I was very excited about winning this cabinet photo - you can see by the 'before' photo that it's pretty cool. 11x14, lots of cool pillbox hats.

Unfortunately, the cabinet was placed in a huge bubble-mailer with 1 piece of a priority mail box laying on top of it, then shipped Parcel Post.

It didn't have a chance...

I would be more than a bit upset. What did the seller have to say about it?

Lazy, careless sellers aside; great photo!

It had a semi-happy ending. I asked for a partial refund; otherwise, I would send it back. He gave me the refund and apologized with a note: "Sorry for the problem. I thought I put do not bend. May not matter."

As a seller, I'm vaguely irritated when a customer tells me how to pack and ship their item, but now I think I get it. The seller is a perfectly nice guy - he just doesn't know how to pack and ship fragile items.

I don't think it's ruined - the print only is torn on the bottom left corner. If it's an albumen I can soak it off the mount and put it on another one. I just need to find a cheap period mount on ebay.

If I figure it out I'll post a pic of the final result.

when I asked a lady at the post office why she bent a picture I received when it said on it "do not bend", the reply was I didn't bend it there

Some Jim Jeffries material:

Ticket and raincheck from the Jeffries Barn boxing arena here in Burbank:

An invitation and two tickets [front and back shown] to a 1941 dinner of the California Boxing Commission honoring Jeffries:

Business card of the manager of Jeffries Barn, G.W. Aiton. Interestingly, Aiton was a former MLB player. He played in 10 games for the 1912 St. Louis Browns:

Two newly discovered Jeffries mail reply cards. I'd previously cataloged a card used to respond to mail about his 75th birthday:

Jeffries Barn letterhead signed by Aiton:

I am always amazed by how many sellers seem to think that bubble mailers form an impenetrable, indestructible barrier around the item once they are sealed, and that writing "Do Not Bend" on the outside is akin to casting a ward of protection around it. "Now NOTHING can happen to this fragile (fill in name of rare and irreplaceable collectible)!"

When I remember to, I send the follow-up messages with packing instructions, leading off with "This probably goes without saying, but just in case, here's how this should be packed:" And on a number of occasions, I've actually gotten a response to the effect of, "Oh, well I usually just pack everything in bubble mailers," or "If you want it packed that way, I'll have to charge you extra for shipping," at which point I pony up the additional shipping cost and pray that the idiot doesn't still manage to screw it up.

And when I don't remember to send packing instructions, that's usually when I get a sharp reminder why I started doing that in the first place...

Anyway, nice photo, and good luck with the repair work, Scott.

Scott--Wonderboy apparently sold recently--see the link below. If they had the custom-made case and a Redford-signed LOA, that would have to make it the greatest baseball movie prop of all time, right?

Good afternoon Gents,

I just received this in the mail today (purchased from the bay). It is supposed to be an 8x10 George Burke photo (owner told me the Burke stamp is on verso) from the early 30s, signed in black fountain pen. Its been matted and framed in UV glass. The previous owner had made a minor fix as their were a few small holes in the neck region and in the black background, so he utilized some older sepia photos (attached to the back) to make the holes practically un-noticeable. I kinda want to take the photo out to see the Burke stamping on the verso and the fix that the owner made mention of, but likewise don't want to damage the fine framing. Any suggestions? I have seen Burke/Red Sox signed photos of Grove, but this is the first Burke/Athletics one I have seen...whether its Burke or not, I love the photo and signature.

I would leave it alone, but if you decide to open it up you can easily replace the backing paper later. If it has those springy pieces of metal holding the picture in, be real careful. If nails or those tiny tack-wedges, use something sturdy and flat (I use a screwdriver) to pry the nail away from the picture backing, then grab it with a pair of pliers, twist carefully in place, then pull straight out. Take your time - it's easy enough to drive a tool right through the backing. Good luck.

I like to pick up some kind of baseball related vending machine every now and again.

The Vendex Co. - 1 cent Bubble Gum Machine - 1930s.

It's about 12" in height. I like the sticker on the machine.

As one can deduce - if one was lucky enough to have a "baseball" come out? They won a candy bar!!

This is my 3rd machine - the others are more like the pedestal mounted type.

edit: I found an ad for the machine from back around 1934 - the company sold these machines for 5.95 and 6 for 30 bucks.

I think people here tend to get complacent at times.... fickle group. Either that, or everyone has a Friday night date (which somehow I doubt) ;)

That's an awesome Tin, and one I haven't seen before. I've seen other Mayo Cut Plug Tins, but not like that.... very impressive, especially with the striking blue color.

Mark, I forgot it was Friday - for me all 'Friday' means is that my friends get excited :)

Thanks, I was hoping it might have been one that held a card, but when I quit searching on 'tin' and went with 'pack', I found that Mayo had card-sized soft packs. Just another area I'm ignorant in.

