Beautiful cards everyone.

Very happy with this card from LOTG auctions because:

1) It is my first E98
2) It has my favorite E98 background - I'm a sucker for the bright colors on old cards
3) Walsh is laughing on it - cards that have players smiling/laughing make me smile too
4) It is from the Rudy Strejc collection - a little extra history attached to a card never hurt anyone

I've had had to cut myself off for this month (January over-indulgence), but I got this one in just under the wire on the 31st and it arrived today. I love these things. The illustrations are great and the advice is sound...."Never slide headfirst. Too much chance of you getting hurt and your team losing a valuable man."

This is seriously too cool.

Thanks. There were a couple of these Oh rookies listed on eBay recently, but as I learned maybe only about 50 or so in existance. Both went unsold. I contacted the sellers, agreed on a deal with one of them, and in the meantime learned a lot about Japanese cards through email back and forth with both of them. Couldn't be happier with the card, and with the pleasent exchanges that came with it.

I love this addition to my HOF collection.
Only graded example at any level, as according to my research this same card accounts for the single Auth grade from both SGC and PSA. Maybe someone was hoping for a 1 on a crossover?

My new favorite card, and my first Zeenut, Kid Durbin from the 1912 issue. What makes him so special? He was a bit player for the 1907 & 1908 World Series champion Chicago Cubs! It arrived earlier this month through a Net54 transaction.

Ha! I was trying to figure out what that was under his arm. I recognized the glove, but I thought he was holding something else under his arm, as well. I didn't even notice the different shirt sleeve colors. :)

Tax stamp is 1909. Factory 240, 1st District of PA. I believe that factory was known for producing T205s or T207s, but after the 1909 date I'm sure.

Still a sweet piece of history for me to own.

I think the Kelley presents very well, despite the paper loss on the front and couldn't beat the price.

okay, forget that last part.

I think I have seen one, where his signature was like his facsimile signature on his '52 Bowman I believe where it is a more upright signature. I've seen a decent amount of baseballs with a rookie sig.

I've got his minor league era sig on a ball from 1950 and it is almost exactly like the facsimile from his old cards.. wish I had a pic or scan of it to post. Definitely does not have that loopy M that he developed over the years. On the topic of dream cards and '51 Bowman era rookie centerfielders, I'd love to have a signed Mays rookie.. and it would be really cool if it were a period sig since his autograph got pretty silly with age.. those "4"s instead of W and M.

Awesome Mantle BTW, congrats!

Wow, that's a hell of a ball! I love his minor league/rookie era sig a lot more! Yeah Mays has an ugly sig now, my signed '51 Mays looks decent for his sig now, but an era signed one would be amazing! The only era signed one I have is my '55 Killebrew and maybe a '60's Aaron on his rookie.

And thank you!

Thanks, it's been pretty thoroughly toned by the years and oily hands but for sheer sentimentality and connection to my dad, it is the most important possession I have. I know they arent much to look at but in my opinion they are very hard to obtain. Have seen a few team sets at different Nationals but never saw a Wheat for sale or I would have bought it. I have been collecting the M113 & M114 supplements for many years, and as of today have accumulated 765 different ones, but up until last month, I had never seen an example of a Mickey Mantle.

In the most recent Henry Yee auction, he had some printing plates matched with examples of their supplements, but his Mantle printing plate did not come with a supplement, so I took this as proof that they exist, but also proof that they are hard to come by.

So, when one popped up on ebay at the end of January, with that classic shot of him batting righty, I was very happy to make it my own, even if his name is spelled wrong at the bottom.

Imagine my surprise when less than two weeks later, a second Mantle appeared on ebay, this one the classic lefty batting pose, with the added bonus of his original #6 visible. I also was happy to give it a new home.

Picked up this 1961 original wire photo of Mickey Mantle. I really enjoy the press photos as they are pretty unique and the action shots are incredible. (I think I should have put this in the memorabilia section-my bad!)

This is a beautiful pic of Mantle chasing Babe Ruth's home run record during the 1961 season. I am going to get it graded and display it next to my Mantle Hartland Statue.

I also picked up the E101 Bescher in the Sterling Auction. It has a bad back but the front has great presentation.

Is that dried blood on it? :D

Yes, from the underbidder. If I can find out who was the second highest underbidder, there will be more :)

I'm even a sore winner

I concur -Such unusual behavior, it requires further study. ;) I would like to see anyone else that owns a Corcoran to post their Corcoran! We need to start a dual thread : "Please post your Corcoran"

Arduous would be a good word. He isn't the easiest card to find. I got the first one 19 years ago, but have only seen two in the last two years and the previous last one was July 2011

I would say there aren't 100 out there, so that isn't a realistic goal. I know of about 10 more in collections. At most I've seen 40 over the last 19 years for sale/auction and two of those are in the collections I just mentioned. I say at most because I'm not sure the other 2-3 aren't ones that were resold over that time

I agree, I think only the most common OJs break the 100 mark.

Very glad to add this piece to my collection. I am a sucker for well loved cards. Would have really enjoyed seeing the look on the SGC grader's face when he received this though.

Great card, Best...I'm sure the grader took one look at that and felt that it was going to be the easiest money he was going to make all year long...no thinking involved in!

Now that's what a 1 is supposed to look like!! Almost seems like there's more disparity in the 1-2 range than there is in 9-10

To add: I wonder if Francis just had a bad day or two in the teens, or if it was a 100+ years of gradual cumulative abuse. Congrats on the pick up though!

Extremely pleased with February thus far, first McGlone, now a nice Pete Conway. This particular pose was only issued in 1888 which makes it pretty tough. Thank you Toby!

You guys are funny. I rarely pick up pre-war cards but thought it was amazing what this card had gone through over the years. Yet, it was clearly cherished by someone, or I don't think it would still be around 100+ years later.

Thanks to the Net54 board member that sold me this. It has got a great home now, and will likely stay in my shoebox for years to come.

John, nice pick up, I have always thought that was a bit of an under-rated Dots Miller card due to the fact that he passed away that same year (In September if I remember correctly), he joins a few others in the Zeenut set pictured in the year that they met their untimely ends.

Included in that group is the 1912 posthumous batting champion Heinie Heitmuller who contracted a fever and passed away near the end of 1912...

Also included in this unfortunate club is Laverne "Larry" Chappell who contracted the Spanish Flu during the epidemic of 1918 and passed away that same year...

Thanks Rhett. I'm not sure if you know, but I have some relatives in common with Dots, so they were really interested in seeing his last card. None of them had seen that image before, so I was real happy to finally get it.

That Tolstoi was purchased by me a few years ago (with 2 others) for a few $$. All had the same 'look'. Couldn't stand it - even in my beater set. Upgraded all 3 and gave the Pfeffer to Rob for his Tolstoi project. He had it graded. Glad it has a new home. Don't get too close....:D
