As always, Phil, I'm very jealous of your RC collection. Nice group! I haven't owned an OJ in about 8 years when I owned a Ward. I think I got the SGC 10 back then for around $80. Ugh.....

Love the Ed Delehanty! Too bad he got pushed off that train (as the story goes). Great old cards.

jimivintage
11-20-2012, 07:35 AM
Yes, not only did he supposedly jump off that bridge into the Niagra Falls, but he's famous also for a pretty "shameful" home run:

Delahanty was also the victim behind one of "The Most Shameful Home Runs of All Time" according to the third edition of Bruce Nash and Allan Zullo's series, "The Baseball Hall of Shame." In July 1892, when Delahanty's Phillies hosted Cap Anson's Chicago White Stockings at Philadelphia's Huntingdon Street Grounds (aka National League Park), Anson hit a fly ball to center in the top of the eighth inning. The ball hit a pole and landed right in the "doghouse," a feature unbeknownst to everyone then until that moment; it was used to store numbers for the manually run scoreboard. Delahanty tried to get the ball (it was still in play) by first reaching over the doghouse, then crawling down into it, but on the latter attempt, he got stuck, and by the time teammate Sam Thompson had freed Delahanty from the area, Anson crossed home plate on what the "Baseball Hall of Shame" book calls an "inside-the-doghouse home run."

Yikes!

I had to sell my favorite last year shortly after getting it. After we had some money back in the bank, my wife said "you should try buying it back". What a supportive wife, but it was long gone.

Now I am left with this lone example from the Old Judge set. Though, I believe this copy is from 1889 (not 1887).

This thread made me pull out "The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company 1886-1890, Old Judge's baseball cards" (Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski and Richard Masson) last night and read through it some more.

My 2 year daughter saw me reading it and said "Bible?" (We read the Bible most nights before bed). I explained, no, it was baseball cards, she got up in my lap and looked through it with me flipping the pages.

Bonding with my 2 year old daughter over Old Judge baseball cards :D

Thanks Chris. Yes, he is very difficult to find. The only other one I remember seeing for sale was much more expensive and had a badly faded photo. Like I said up top, I try to avoid the pink tint OJ's but sometimes you have to make exceptions or you may give up your only chance to get a player/mgr for a long time.

I passed on the Madden/leaning on rock pose at the 2003 National, regretted it immediately and haven't found another one since.

One more post for today. Back when the law firm of Miller, Masson and Gonsowski asked me to help out with the Old Judge book, among other things, I took on the task of researching the bios. One particular player, who wasn't in my group, remained a mystery until near the end. So I spent a week trying to figure out if there really was a Whiteacre, or was it Pat Whitaker spelled wrong, like it had been suggested for many years. The name "Whiteacre was listed on the Reserve List for the Philadelphia Athletics over the Winter of 1887-88, but no player with that name ever played minor/major league ball. After searching daily for hours a day, I finally stumbled upon an obscure book about the town of Kennett Square, Pa with an 1886 team photo of the town's amateur team and in the corner was a match, a man named Harry Whiteacre! This card may only be a psa1, but it is one of my favorite cards because 120 years later, he finally had a name and wasn't misidentified as someone else from the set anymore.

Matthew H
12-07-2012, 11:17 AM
Chris, great Barnie.

John, thats interesting... Whiteacre has to be one of the sneaky tough, right?

About Monk Cline, I had a similar thing happen to me when I realized I had three Black Jack Burdock poses, I was looking for the last two... Until one day I had a lapse of judgement and sold my portrait card of him. I miss that card, oh well, live and learn. At least I know where it is. :)

Look at Mr OJ-NJ showing off again! Breaking out the Henry and Daniels, excellent cards! Didn't know you had either of those. Where is the jealous emoticon when you need it...

I could not have gotten as far as I have collecting OJs without the great trades and buys from Net 54 members, many of whom have posted in this thread. One more example of why this site is one of the best things in this hobby!

As for being Mr. OJ NJ, I don't know about that. You've got me on quantity, John, and I cannot brag about having more Larry Corcorans than anyone else in the world! :)

Hey I tried to trade with you yesterday! What about all the great trades that didn't happen with board members? I can't even give away my Cod Myers to you so it just shows that my cards aren't good enough for the OJ-NJ collection. BTW, why doesn't SGC put that on your labels when you submit them? Might boost the value in the future. :)

PS Leave the Corcoran collection alone, they have done nothing bad to you

If it'll make you feel better, I'll let you give me your Cod Myers! ;)

Doesn't Candy Nelson just look like you'd expect a 19th century baseball player to?

Yes, he does. And amazingly, that's how the hipsters dress today! 19th Century style has returned!

It is cool scrolling through these pages and seeing so many of my previously owned cards. At one time I was three players shy of the complete player list for Cinicnnati. Now I am down to just a few of my uncle Paul's cards.
