In 1923 Coast League pitchers never threw it right down the middle of the plate. Levere was unique because he could hit outside pitches with the barrel and inside pitches with the handle. This concept was later applied to putters in golf, which was Levere's second love.

Wow....great stuff Frank. You sure he wasn't just about to slide his left hand down for a suicide squeeze? :)

Although records of his success with this technique are sparse --- 4 for 27 at the major league level, he lived to the ripe old age of 83 and was never considered a suicide risk on or off the diamond (or the links).

He was posing for the Zeenut card and wanted to make sure the entire bat fit.

Leon...I never noticed this odd batting pose before...1923 was an especially goofy pose year for Zeenuts. I have included a couple of group scans of other wacky Zeenuts, including two more from 1923. Enjoy.
