View Full Version : I decided to buy the John Dunlop 1894 Mayo football card and not the 52 Mantle PSA 4

Well guys I decided to buy the 1894 John Dunlop football card instead of the 52 Topps Mantle card...after doing a lot of reading for the last couple of hours and finding out that the Dunlop only has 10 known copies that exist in the whole world I just had to have it. The Mantle can be found any day of the week....not the case with the Dunlop Holy Grail of Football cards.

I'm not familiar with the Dunlop card, but you make a good point about the easily accessible '52 Mantle.

To each his own!

If I really want another Mantle I will find one no problem I just find it very very cool to own a Holy Grail card in any sport.

So I guess without knowing I am sticking with vintage cards one way or another.

I will buy a 52 Mantle later this year just did not want to miss on the Dunlop when one is actually up for sale. See the videos on page 1 of this topic that is what pushed me over the edge to buy it. And I made sure that the seller was OK first to cancel the Mantle and sell me the Dunlop did not want to make problems for him. But the guy is very cool and very easy going so all worked out.

No all is OK we spoke on the phone (about 30 minutes ago) and he actually wanted to send the Mantle back in to see if it can be a PSA 5 (he regretted selling it as a PSA 4) so we are on good terms. He gets the same price as well 9I paid 12500$ for the Dunlop and had paid 12950$ for the Mantle)...he is a very cool guy and easy going so no bad vibes at all. I told him if it causes a conflict I would stay with the Mantle card but he was more than OK.

My understanding is that Tony owns both cards. Zone gets some bona fides and a rare and obscure card and Tony can sell the Mantle to a much broader market. Everyone knows what a 1952 Topps Mantle card is and rich people who don't collect baseball cards buy them all the time.

The Dunlop card will be much more appreciated by me than the Mantle. Plus who knows when the next one will come up for sale....most likely years and years can't say the same for the Mantle. I love the 52 Mantle don't get me wrong I will buy one...one day just not right now. I would not mind owning a nice PSA 2 or PSA 3 52 Mantle for a little less money.

Adrian,

I've got to admit, I'm worried for you... and I don't think I'm the only one here who feels that way. Yours is a very vulnerable situation, you've suffered from some terrible tragedies and maladies... and you don't know what you are doing with the cards, which are very high-priced items.

You gotta understand, what you are doing, there are very real consequences down the line. Maybe you can talk to some of these dealers and return the cards, get your money back, hopefully they'll understand... and then just stop. Maybe this is not a good time to be doing this... and maybe you oughta really talk with your brother a bit, as well.

It's late and I really can't be posting on your threads anymore, but I hope you'll really read this and think long and hard about consequences for this... money is not always easy to come by... people are worried.... hope you understand.

Cheers,

To all members here who are concerned:

No I have pretty much reached my limit on funds for a few months for sure....guys I am OK with my finances I pay ALL my bills and eat very well every month (I live alone and only have a pet so no one is bee neglected for sure).

This is money from a coin I sold. And 95% of the money I sold the coin for was used to pay most off most of my condo (I have been in it since 2010 just wanted to pay the most I could on it...it is a very nice place and I would not lose my condo for card purchases or any other ridiculous reason I have control over) off so I know how to handle my money. Priority is not cards it's a hobby.

I make a very good salary every month and my job is not going anywhere...very secure...I was simply confused on the Mantle. I appreciate the concern BUT you guys will not see any other purchases from me on here for a long while it will be a T206 Bill O'Hara error in PSA 2.

Buy Bob Lemke's 2006 SCD guide and read thru it. Read some of the archives on here. It can be a crazy hobby, but it can also be fun and what you make it. Adrian, Jamie's advice sounds both compassionate and sincere. I'm certain you make much more money than I do and can afford such nice and rare Items. However, impulsively purchasing such high dollar cards is concerning no matter what tax bracket you live in. Please be careful I fear this is going nowhere good.

Zone,

I hope you are honest with yourself and agree to what you've asked yourself. Yesterday, you adamantly had NO buyers remorse and today you spent over 10k on a card you had never heard of 24 hrs before. I understand that you are financially able to swing it, but I hope you slow down "in general" to avoid problems in other aspects of your life. Your penchant for the dramatic and OCD could burn a lot of relationships in the hobby, in your profession, and in life. In general, people like to know what to expect, and you are most definitely a wild card. That can be good in some instances, but I hope for your sake, that you are able to better control your illness with the help of your physicians, medications, and those close to you so that it does not impact your day to day living. As a collective, I think we are seeing a pattern in your posts that concerns us. These are all great cards, but in the end it's just cardboard. I hope that our banter with you on this board is not stoking the fire so to speak. Please take your own advice and openly discuss your decision process on these items with your brother and physicians.

