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman! 1957 George Reeves fan issue with neat DC comic advertising:

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibitman/miscellaneous4/large/1957%20George%20Reeves%20Superman%20Advertising%20 PC.jpg

Favorite autograph: Nigel "The Dark Destroyer" Benn: He doesn't sign cards except on special occasions. A friend got this for me at a HOF event:

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibitman/miscellaneous4/Benn.jpg

Favorite boxing card: Tough choosing here but I'd have to go with this 1920s Benny Leonard restaurant PC. I'd been looking for one for years:

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibitman/boxingpostcards/large/1920s%20Leonard_%20Benny%20restaurant%20PC.jpg

Favorite boxing memorabilia: Again, a brutal choice, but I gotta go with this ticket from Jim Jeffries' boxing venue just up the block from my office here in Burbank. Again, an item I'd been hoping to find for a very long time:

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibitman/boxingpremiums/websize/Jeffries%20Barn%20ticket.jpg

And last of all, oddest oddball item is this rodeo PC of future movie star Hoot Gibson learning the hard way that if a horse doesn't want to be ridden, odds are the horse will win. I just love the image:

Traded for these two low-grade 33 Goudeys this week. Not much to see from the grading perspective, but check out the backs.

A 1930s collector named Bucky Jackson took it upon himself to modify and update every card he owned. Here's what he did.

1. Trimmed off any "BIG LEAGUE GUM" label from the front
2. Punched out Goudey's © notice
3. Scraped off the Goudey tag line
4. Signed his name with quotes on "Bucky"
5. Updated teams as years went by (Ruth has Yankees scratched out, replaced with "Brooklyn Dodgers" in pencil, so was updated in 1938)
6. Renumbered everything by a system I don't understand yet. (Ruth is now 189 & Gehrig now 297.)

By looking for low-grade Goudey lots, I've reassembled about 30% of Bucky's 1933 set and these are my biggest hits so far. Not sure what'll ultimately come of it, but the whole project's an interesting way to look through the eyes of another era's collector.

Assume that Bucky was a Boston or New York collector, as a number of what I've found came from auctions near Cape Cod. Hope they're still mostly in the area, so I don't have to travel very far to keep looking. :-)

This is very cool. This is what I would call pure collecting, and one of many examples found on this forum. :) Good luck with the quest. If you add more down the road, or eventually get the inclination, this set might be worthy of its own thread.

Killer thread, all!

If you ever decide to work on his 1934 set, let me know. I have number 59/298 and could probably let it go for ANY other card in the 1934 set (as long as it isn't moldy and doesn't have bed bugs).

CW,

As always, love your taste in cardboard! That Joe D auto is so bold and sweetly positioned on that image. I think he is one player poised to see an increase in collectibles value down the line, between his lofty place in American pop culture history and his hallowed streak. All it takes is someone to even weakly challenge 56 and his name returns to the forefront.

Same with Williams and .400. That's one of my favorite cards, the Franks. Just a classic card.

1866 Lowells. This is one of the sharpest images I have seen.

Gary, that's a superb piece with amazing clarity!

Jeff:

Nice pick-up on the McPhee RC. I think that one was mine previously.

Phil,

Thanks. The image is strong and I got it for what I thought was a fair price.

Tough to pick one card, but the rarest card I acquired this year is a Tom Needham Plow Boy Tobacco card.

Other favorite pickups this year include: a Tom Needham T207, a John Tiedemann T209, a Jimmy Archer T222, and a Claude Berry 1910 Obak (150 Subjects.)

I'd like to again thank Ted Z for the T209 and Mike P. for trading the Archer Fatima T222!

Happy Holidays!

Patrick

Not Pre-War, but this '51 Bowman Mays was my favorite pick up of the year.

Other favorites would be Big Ed...
125492

Smiling George Weaver...
125496

... and my favorite new stash this year were the 9 signed Diamond Stars HOFers I picked up on the board... all as clean or cleaner than the Mr Dickey posted here.. as well as other signed pre-war

I could probably add 10-15 more "favorite"(s) of the year, but will cut myself off now.:D

Whatta year for ya, Ian! I like 'em all, but the Mays really stands out for me. Other than him being a Giant, it's a really nice card ;)

My best add this year was the Chase, but my favorites of 2013 are the Knight, and Manning ABs!
All in all a fun year, and looking forward to an even better 2014!

Figured I would revive this thread once more with a card I didn't even think to bid on until 3 minutes before the auction was over. I decided I liked it quite late in the auction, fortunately won it, and now it's one of my faves...(if cdv's are cards?)

A little of OT because I don't play favorites among the cards. I have had a couple of multiple purchases, however, I have enjoyed with both having a Pittsburgh connection. One is before WWII and one post WWII:
