One of the great managers. Interesting guy. I read he got thrown out of both ends of a doubleheader. Now that rocks!!
RIP Earl....

Interviewed him for profile for SPORT magazine about 30 years ago. He was indeed, a riot. Turns out we both saw Don Zimmer's last HR. He was manager of the Buffalo club around 1967, which moved to my hometown of Niagara Falls due to race riots. As sometimes happened in those days, when rosters got short, managers who had played in the bigs would activate themselves for a day or two. So Zim did that and hit a dinger. When I told Weaver that, he said he was managing the Rochester club at the time, and the dinger was hit off--Jim Palmer! Weaver, who had love/hate relationship with Palmer ,said he never let him forget it...

Great youtube clip, Steve! (nsfw)

What a little firepot!

Rest in peace Mr. Weaver and when St Peter opens the gate, don't argue or waste any time getting through!

My favorite manager ever is gone, joining my second favorite, Alfred Manuel Martin in that Big Ballyard in the sky. Now, guys, don't argue over who will get tossed out first by Nestor Chylak:(:)

I met Earl at an autograph signing in 1999 or 2000, I'm not sure which. He turned out to be a really friendly guy.I was surprised, because every time I saw him on television he was screaming at an umpire.:)

Pretty sure he was one of the only HOF managers to never play in the majors. (Not sure if Frank Selee did, either). But did Earl Weaver ever play minor league ball?

Just goes to show that releasing one's anger can lead to a ripe old age.

Of all the managers I watched Earl Weaver reminded me the most of John Muggsy McGraw. Fiery, ascerbic with a great knowledge of the game.
RIP Earl...

Joe McCarthy is another HOF manager who never played in the majors

Bust out the headphones. Though this isn't suitable for work or the kiddies, it's worth listening to:

Looks like Weaver and McCarthy are the only two Mangers in HOF without playing MLB. But it appears that Selee should be on the list also.

Yes, he was an infielder in the Cardinals system.

Also, it appears Ed Barrow managed but never played in the majors. I guess, he is classified as an executive in the Hall, though.