Good luck to you in the future, in and outside of this hobby.

I am collecting cards that are rare and the Dunlop fits that description to the tea!!! The Mantle was a dream card but not what I collect in terms of rare cards....rarity comes first for me then a dream card.

I mean people do it all the time with other things in their lives like hey what a beautiful women I must have her in my life then 2 days later ah no she is not for me....and other times it last a life time with a women.

I think divorce cost way more than a few bad choices when changing ones mind on another card one wants versus another card.

Adrian,

A card like that, it's not necessarily on price. My Mantle signed rookie and Gehrig signed DeLong were the most I've ever spent on a card, and I never thought I would have spent that much on a card ever.

The point is, I'm happy, regardless of price. And we can all see that you are happy as well, and price isn't too big of a concern. Don't really ever worry about over paying if it's something you're truly going to enjoy, like what I did. I don't ever plan on getting rid of my cards, and if I got offered $30k for the pair, I'd say no because I enjoy them too much.

Best of Luck,

I love it when baseball card collectors talk football ;-) However, a couple of things that Zone91 were told are not true.

1) True football experts now put the estimate for the number of Dunlop cards to be between 20 - 30. It's still pretty rare but isn't even close to the rarest football card that exists. There are 14-15 graded Dunlop's between PSA and SGC. The others aren't graded. Due to the press around some recent findings of this card, others have popped up in the past year.

2) At least 4-5 Dunlop's have been sold on the public market during the past year so this card does come up for auction more frequently than you have been told. There have been years, however, where it did not appear in an auction so it's definitely not a given that you can find one if you want one. I've been offered three of them in the past year so they are definitely out there, though.

The question as to whether the Dunlop card is the Holy Grail of football cards hugely depends upon your perspective. Some serious collectors prefer a high grade National Chicle Nagurski to the Dunlop simply because Nagurski was a pro star whereas Dunlop was barely a starter on his college team and unknown to the general population. His claim to fame is due to a printing error that left his name off the card. This is probably why the population of this card is lower than the other cards in the N302 Mayo set.

Others consider star cards with lower population to be the big dogs of the hobby. As examples, I believe there are only two Star Player Candy Red Grange cards and two Rogers Peet Ken Strong cards known to exist.

I personally love the Dunlop card and wouldn't trade it for any of the others.

If you post 50-100 times a day, about every single little thing that comes to your mind, then it turns others off. Just take it easy. We all want you to be in the hobby and I don't think anyone actually dislikes you.....they just dislike the forum being taken over the way it has been. Adrian bought a Mantle 4, and sold it. I regret not buying it, he offered it at a substantial discount to then-market and it was a nice one, but I just was not comfortable sending him money and trusting him given that as a buyer he had reneged on quite a few purchases. He was erratic, but he never really "scammed"anyone (or at least that I recall) and most of the time he was the one that came out on the bottom because of his flip flopping on a constant basis. Every card he bought he was going to "keep forever" and then "pass down to his nephew", but then a few days later he would sell it at a loss and buy something new with the idea of keeping that forever.

Yeah, he did renege on a number of ebay purchases though, and with him in Canada -- and refusing to use a third party as an intermediary -- I just was not comfortable.

Understandable, I never did a deal with him either.

Yeah, remember that MURR'Y card? He sold it to Kevin Quinn for less than 1/3 of what he paid for it.

Man, really bringing up the past now. Isn't Kevin Quinn the guy that got banned because he said he could hack this website. Then Leon put "idiot" next to his name telling him to hack that and fix it?

That was him. I guess by hacking maybe he was thinking he can sneak back on and get past our low level security measures. I have good information he came back as an alias and was subsequently banned again. My guess is it will happen again.

They had their moments, yes, but Chao was in a class by himself IMO. Any man who debuted with a post asking if Joe Jackson didn't wear shoes how did he avoid getting spiked. and went from there to reacting to the Virginia Tech shooting by wondering what would happen if Barry Bonds had a gun, has no peer.

It is an unimaginable tragedy, thirty-one young adults have died. It's a senseless shame. This is the reason that we play sports. It allows us to take out our agressions on the playing field. Can you imagine Barry Bonds with a gun, or Wilt Chamberlain with a gun. Thank God for sports.

Maybe I'm exaggerating the importance of sports. But how about Jesse Owens at Hitler's Olympic games. Wasn't he in fact showing the master race, that blacks could compete. If I'm totally off-base let me know. Without doubt the killings were a tragedy, but think of what this world would be like without the Olympics every four years.

