Leon, do you mean that's the only Brown Lenox in existence on the back of a Cobb ? Not that it matters to me, it was out of my price range two weeks ago. :(

Goodwin Auctions wrote those descriptions. I merely cut and pasted some of them to spruce up the post/thread. I would guess they mean it is in fact the only Brown Lenox of that variety of Cobb (known) but you would need to ask them. LL

Good luck everyone (although luck will probably have little to do with it).

Wow. Still some good prices (low) on some very rare cards.

I'm very surprised the Green-Joyce Ruth is so low - given that it's unique, it's got to get up in the $80K range, right?

Congratulations, Jack. It was very difficult to resist some of the cards in tonight's auction. In particular, I love the Kalamazoo Bats 'in action' card, the blank-back T216 Cobb, and the Kotton Cobb.

As I do every time they come up, I priced out the T206 'near set' (and I use the word 'near set' very loosely, as I really don't think leaving out that many major HOF'ers leaves the grouping with 'near set' credentials), and with the BP it's already close to retail. I don't get it.

+1 .....Drums "A" should be at $2000 tops now..... I t only takes a few with stupid money to crank up the market on the rarer backs....look at red hindus(lenox is inmho almost a tuf)!!another few whales are obviously hunting them down...These 2 backs(drum and red hindu) are very skewed inmho, like Hindu brown pricing is also...I think whomever won the BB laffy got a great price, I don't believe the writing on the back was a period printer note, but actually in this case kept the price low, the only known example southern leaguer bb, is a 4k + card...I sat out on all of them:o....

the krugs went about right for a tweener scrap...could've went a little higher

Hi,

Well, I finally did it. It only took me putting up a second and third mortgage on the house, scheduling an appointment to sell a kidney and a half next Monday, breaking open my childhood penny jar, heavy drinking, consulting an attorney regarding my upcoming divorce, and going to a casino with all my savings and betting on black several times in a row, but I did it with a minor $43000 or so. I now own three Drums. Wait, no, I forgot, my crazy bids of appx 5k on either an authentic or PSA 1 drum weren't even in the ball park. (I didn't bid on the Seymour for a board member).

What BS, first someone pays over 8500 for an authentic drum that looked like my kid found some scissors and thought it looked prettier with less edges, and then stuck the card to the bottom of his shoes with gum then ran around outside in the mud for several days. So now every drum is worth that or even a silly 24k? IMHO, People like this ruin an industry because it's probably only about money to them seeing as odds are these cards will hit the market again in another few years. Maybe I'm wrong and some diehards got them to keep forever, and good for them if so, but the prices are utterly stupid right now seeing as those authentics were worth maybe 1-2k on any day before these last two Goodwin auctions it makes it tough for collectors that don't have bottomless incomes to compete.

Those were great cards. I would say 'steals', but as far as prices go, the 'scrap' quality doesn't mean much unless it's attached to a T206.

As far as Drum prices, I agree that they are surprising; however, you see how collectors talk up backs on this board, and we have a few T206 collectors who understand back rarity AND have the means to easily pay these prices.

I'll keep collecting the fronts of the cards...where the beautiful lithographs actually are.

The Drum prices are crazy...which means it might be time to sell mine! How much longer could that market actually stay that high? I'm guessing someone is going for a set and the 1 of 1 sold them on paying top dollar. While I don't have a Seymour, I do have an ungraded(but it will grade) of another card listed as a 1 in the pop report. Which means chances are someone(or multiple people) has/have an ungraded Seymour/Drum out there too.

Edited to add: All but one card in the psa Drum report, is either population 1 or 2. The oh so common Griffith batting has four examples. So basically the pop report is going to be extremely low for any of these cards. Not that it shouldn't have been obvious already. Not only are Drum backs rare, they are spread over some many different subjects and some are graded by SGC, while others aren't graded. So finding a specific PSA example is always going to be nearly impossible

I asked the auction house about this question. They told me that SGC had some way of determining they are T216. I will need to do some more research on that. Unless the team designations or some other determiner makes them different I am not sure why they couldn't be d303 or e106 etc.... That being said none of them took off in pricing. This is that ole supply vs demand doesn't equal value equation we recently spoke about (imo). I managed to pick up 2 blank backed ones and 3 other ones. I was happy with the prices.

At least for the Chase, it could only be an E106 or T216 due to the team designation of Buffalo. I suppose either version with a blank back is equally rare, however.

As the old saying goes.....some people just have more money than brains....and in this case....it's very much true. Whoever won these cards better put them in a collection where they'll remain for a very, VERY long time as they're gonna be hard pressed to find another dumb f*ck like themselves to fork over that much money for those particular cards again. Happens all the time, morons who WAY overpay, decide they don't want it anymore, then hope to find another moron who will do the same, lol.......9 times out of 10, they end up taking the huge loss on resale. Always gives me a chuckle every time ;)

Blitzu
03-29-2013, 09:04 AM
I get frustrated for sure because I feel I'm overpaying with my bids and yet it's not even half the selling price. I'm also trying desperately to add any drum to my collection for the love of the company, not the potential of some sort of investment. It's too bad, but yeah, eventually the stupidity will wear off and these cards will find the normal market value again.

Well I didnt win the seymour drum.... Im fine with passing on a card that is worth $5K.. and sells for $25K....maybe the winner thought it was a Ty drum back..... when he wakes up and realizes it was a Cy drum back hes gonna be pissed :)

I obviously watched the auction very closely... i am very confident that the same person won all 3 drums...

Throughout the entire auction it looked like in fact two guys wanted all 3. all 3 would get a bid at the same time.. then all 3 would get a bid again... I wanted the seymour drum... but for $24,000 ???? isnt that around T206 SGC10 Plank pricing?? I think ill take the Plank lol.

Sorry Jaime that you missed that one. Not that it mattered but I layed off it, I respect other collectors and their goals just as much as mine. I'm still upset myself not having a chance at even an authentic for less than 8k. I thought the Seymour might reach 6 at most... My jaw dropped this morning when I saw it go off at 24.

as some may doubt the T206 set, in general, or pre- war cardboard, of possible "down " trending.....the set is just simply following wagner.....it's the ultimate set, and it's starting to show....;)....sorry some haters...

there will always be "big fish" , even in the tough times.... and they know what to collect....Drum are not as rare as some other backs, but who knows when they will follow suite...

altho I didn't concentrate on rare backs, and don't own drum, uzit, bl 460 or the like, I do THANK GOD I collected what I did when I could.....:)

I know we've established that the M101-5 Ruth rookie is plentiful, but I'm still surprised how low this one went.

And I'm stunned at how high the extremely partial T206 grouping went. Goodwin did a great job of marketing it, but still - you've got the items graded individually and a ready-made spreadsheet provided. It doesn't take much to calculate retail value.

Hey Pete,

Great get - love Crawford cards!

I got the Kotton Matty (not blank backed) that I believe was part of Dave Levin's find a couple years ago of T216s and other LA-based cards.

I was very surprised that the T216's didn't sell for more bucks. The unique blank banks went lower than I expected, and the Kotton backs were pretty cheap. I picked up one of the Kottons and I was very happy with the price even with the vig and the shipping added in.
