View Full Version : Trivial T206 Question
Can anyone explain why Cy Young appears to be wearing a Philadelphia Athletics uniform on this card? He never played for the A's. He left Cleveland in mid-1911 and went to Boston. I suppose he could have worked out with the A's before signing with the Braves.
The problem with this explanation is that this card has a Series 350 back, so it would have been printed before the 1911 season even began. So can anyone explain this uniform?

There should be a B on the other side
Boston Americans.
That makes sense, except that none of the other Boston player have a "B A". Their uniforms all say BOSTON in red letters on white uniforms. Besides, Cy left Boston after 1908.

I think he played for the Boston Rustlers in 1911.

Here's a cool display of the evolution of Red Sox uniforms.
I think he played for the Boston Rustlers in 1911.

He played for both Cleveland (for the first half of 1911) and the Boston Rustlers (for the second half). I still don't get the "A" on his uniform.:)

This is a very nice composite showing players in uniform.

Thanks Jake. I still don't understand why he would have an "A" on his uniform in 1910. I love that 1908 uniform. They occasionally wear it as a throwback. I think Boston has one of those classic uniforms, along with St. Louis, that I really like.:)

I believe some of the photos used to make the T206 set were taken years before the set actually came out.

I think you are looking at the pictures and the cards in todays light. Back then people didnt just carry around their cell phone, snap pictures and get them on instigram as fast as they can. Back then the process was probably painstaking by todays standards and they just used what was available to get them onto cards. Just thinking out loud.

Jake, I think you guys are right. While it seems odd that they would picture Cy in an old uniform from a team he had left a couple years earlier, that certainly makes more sense than this being a jersey from a team for whom he never played. It must be an old style Boston uniform. Thanks everybody.

Many of the photos used in T206 were from years prior. Most of the Carl Horner portraits were taken early to mid '00s (aughts).
No doubt they were Carl Horner photos. I think it was Boston Americans is what the BA stood for, but not sure. I have shown this, mainly to heckle Peter S, but it still fits in the thread....

Check out Unglaub's uniform. The laced up front was, I believe, a thing of the past by 1909. I recall someone on Net54 saying it was the only laced up front in T206, and I think he's right.