Okay, the part about pondering what specific people might do if they had a gun and no sports outlet is dumb, but I think his greater point is valid.

Sports are an outlet for normal competitiveness. And the Olympics do draw people from different countries together. Americans cheering for Olga Korbut going through her gymnastic routines, for instance, has a real subliminal effect in making people realize that while governments sometimes have idiot leaders, people from different nations are generally very much like us.

I've always felt that in Europe in 1944, let's say, the average American and average German soldiers didn't hate each other at all... they probably both hated Hitler for being put in the ridiculous position of having to try to kill each other to survive.

Sports wouldn't be so universally popular if they didn't serve some real purpose. Part of that purpose is directing things like aggression, physical release of adrenaline, community or national pride and identification, the desire to be victorious (even if our actual role is to sit on a couch with a bag of Doritos cheering for our team,) into contests that are governed by rules, and don't involve bloodshed (boxing aside.)

Here in Minnesota, the Sioux Indians (in the south) used to send raiding parties against the Chippewa Indians (in the north) with regularity. Now, we send the Vikings over to Wisconsin and let them bring us glory by beating the Packers.

Peter_Spaeth

Yeah if I didn't have sports teams to release my aggression vicariously I would be out there committing violent acts.

This is just a hunch but maybe the Sioux and Chippewa ceased fighting each other because we killed both of them and took their land, then relegated them each to reserves that we didn't want.

Not sure why you use the word "we." I didn't kill anyone, did you?

Actually, European settlers didn't have battles with the Chippewa - they got along quite well in fact. The Chippewa saw white people as a valuable ally against the Sioux. Europeans were very frequently helped by the Chippewa, and they reciprocated by showing them how to parch their rice so it wouldn't go bad during the long winter (starvation had been an annual challenge.) And, they did quite a bit of trading, so it was a mutually beneficial relationship on the whole.

Even today when driving through the Nett Lake reservation, it's amazing, but every native American you pass on the road pauses what they're doing to wave greeting.

So yeah, I know it's politically correct to think Indians were saints and White people were purely evil, and you can continue to think that way if you choose.

Minnesota reservations involve some very good land by the way, and the exclusive deal Indian tribes have to run casinos brings them quite a bit of revenue.

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2012/08/13/every-member-of-a-minnesota-indian-tribe-makes-at-least-1-million-a-year/

Thanks to the massive profits generated by their luxury casino and resort operation, the 480 members of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Tribe in Minnesota live a comfortable life of luxury and ease.

“The payouts are the windfall from lucrative casinos and resorts that the tribe runs on its reservation in Scott County — about 45 minutes southwest of Minneapolis-St Paul,” the Daily Mail reports.
Members of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Tribe make $84K a Month

Each member of the tribe receives about $84,000 per month ($1.08 million per year), according to recent court documents. Based on these figures, that would make this the wealthiest tribe in U.S. history.

“We have 99.2 percent unemployment,” Stanley R. Crooks told the New York Times in a rare interview. “It’s entirely voluntary.”

And although tribe members keep relatively modest homes, it is reported that most of them own luxury cars, take up expensive hobbies (such as big game hunting or horse breeding), and send their children to private schools.

“Tribal members usually have multiple homes and have been known to take vacation for months at a time,” the Daily reports.

I was just trying to make the point that sports have value in providing peaceful competition, which I think is pretty obvious, but some people here are more interested in ridicule, so never mind.

Peter_Spaeth
06-20-2016, 01:10 PM
Of course sports have value. It's your suggestion that they somehow channel aggression that would otherwise be expressed as violence that is IMO dubious. And what any of this had to do with the Virginia Tech massacre is beyond me, yet you were somehow defending Chao's "larger point."

This reminds me of a joke; Two farmers buy hay for $2 a bushel and take it to market to sell for $1 a bushel. They cannot figure out why they are losing money. After hours of debate, finally one of them speaks up, "I got it. What we need is a bigger truck" :)

Not sure why you use the word "we."

Reminds me of the old joke about the Lone Ranger and Tonto surrounded by hostile Indians. The Lone Ranger says "I guess we're really in trouble now" and Tonto says "What's this 'we' $h** white man?"

The Brucii had moments of utter insanity mixed with an extreme internet troll persona. He threatened to sue "Archive" for plagiarizing one of his posts and once wished me dead because I did a parody of William Shatner's SNL outburst about Trekkies who need to get a life, with him as the basement-dwelling virgin (see my tag line below). Mike O'Keefe even did an article in the NY Daily News about the craziness he pulled here.
