View Full Version : Babe Ruth's First Card In Pinstripes?

Have been debating this issue with a buddy... I was just wondered what is considered Babe Ruth's first card ever, in which he is pictured in Yankee pinstripes? Or would those earlier cards when the text labels him a Yankee be considered his first Yankee cards? Has the hobby at large anointed one card his "first Yankee card?" Or is it a choice among a few.

It seems on the one hand some say his first Yankee card is one in which he is labeled a Yankee by the text, but the picture is him in a Boston uniform. Others feel his first Yankee card is not a Yankee card unless it depicts him in the classic pinstripes. Just very curious as to how seasoned collectors come down on this interesting issue-- in addition to which would be considered his first pinstripe card.

I believe the m101-6 is recognized as the babe's first card depicted as a yankee...although he is shown in a red sox uni. 1st card of him in a yankee uni...that I'm not sure?! Maybe a strip...or the e220?

Not too many early issues out there. The Pathe Freres premium has him in pinstripes with the black armband worn in 1920 when Ray Chapman was killed. Not a true card but pretty early item.

The m101-6 is his first Yankee card, I am almost certain. As for pinstripes it could be w519, but I'm not sure.

E120 is card I have always identified as first Yankee Ruth I guess because of large distribution...And as a Yankee fan always liked the E126 because it is a 1927 Ruth

e220 predates e120.:D

The E-121 also identifies him as R.F.- Yankees, but it still shows him pitching for Boston.

e220 predates e120.:D

We had a thread a while back where we were able to show that the E220 set was a 1922 set at the earliest not a 1921-23 set. There were some that didn't want to hear it but there is no doubt to me that it is a 1922 set, that would make it date to the same year as e120.

E220 is listed as 1921-1923 so could be earlier could be later I am no expert on National Caramel distribution..As I said in my post just the less than humble opinion of a Yankee fan and because of the large ditribution I always considerd the E120 the first Yankee ruth

I still like the E220 even if it is 1922. Seems like everything else from the time period shows him in a pitching pose.

Most likely the 1920 Heading Home/Tex Richard theater cards. I think Leon would firmly agree with that. M101-6 Ruth & some strips were also issued in 1920, but the Felix Mendelsohn portrays him in a Red Sox uniform!

I love the e220...this will have to suffice for now!

Headin' Home cards are probably 1920 so they are early.

What about his 1921 Exhibit, looks like a 1920-21 Road Jersey-

I read that it was the first issue that he appeared in pinstripes in an REA listing. Doesn't mean that it's true.

the w516 (says Yankee) and the w522 (has no team named) are both from 1920 - his 1st season as a yankee. I would say these are his 1st yankee cards as it was his 1st season there. if I would pick one it would be the w516 as it states yankee.

Also hes pitching on both cards:D