Both appear to be original photos. If they are nice and clear, they were probably printed from the original negative, and the date stamps indicate their age.

your mayo tin is one of at least 7 variations/configurations in tin. Think this is the only variation with paper label. I remember seeing one or two of this style along my journey. Paper label tins are not actively sought by most tin collectors - but they make great go-withs for the sports enthusiast. The one you are showing may be the earliest - would take more thoght and research. It probably predates the football inserts but I'd have to go back to my records. I've not been active lately in researching tin/pack card manufacturers and the associated product - too many other tasks to focus on avoiding...... I know Jon Canfield has done a lot of work on that front. I don't think it's been clarified yet what kind of package the football cards or even the small die-cuts were found in (or even the ns cards) although I remember that one of the tins has been suggested. I KNOW the yum yum baseball cards were found in tins (thanks Jay M.) as well as the later lucky strike NS cards but I can think of few others. Mostly all cards pre and post 1900 were found in slide and shell packs - a few cards were inserted in paper style packages like the Polar Bear but.....? The more I know - the less I know :-( Is the tin factory 1 or 42 as it's hard to see in the scans? The value of your tin would be in the eyes of the owner :-)

I made a great game used score today at a local estate auction...one of the "kids" in the family was a batboy for the Lincoln Chiefs from 1955-57 and I scored 9 game used bats, two game used baseballs, and two team photos. I talked to the guy about the Chuck Klein bat and he said one of the players was using it, but he doesn't remember who.

No kidding! Just when you think all the baseball-related stuff in Nebraska has finally been warehoused in Dan's basement, he finds another cache to add to his hoard :D Congrats on a nice pick-up! Out of curiosity, could you show the president's side-stamping on the balls? Are they both Johnson?

Kenny, I've had pretty good luck with just placing magic lantern slides on thick white paper or cardstock and just photographing them with a regular camera. May not always work, but for a "no special equipment" method, it usually gives pretty good results.

Yep. It's a ticket from Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day, July 4, 1939.

And I've also got this genuine Kriendler:

David, any idea how rare those Gehrig tickets are? It's on my list, but somewhere down the road. Just hoping they're not so rare that they can't be found.

They are pretty rare, Mike. I've only ever seen three for sale, including mine.

I just received this original 1954 8X10 photo of Willie Mays in Puerto Rico. He and Clemente played together in the Cangrejeros de Santurce outfield that year. This is one of three original photos depicting Mays in his sole season in Puerto Rico that I have ever come across. I passed on one in a previous REA auction and one in a Yee auction. I later kicked myself. When I saw this one I had to have it. I likely over paid but I am very pleased to have it nonetheless. I think it is an attractive image that seems to tell a story. This picture is my first pick up since undergoing surgery three weeks ago. It’s funny how purchasing it makes my world feel as if it is starting to return to normal. This hobby may be hell on my wallet but is certainly good for my soul.

Great photo...image does appear to be 1880s, but that style of cabinet wasn't really used at that point...I'm guessing a later print from the original negative...say 1910ish.

Not to be contrarian, but I think the image goes with the mount - just out west somewhere. Check out the catcher's mitt - probably early 1900's.

I was afraid of that. Well, I guess everyone has to have one or two items on their want list that they'll never find. :(
Thanks David.

You're right, I didn't even look at the equipment...three men with gloves that are definitely circa 1900. I guess they didn't get the memo out there in the Hills that the 1880s mustache style was over. :D

To all for your help. My thought was that the gloves suggested something other than the purported age. However, I think that it is a great image, and adding 10 years or so does nothing to take away from it. The owner suggested to me that a Cheyenne Wyoming photgrapher had dated it for him, authenticated it and actually tried to purchase it several years ago... Tim

Definitely a keeper...a nice crisp image and a lot to look at. :)

Dell,
WOW. That is amazing. It's incredible that something that old could still have vibrant colors like that.
Congrats.

Dell, that's really a beautiful poster...congrats!

Not sure what compelled me to buy this but will make cool display pieces. I have no idea whether these are modern or not but do appear to have some age to them.

Anybody want to read up on the Syracuse Chiefs from 1961 to 1974? Picked up this run of scrapbooks reportedly assembled by (or for) the team's owner during that period, though it could have just as easily been anyone in the front office by the look of them. Mostly newspaper clippings, but several hundred autographs scattered throughout as well, with most having gone on to play in the majors. No Thurman Munson though (first thing I checked :D ).

Mike (71buc) led me to this ebay '62 wire photo of Bob Feller with his Dad's catchers mitt (now in my collection). I was able to match the two, which was a big relief given that the mitt was once in Halper's possession:

WOW.... awesome companion piece, Scott. That Feller photo certainly found the right home (nice assist by Mike!)

As a side note.... the vast majority of Halper's stuff was good. A very few of the more visible/noteworthy pieces were mis-represented, and those items have received all of the publicity/infamy.

But those tainted uniforms/autographs actually represent a miniscule percentage of the overall Halper collection.

Circa 1865 CdV of 2 baseball games in progress. The reverse states that the image was from Topeka KS and that 2 games are being played. You need a magnifying glass to see the players clearly, but its all there. I've never seen a game action CdV from this period not originating from the northeast. Interesting and unusual. The railroad tracks in the foreground are a nice touch.
Sorry for the small scan. I'll try to make a larger one.

Thanks Mark. Still, I was very nervous about comparing the glove in this pic with my glove - it was obvious that it has been cleaned up since the '62 photo, and some stitching has broken, but the pocket was unmistakeable, much to my relief. The glove came with a letter from Halper, describing his acquiring it from Feller, and also with a signed note from Feller. The provenance was good, but this pic was huge - I really owe Mike a huge favor, and hopefully I can repay it at some point.

Yup, and it's going to be at least one long afternoon of photographing all that paper before I release those back into the wild. I'll let you know when I finally get around to it if you want a peek.
