Photos of Photogs

So one of my latest kicks has been trying to find photos or images of various well-known photographers, which has proven much harder than it may sound. I'll post some of those later, but coming at it from the opposite direction, I have this photo of Maris with a photographer that I'm trying to find out more info on. He is identified on the back as "R.M. Yeager," which is a start, but I'd at least like to know what his full name was and who he worked for. The photo is identified as having been taken at the 1961 World Series, and you can also see his press pass dangling from the button on his lapel, which I thought was pretty cool as well. Anyone have any ideas?

I bought this photo many years ago in Willow Grove or Ft Washington and I loved the photographer wearing the football helmet and shoulder pads. When I got the George Burke book, I realized by the face that it was George Burke.

Cool thread, Lance!

Here is a photo of my namesake, Scotty McGregor, in Detroit circa 1920's showing World Heavyweight Champ Jack Dempsey his camera equipment.
Scotty was a long-time sports photographer for The Detroit Free Press and Detroit News and my grandfather's childhood friend.

I love this photo and it's the only one I have of him...

Sweet photo of your namesake, Scott! Between that and the photo of Burke that Bob posted (still hoping he can find the original to confirm, but it certainly does look like him), this thread has already been more productive than I'd hoped, even if I still have no idea who R M Yeager is.

In the meantime, here are a couple of NEA and UPI photographer Mike Ackerman. The first is him with the Ferrell brothers and NEA sports writer Harry Grayson circa 1936. The second is one of him circa 1960 that I found on the web somewhere.

Just dug this one up tonight. Terrible quality photos of the aging photographer (due to coming from Google Archives scans), but neat to finally put a name to the familiar "D. ELLIOTT-PIX" stamp I've seen on so many photos. I about threw up when I read what happened to his life's work of negatives. Guess that's one archive that nobody will get to enjoy now :(

Here's one that was sent to me (thanks Bruce!) that shows the Boston Red Sox pausing for a little photo op during warm-ups for Game 2 of the 1912 World Series. The photo was taken by Louis Van Oeyen, and interestingly, references a "moving picture" being taken as well (I assume by the camera on the left?)

No named photogs in this one, but still thought it was interesting.

it's not vintage, and although he's not famous (yet?), here is long-time friend and collector Mark Cunningham who turned his two hobbies, baseball and photography into a career. His pics are on hundreds of cards, a Beckett cover and SI as well as many other publications and the Jeter pic on the front of the 2K5 Baseball video game.

I thought I would add a non-baseball photographer into the mix. This photo shows Pvt Kenneth C. Whitmore of the U.S. Army at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, Finland. This photo is about the size of a passport photo and shows him on the infield of the athletic stadium with a Japanese newsreel photographer in front of him. I have also attached scans of two of his official Olympic credentials listing him as a photographer for the U.S. Army. I also have his travel orders and equipment list. I collect mostly Olympic photographs (5000+ images). I also try to pick up items related to the photographers including credentials, passes, tickets and the such. I have also acquired an interesting group of photo vests and bibs.

Reviving this thread with shot of photographer Byron "Shorty" Filkins astride Indians outfielder Chris Hockett to get a downward a shot of 6'-8" Cleveland pitcher Mike Naymick. At 5' 1-1/2" tall, my guess is Filkins was responsible for a lot of those upward-angle, larger-than-life kind of shots ;)

Great thread. When I first saw this photo my gut instinct was to duck. Can you imagine a foul deflection from the lefty batter which him and his equipment that close to the box.

Thank you Scott. The glasses are also pretty close in style. It must be that 'AAArmy Training, Sir!!' I have never seen GB, but he was a good straight man in 'Stripes'.

Wow, that IS cool! Usually you see those "1st pitch" shots from the vantage point of the photogs on the ground. I think that's the first overhead shot like that I've seen. Very neat, and shows just how crowded it could get with all those guys jostling for position at a key moment!

It also explains why the guy throwing out the ball always seems to be lobbing it way up high: They HAD to or else they'd bean Conlon or one of his cronies right in the mush! :eek:

Thanks Lance. What I love about this photo was that the subject of interest, and thus the most in focus, was Ike in the stands. The resulting soft focus of Mickey results in an ethereal image, which if you stare at it long enough begins to complete that magnificent swing.

What, no name? I need something for the commemorative plaque. 1930 is by far my favorite year for the New York Telegram, but even more impressive than its thorough reporting is the distinct lack of any typos or grammatical errors. None! For the entire year! Now that I've seen the face of the man responsible for such a feat, he must be honored! :eek:

Seriously though, one of the few things that I enjoy more than a strictly on-topic thread is an obscure tangential reference. You are excused for your interruption. ;)

But lest we stray too far from the topic at hand, here is a shot of photographer Herman Seid shaking hands with Luke Sewell. Seid was trained at The Cleveland Press by Louis Van Oeyen and remained there as Van Oeyen's successor, covering sports for The Press through about the mid-1950's. He also started the photography department at the Memphis Commercial Appeal, which hits a little closer to home for this reporter.

Here is the proofreader for the New York Telegram newspaper. Stamped Apr 17 1930.

It's Charles Conlon. His occupation was proofreading copy for the Telegram. He also took a few thousand baseball photos in his spare time.

Having the photo in hand, you can see this written on the small piece of paper tacked up in front of him:

Englewood NJ

It is his home address as it reads on one of his stamps!

One of my favorite photos...and the only image of him like this that I have seen.

That tremendous whacking sound you just heard was me smacking myself in the head. :eek: I didn't recognize him without that shock of white hair :D I really feel like going back and editing out my ridiculous comments now, but I'll let them remain as a lesson in humility for myself.

:) You're funny Lance. Looks like the white shock had been absorbed into a full head of white hair by 1930.

What is also funny is that the back of the photo references him as a proofreader and not as a photographer.

Here is another photo of Charles Conlon taken in 1944. The back reads, "Charlie Conlon, old time baseball photographer." I am happy that he was referenced as a photographer on this one. This was taken during his retirement years, after he put down his cameras.

Does anyone else have any photos of Conlon that they'd like to share? I'd love to see them.

Toni Frissell, the first female staff photographer for Sports Illustrated and the only person to photograph covers for both SI and Vogue.

Very cool thread. Don't know how I missed it but just caught Lance's link in the other, also very cool, photographer thread. Will have to dig out my book of photos for info on this picture; don't know if the photog is even indicated. Umpire is Jim Boyer, game is in 1950.
