In thinking about rare and unusual type cards, one of the most challenging issues in my 25+ years of collecting has been the Texas Tommy.
I recently went through more than 200 auction catalogs and found only 4 Texas Tommy examples --- that is nearly 100,000 lots.
Does anyone know the real story why these cards are so rare? Does anyone have examples that they would like to share?

Welcome Bruce!
I believe Leon's auction has one, unless I'm confusing the issue. I personally don't know anything about them, or if there are more than one issue...

Issue #7 of Old Cardboard has a great article on them. I think the type 2's are amazing.

You outed the Texas Tommy Austin, Pete. Tsk tsk! I didn't expect my $900 bid to hold up, though :). See the T204 Plank there?

wasn't Leon's "Trucker Boy" find mostly Texas Tommy's, or am I thinking of something else?

There were around 5 Texas Tommy's in that find including an uncataloged common, which for this series, was uncommon to find. Some of the (even) more esoteric sets I kind of figure to find more cards of, such as those D382 Tarzans. Those didn't surprise me. An unknown E224 type 1 did.
