I'm still plugging along with my 1950s and 1960s SGC graded 84 or higher Cardinals team sets, but I have recently started a new project — Bowman Chrome and Topps Chrome blue refractor Cardinals.

I wanted to still keep one foot on the modern scene as I worked my way through the 1950s and 1960s. Lately, I feel like I have been neglecting my 50s and 60s and focusing on the blue refractors.

So my question is... how do you balance the two (if you do collect both post-war and modern)? If you put a percentage, what would it be? I'm just curious as how you split the two...

I collect Baseball Hall of Fame Rookie Cards (one of each), both pre-war and post-war.

I don't touch the new stuff.

I don't like that they're prefab collectibles that seemingly only change hands between collectors and not kids.

The artistry pales to that of their 50s counterparts, and I find little to respect or admire about the players themselves.

All this on top of being a lousy investment.

I stick with 50s and earlier.

I'm a little on the unusual side regarding what I collect- my main focus is pre-1960 but after that, I skip over the 60's, 70's- (although I am looking for a 72' Topps cloth Hank Aaron; shameless plug- if you have one for sale let me know :D ), 80's..and go right to 90's insert cards...no method to my madness, I just collect what I like.

Don't worry about touching it Brian. I don't think it is catching :)

I'm currently collecting mostly St. Louis Cardinals, so I buy everything from Pre WW2 to the present, although I will admit, I don't really know a whole lot about the stuff from the last 10 years.

But that doesn't stop me from buying David Freeze, John Jay or Jaime Garcia cards, especially when they are cheap.

I collect all of the above, but with the modern cards it mainly is factory sets of topps and a box or two of this and that each year. This is not because I dsilike the modern cards but because there are no more card shops anywhere near me. So slowly but surely I complete vintage sets and keep up to date with the modern sets.

If it doesn't fit in my bicycle spokes, I have no use for it.

So my question is... how do you balance the two (if you do collect both post-war and modern)? If you put a percentage, what would it be? I'm just curious as how you split the two...

Here's how my actual collection breaks down:
Pre war 5% (started collecting pre-war in 2009 after a 10 to 15 year hiatus)
Post war 1942-1979 15% (includes a hofer topps/bowman/leaf type set, complete 72 and 73 sets - first two years I collected as a kid)
80's 30% (includes 1 monster box full of my favorite bought-in-the-80's cards, and 6 or 8 vintage reprint sets)
90's 40% (includes 1 monster box full of my favorite bought-in-the-90's cards, my Barry Larkin collection, and two triplicate sets I keep in binders warhol-style)
2000 and later 10% (includes 50 or so from 05 and 07 heritage, 09 ud Goudey set and 09 allen+ginter sets - those got my started in pre-war )
2010 and later 0% (Don't want to get into the habit of buying current cards)

Here's the percentage based what I am actively collecting at the moment:
Pre war 92% ( see the "what are you collecting" thread in the main forum)
Post war 1942-1979 <1% (only looking for a 57t BRobby in Fair to Good)
80's 1% (casually adding to my Barry Larkin collection)
90's 5% (need a 95 ud cc se gold signature #185 Canseco, slowly working on two autographed 90's sets, and adding to my Barry Larkin collection)
2000 and later 1% (casually adding to my Barry Larkin collection)
2010 and later 0% (Don't want to get into the habit of buying current cards)

I am a team collector. I collect the Yankees. ALL Yankees. This allows me to buy a 1906 Fan Craze or a 2012 Update Topps card, and everything inbetween.

I find this is a fantastic way to collect, as you wind up with such a varied collection. I have great old cards from the early 1900's yet still look forward to each new set coming out now as I want the Yankees from all years.

I try to get my hands on EVERY Yankee card i can from 1980 and older, and on 1981 thru current i try to get every Yankee card that i like, there are too many modern cards to collect all of them as they dont all interest me, but i have a good representation of each year.

I do like the old cards best, 1960 and older, but love them all.

My collection has everything from N172's to a full 1981 Topps hockey wax box.

As much as I'd like to be a disciplined collector it just isn't going to happen....and I'm OK with that.:)
