QUEEREST BASEBALL CONTEST IN HISTORY
There have been many queer developments and freakish plays in the history of baseball, but the one that takes the cake was staged in Muncie, Ind., 28 years ago tomorrow. A big crowd of fans witnessed the peculiar game, which was a regular pennant contest between Muncie and Anderson, both clubs of the Indiana State League. The remarkable chapter of the contest was confined to one inning, when the Anderson players made six hits - three triples, a double and two singles – without scoring a run. This seems impossible, but it is true, and this is now it was done:
Ireland, the first man up, landed on the leather for a triple, and tried to get home on a passed ball, but was caught at the plate. One man out. No runs. Wiswell up. He landed for another three bagger. When he reached third sack, he kept right on running, trying to stretch it to a homer, but the ball was relayed in time to get him at the plate as well. Which makes two out and no runs. Shumway also whacked the ball for three bases, the pill going to the fence. He played safe and roosted on third. The next man up was Derby. He bunted one down the third base line, but the third baseman thought it was foul and didn't rush to get it. When it finally percolated through his cranium that the ball was fair Derby was on second. Shumway was still hanging on to third. Faats was the next batter, and he got a single on a ball bunted down the third base line. The bases were now crowded, and three triples, a double and a single had been made off Gear's delivery with two out and no runs. Fear came to bat and hit the ball on the nose for a liner between first and second which hit Faats, who was running from first to second, on the leg. This made three out, but Fear was credited with a single. Thus the Anderson club made three triples, two singles and one double, but didn't get one bloomin' run.
