View Full Version : Is there a grading thread?

I've yet to send a card in for grading and I'm trying to decide if either of these two would grade above 8.5, assuming the backs look as good as front (to lazy to scan backs right now).

Anyone else want to post their cards here for a grading estimate, feel free.

Thanks!

I would say no on both due to centering. Even an 8 would be iffy.

It's tough to say based on scans, since those don't show surface flaws too well, but the Spahn looks like an 8 tops with the ding to the lower right corner. The Palmer is very sharp, although the centering would probably prevent a grade higher than straight 8. Nice examples overall.

Spahn looks trimmed on top. I think you have a shot with Palmer though.

Thanks for the responses.

I'd be surprised if the Spahn were trimmed as I've had it for a very long time, but you never know.

Both are nice cards! The Spahn : Looks like there is a wrinkle / light crease on the right side just half way down. If that is the case plan on a 4 at best maybe a 3. There is some discoloring at the lower corners and bottom edge of the card. There also appears to be a ding on the corner. The Palmer : Corners look good, my only question is the lower left appears to have slight rounding and not coming to a point like the other 3 corners. Perhaps I'm seeing something that's not there though. If the corner is pointed like the others, you should have a strong shot at an 8. I believe centering is ok on both cards. The Spahn is not close to an 8 in my opinion. I would measure the Spahn to see if it is the correct size for the issue. Again, really nice cards.

Anyone mind giving me a grade estimate in this? A 4 or maybe a 5? You won't hurt my feelings. Lol

It might pull a 5, but a4.5 is more likely.

I don't see any creases and the corners are decent, so I think it could pull a 5.5.

I think the J. Robinson has a 6 potential. I like the Palmer for an 8. I would see a 4 on the Spahn.

A 4 on the Spahn.....:(

I've had this card for a very long time and always felt it was very sharp. Not questioning your grading, but can you say what makes it look so low?

I'm posting another scan, this time out of the card holder. I think maybe the card holder was giving it a look of creasing or scratching on the card :D

Look at the cut pattern on the top border of the Spahn. It "bat wings" at both corners. In other words, the card is higher at each corner than it is in the middle. That tells me its probably been trimmed. If anybody else has a different opinion, please feel free to share.

I see what you're saying. Here's a close up scan of the top back and front.

I'm really not trying to take anyone to task over this, I just don't know what to look for.

I agree with this assessment. This is one of the tell-tale signs of trimming, unfortunately. As for the Robinson - I grade it a 5. I grade the 67 Palmer a 7, but if I had it in my hands I would take a closer look at that top edge and make sure the card measures up. Top edge looks slightly suspicious.

I quickly looked at the top right corner. I would have got this grade wrong this is very subjective, that is provided the card is not trimmed which would make the numerical grades a mute point. I would still say 6 tops on the Spahn and that is my final answer.

Lol, I'll take the 6.
