im looking into buying a hugh duffy cut or 3x5 auto and i'm just not really sure what i should pay for it?

Thats about right. He's fairly easy to find too on 3x5's or GPC's ....On unique items photos or letters there is a major price jump. I've sold Duffy letters for $1,500-$2,000

Unrelated but Jim's answer made me think...is there much of a difference between 3x5s and GPC's? In terms of quality I mean, is one preferrable to the other?

all other things being equal (quality of auto), I'd say GPC b/c of the post markings / date.

Dates and/or post office location markings help assure the auto's validity and add character to the item.

Agreed GPC's are preferable by maybe 20% -30%
