Now that they have had a few months to get thier feet underneath them with their new autograph authenticating service I was wondering what everyone's opinion was about their authenticating. I did a search on Ebay and there were just under 300 items being offered that were SGC authenticated and some of those were when JSA had an affiliation with them. Since most of us like what they do on the card grading I would like to hear other peoples opinions.

It looks like their prices are pretty strong on ebay compared to PSA/DNA and JSA

So far so good, and I think the year of death on the flip is a nice touch

My guess is that they aren't stating this on every flip, but instead flips that may contain a year that was written by the player, and are including it to parlay any doubts about the validity of the autograph due to the year it was signed. It is a card from 1909, so it's understandable. I could be wrong, but that was my thought on it when I first saw this card...

For example, I doubt there are any Doc Powers signed T-206 cards but putting the DOD is a good idea. Listen, at least you would know you could not have a 1964T signed Jim Umbricht or Ken Hubbs card or a 1977T Danny Frisella or a 1975T Don Wilson card.

I think the date of death is very important to the value of an autograph (and not just for judging authenticity).

The first thing I do when considering an autograph purchase is search the internet for the date of death.

If the player lived into the mega-card-show era (say after 1980, but even more around 1990), I typically discount those autographs substantially. There were unprecedented numbers of autographs being signed in this era for resale.

If the player died long before any of this stuff (ie. 1930s, 1940s, 1950s) I want to know that...it will usually translate to a much scarcer autograph (of course except for the very most popular players who freely signed, like Ruth, Cobb, etc...these are valuable because of demand, not short supply.)

Cheers,
Blair

imo sgc is fine with modern stuff...prewar i'd still lean toward psa/dna or jsa for a variety of factors.

I actually like that they put the DOD. To be completely honest, when a player died, has become a LARGE part of what a signature is.. Especially in terms of value, as had been mentioned before, based on it's relation to the signing habbits of the different era's that a player was alive for..

I sent in some signed Callahans to SCG as I know and like Earl. A Lajoie, Speaker, and Young. I know they were good as I deal with folks like Jim Stinson and Ron Gordon. I basically wanted them slabbed for protection and because they were dupes I thought I might trade them at some point. They came back saying they weren't sure - they returned my $ in the form of a credit. They felt they were real but weren't experienced enough. This was a year ago and i was disappointed. Did fine on more recent stuff

I don't like it... I get a card encasulated today for a living player, then he dies months later.

Now all newly authenticated flips show the DOD but mine doesn't. Now I have to re-submit it to have it added?

I don't like it.

I like it. It's just a way they are trying to make themselves different and add value.

I agree...and think it adds some value to the flip...

Maybe they could just put "DOD" on there instead of "Deceased"...creepy word, and I've pronounced a couple people dead and gives me the full heebie-jeebies....
