Can the experts help me with this Larry Doby rookie card??

I need a little help with this Larry Doby rookie card. I know the card is trimmed, hand cut and what not. The issue isn't there. I have never seen one with this colored background. Is that normal for this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I've definitely seen 1949 Bowman cards with grey backgrounds. There's a few on eBay right now and the sellers are asking considerably more for each one ...

I'm not an expert on Bowmans (here's hoping Ted will chime in), but a similar type of printing anomaly also can be found in the 1948 Bowman basketball issue:

They seem to be scarce, in scrap form, but aren't unknown..At least I call them scrap. Others might call them something else. I should add, I don't know very much about the series, personally. I picked up the misprints/scraps because I like those kinds of things...

These Bowman printing errors are fun to find. And, unlike other "printer's scrap" cards, many of these cards were found in Bowman Gum wax packs.
As a very young kid in 1949, I recall opening up Bowman 5-cent packs and occassionally finding a color error card such as these.

Your Doby card was printed with a Yellow background color; and, is a tough Hi# (#233) card. The SLATE version that you have is quite rare.

So Ted...I am guessing that the card is a printer's scrap and the wacky cut came from the factory that way? Would it behoove me to clean it up a little or is the funky cut part of the appeal of the card?

A few more overprints....the backs of the two cards on the left are actually Double overprints, resulting in "3 printings"....1948 Bowman BasketBall,
FootBall, and Movie Stars' images.

This is not necessrily so. Uncut (36-card) Bowman sheets exist that were most likely taken out of the printing firm by employees back in 1949.
Subsequently, these sheets were hand-cut by collectors.

In my next post here, I will display such a 36-card sheet.

Of the 36 cards on this sheet, 17 are SLATE's (these cards normally have GREEN or ORANGE pastel colored backgrounds).

I find it very interesting that the 19 - BLUE or RED background cards were printed with their colors first. I'd love to find out more of Bowman's printing
process in producing the 252 cards in this set. I do know it was a 4-color process; but, I'm curious to know more details regarding this process..

1949 Bowman full-color uncut 4th series sheet. Very few SLATE cards have been found from this sheet. I show a Billy Johnson Slate card in Post #6.

They claim to have never seen them before, which I sort of find hard to believe, but oh well. I have both SGC and PSA graded 1949 Bowman SLATE cards. So, I don't understand why they at SGC claim that...."they have never seen them before".

In fact, I have a Bob Muncrief SLATE card graded SGC 80.

I'd show you them, but my scanner is not operating now. As soon as I get it operational, I'll scan these 1949 Bowman SLATE cards and post them here.

Here are two SGC graded SLATE cards (both normally have YELLOW pastel backgrounds).

Note that the flip on the Salkeld card identifies "Gray Variation". So, SGC has some explaining to do to you.
