View Full Version : tobacco card packaging...

We talk a lot about tobacco cards so a thread about the packaging they came in seems relevant. It's always fun to see some of the packs, boxes and associated items. I haven't added much tobacciana to the collection lately so it will be some previously seen items, on my part...

Drum and Carolina Brights packs must be hard to find. I have not seen those before either, but I have not really followed the packs.

Do y'all know if this information is correct about T213 distribution...

I thought I remember Ted Z. posting about T213's being distributed in large cartons. Maybe both methods were used or maybe I have misremembered again. Thanks.

You buy the cigarettes, collect the coupons, mail them in with your choice of player (Matty!) and sooner or later an envelope from Jersey City arrives with your prize.

Love the Drum and Carolina Brights packs!! Never seen either one! I only have the easy ones, Sweet Caporal and Piedmont. The pride of my tobacco collection though are my Hindu and Old Mill ads including an entire New Orleans Daily Picayune newspaper with a huge Hindu ad. Thanks for sharing the pack pics everyone.

Most packaging is much scarcer than their associated cards as the packaging would have been discarded after use. Yes, the first 2 shown are quite scarce, as well as many others in this thread. These are the only 2 of these I have seen so far..T216

Pardon me for this modification, ole buddy. It's my opinion that the 1910 "COUPON" cigarettes were never in the standard ATC cigarette packs.
They were distributed in cartons of 500 - 1000 loose cigarettes (tightly packed). These cartons can be identified by the label.... "COUPON" Cigarettes.

As, I'm sure you know, the carton you have displayed is for the T213-2, or T213-3 issues (circa 1914-1919)....as the "Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co." label implies.

Here is a similar carton............

Leon - I was the unfortunate underbidder on both of those Drum and Carolina Brights packs. Incredible pick-ups!

Here's a few that haven't been shown yet....T206 brands, of course.

1) UZIT, ATC Factory 30, 5 pack (shell only)
2) Sweet Caporal harder to find Factory 42 (shell only)
3) Cycle 20 pack shell - not T206 era, but cool litho graphics
4) Side of a post-T206 era Sovereign pack that states "Tobacco Never Harmed Anyone". Gotta love it!

Please keep this thread going!

I only collect post-war stuff, so I have a 'newbie' question. Are there unopened cigarette packs floating around out there (on ebay or at auction) with t206 cards in them? And what would one look for if they were somehow to run across an old unopened pack in, say, some antiques store?

Yes that was the one - was unopenet too - I dont have the link but i think it went for like $275.

My qyustion would be is there a baseball card in there? or some obscure card?

The Red Sun on the far right dates to approximately 1903-07. The graphics then changed and the one on the left would have been more appropriate for the distribution of cards. Both of those are scarce. I've never seen another one of the "Butler" boxes (other than the one pictured), and I've only seen 2 of the "card appropriate" Red Sun packs - both of which ended up in China.
