This is a thread that is a spin-off of the Top 30 Pre-War HOFer post here: Link (http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=165602). It is very difficult for most people including myself to rank the pre-1900 Hall of Famers, so wondering if the experts had an opinion of this. Here is the ranking that I created based on the year the player was inducted into the Hall of Famer. (The earlier the induction, the higher.) No executives or managers were included.

(Year of Hall of Fame induction in parens)

01. Cy Young (1937) (more of his work pre-1900)
02. Cap Anson (1939)
02. Buck Ewing (1939)
02. Willie Keeler (1939)
02. Old Hoss Charles Radbourn (1939)
06. Dan Brouthers (1945)
06. Ed Delahanty (1945)
06. Mike "King" Kelly (1945)
06. Jim O'Rourke (1945)
10. Jesse Burkett (1946)
10. Thomas McCarthy (1946)
12. Kid Nichols (1949)
13. Billy Hamilton (1961)
14. John Clarkson (1963)
15. Tim Keefe (1964)
15. John Ward (1964)
17. Pud Galvin (1965)
18. Joe Kelly (1971) (split 50/50 pre-post 1900)
19. Mickey Welch (1973)
20. Sam Thompson (1974)
21. Roger Connor (1976)
22. Amos Rusie (1977)
23. Ned Hanlon (1996)
24. Bid McPhee (2000)
25. Deacon Smith (2013)

Obviously, induction order might not mean much, but still may given some idea of how these players were thought of in the past.

Edit: I've gone ahead and added the rest of the Pre-1900 HOFers into the list. (Hope I didn't miss anyone.) Based on the list above, and excepting McCarthy given Paul's comment, it looks like the Top 12 were the "no-brainers" since it took another decade before another player from this era was inducted.

Edit 2: Oops, forgot John Clarkson

Bid McPhee and Deacon White need to be added to the list. Hugh Jennings should also be added because he was elected as a player. Tommy McCarthy should be dead last on the list.
