I bought a '84 Topps box at a card show today for $30 just for the fun of it hoping to get a Mattingly rookie. I got 2 and was jacked. Any other stories of you guys buying older boxes and getting anything decent?

As a teenager in the late 90s I was huge ripken collector. I saw a dealer who had 1982 Fleer cards. I bought two packs. I ended up with a Ripken RC and an Al ("ALL") Hrabosky error card.

Last summer I bought a bunch of (81, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90) Topps boxes, which led to 89 and 90 Bowmans, then some Upper Deck, Fleer, Leaf, Studio and Score. No Ripkens, but Mattinglys, Boggs, and all of the other suspects. I ended up with a ton of commons and it was nearly impossible to get rid of them. I think I sold the early 80s stuff, donated some and threw the rest out. Now I'm stuck with stacks and stacks and stacks of pack-fresh HOFs and stars from this era. So, it was a lot of fun to relive my childhood collecting with these box breaks, but the aftermath has been a bit much to handle.

If anyone is looking for a specific star/HOFer from this era, I can probably help you out.

How many Sandbergs did you end up with after all those box breaks?

I bought a pack of 1982 Topps from a vending machine inside a supermarket and pulled a Ripken rookie.

Any Big Hurt's from the 90's material?

Occasionally I'll purchase a box from my childhood days. The last ones that I busted:

* One box of 1985 Donruss yeilded 1 Kirby Puckett
* One box of 1986 Donruss resulted in 2 Fred McGriffs
* One box of 1989 Fleer brought me 1 Griffey and 1 Billy Ripken ("FF")
* One box of 1989 Upper Deck yeilded 2 Griffeys, 2 Johnsons and 1 Biggio
* One box of 1990 Leaf II resulted in 2 Frank Thomas' and 1 Walker

Still a lot of fun!

Bought a box of 2000 UD Yankee Legends a few years ago and let my son (he was about 7 yrs. old at the time) open it and he pulled a Babe Ruth bat card that I let him keep. He had it graded by BVG a few years later and it got a 9.5. Best card memory and pull ever for either of us. Best thing was I didn't even pay for the box. I actually bought a different box and the cards were all stuck together in the packs and the seller sent me the Yankee box as a replacement!

Pete - I have a couple of 1991 Leafs that are available. Sharp corners. Taken directly from pack to sleeve. PM if interested.

This is something I've been doing lately. I grew up collecting mid-80s to early-90s and it's a great deal of fun to crack open some of the product for that era. The best part is that it's so cheap I can create a scenario that probably would've been unthinkable as a kid, like busting a case.

To give myself a bit more of a challenge I've been saving the packs with HOFers showing on the front or back, trying to complete a HOF pack set for the different years. The only one I'm really close on is 1987 OPC. I still need a pack with Schmidt, Niekro, Sutter, Gossage, and Ozzie Smith showing.

I've got a couple of cases of other issues on their way to me so hopefully I'll get close on another set or two soon.

I've got a ton of unopened boxes stacked in a closet. A couple of times a year I'll bust out a few beers and break a few open. Always a good time...

Last weekend I opened two boxes of 1996 Leaf Signature Series, one regular, one extended. It was so unreal finding all those fresh autos that had just been hiding away in packs for almost twenty years. The Mariano Rivera silver auto was definitely the find of the day.

I was actually thinking recently about busting some 83 Topps. Where's the best place to buy?

Baseball card exchange on ebay is always a good place to start. They're known for authenticating boxes.
