Here is a photo of the 1941 NYY that has been signed by Ed Barrow in June of that year. DiMaggio is there at the far left of the third row. I could take a better pic later on if anyone was interested seeing more of it.

This one is actually during the series that Dimaggio's famed streak ended! It is an awesome image of a young Feller and Dimaggio in their Primes shooting the.....:) I can't remember what the exact date is but it does have the original slug(need to ck it out next time I go to the safety deposit box) :)

the final picture does not belong to 1941 but is a great piece I got from Steiner Sports. Steiner sports acquired the diary at auction and made great displays from each page.

Not sure I agree with your sentiment, but your wording is accurate. They did indeed destroy a "collectible" in order to turn it into "product".

there were a hundred or two hundred pages in the diary. so instead of one person obtaining a diary, Steiner made a lot of great looking pieces that collectors can proudly display.

I do agree with you, it's awful when they cut down bats and Jerseys for those silly premium sports cards.

Not sure we're going to find middle ground on this one. The diary was sold as "Joe DiMaggio's Diary," not a collection of "200 individual pages of Joe's musings." I really don't see it as that much different from cutting up a jersey or a bat so that 200 people can enjoy a sliver of the whole rather than one person owning the bat or jersey. If providing for the enjoyment of the masses was their paramount concern, Steiner would have scanned the diary and printed up copies of it. Steiner is certainly good at making "a lot of great looking pieces," but I don't for a second think that their motivation is sharing the diary with as many fans as possible.

I really should read up on these things before I start ranting:

"Unlike most people who begin diaries, DiMaggio did not buy a notebook; instead, he wrote on random pieces of paper, often loose sheets of paper with hotel logos. Approximately 2,500 sheets of paper (most held in a protective sleeve), filling 29 binders, have been collected and are now for sale by Steiner Sports."

So it appears that Joe was too cheap to even buy a notebook, let alone an actual diary, so the pages were already separated. I stand by my evaluation of Steiner's motivations ($), but the comparison to hacking up jerseys and bats doesn't fit in this case since the "diaries" really did start out as individual pages of Joe's musings. :p

I did like The Onion's story regarding the diaries though:

Plus my neighbor Janet, who is another one of those hateful attractive blondes." Here we see Joe D with Eddie Smith of the White Sox. Joe and Eddie pose in the dugout at Comiskey after the Yankees beat the Sox 5-4.

Eddie Smith had given up hit number one to start the streak and hit number 32 to extend the streak. Hit number 55 came the night this photo was captured.

At least when it comes to collecting tickets, the last game of the hitting streak (game 56) would be much more valuable than when the streak ended (game 57).

Most collectors collect the sizzle, not the fizzle, so to speak...

I was also shocked at the realized price on eBay. I know guys that have collected tickets and programs to Joe D's streak that wouldn't touch items relating to the end of the streak with a ten foot pole, FWIW.

I understand the thought process.. But it is still a great ticket. If I remember correctly, the day the streak ended for gehrig ticket went pretty well in a heritage auction last year. i dont collect joe d streak items i i would have touched it. I do see your point though.
