Trying to educate myself on checks signed by Joe McCarthy.

I see that Mr. Stinson has one on eBay right now and says that less than five are known to exist.

But I've seen two previous McCarthy checks on eBay over the past six months or so, and neither went for more than $100.

Are these checks that tough? I feel like I've seen enough around to say they aren't overly difficult. But I might be missing something, too.

Wow. And now I see the bid went from $86 to $1,500 on the eBay listing.

I'm seriously confused. Help me out.

I think you may be mistaken about seeing two others. As far as I know, Joe McCarthy (the baseball manager) is very rare in check form which is resulting in the bids you see on ebay right now.

Thanks for the response. Much appreciated.

I'm certain it was the same McCarthy and the same type of check and autograph, but I'm starting to wonder if they were reprints or something. Obviously, they couldn't have been the real deal based on what I'm seeing now.

Sometimes sellers put "RP" in the item title or description and expect people to know that means "reprint." Easy to miss obviously.

Perhaps what you saw was a matted display with a reprint check?

Nope. It wasn't in any sort of frame. Just a single check like the one posted.

Is there a way to check past listings on eBay? I'd love to know what I was seeing.

It's obvious I'm an idiot when it comes to these McCarthy checks, though, as I didn't even know they were that difficult and wasn't even willing to go over $100 for one.

Thanks for the response. I take pride in having knowledge of checks like this, but McCarthy went way over my head.

I'm stumped too.

Worthpoint shows six ending on ebay in the last few years for between $40 and $100.

Really?

Haha. Now I'm more confused than ever.

The PSA price guide lists McCarthy checks at $500. I'm wondering if those that sold on ebay were fake which might account for lack of bidding?

There also is the chance that more checks were released on the market.

Richard a McCarthy check about one month ago on eBay. I could not pass it up, so I bought it.

I bought one slabbed (not that that matters) for $70 in June.

Good to know guys, thanks for the info.
Ken, if you don't mind my asking, how much did you pay for it?

Slightly off-topic, but if anyone has a lineup card from McCarthy it is right near the top of my wish list.
