I've had several Jake Daubert autographs over the years, The last ones being two signed documents in the Fred Lieb/Conlon collection I purchased about 8 years ago. Both sold then for $3,500 each. What boosts the price is rarity, he died in 1924, He played for Brooklyn and he was a member of the 1919 Cincinnati Reds.

This is my first post to this forum - I have attached one of my Daubert signatures - it is out of focus a bit but should give you a good example. This may be one of the autographs that Mr Stinson mentioned in his recent post.

Thanks for posting the above, Yes that is one of the documents that came out of the Collection. It was a pretty amazing group. Bill Corcoran and I bought it in its entirety. In 1921 writer Fred Lieb along with photographer Charles Conlon were going to release a set of cards of the players and had every rostered player sign the release documents. (Including Daubert) , Then in 1928 they did the same, so there were two sets of documents. Then a printers strike followed by the Great Depression doomed the issue of the card set. The only names missing when we bought the collection were Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig which the original owner had given away back in the 1950's

Thats a popular team to collect. And a real challenge I might add. There are several tough autographs from that team Jake Daubert being among them , However the REAL Rarities will eventually prove to be SHERRY MAGEE (Died-1929), MANUEL CUETO, CHARLIE SEE, BILL RARIDEN (Died-1942). Tough but obtainable would likely be IVY WINGO, SLIM SALLEE, MORRIE RATH, JAKE DAUBERT. There are a dozen or so easy and inexpensive names to find after that it gets interesting, (and expensive...smile) . Good luck with the project

Jim,
I believe that Hod Eller is a pretty tough sig from the 1919 Reds.
Have you found him to be challenging as well, just out of curiousity?
Here is my Hod Eller GPC (1946) from the Charles Keith collection.

I forgot Eller, he died in 1961 so he is by no means easy but not quite as tough as Sallee or Wingo. Thats a fine looking GPC by the way

Thanks Jim! I looked for quite awhile for a GPC or 3 x 5 for Eller, and I'm proud to own him.

I did own a pencil A/P with Eller and a couple of other players that returned for an Old Timer's game, but I upgraded to this a few years ago.

I've only personally seen three examples of his sig surface over the last 8-10 years, so he's got to be pretty challenging, FWIW. I think Kevin Keating currently has one, but the price is $$$.

.

Artemus "Nick" Allen, died 1939.

Rhys Yeakley (prewarsports) has a beautiful, single-signed album page available (IMO, at a more than reasonable price).

Here is the endorsed signature from a 1920 Cincinnati payroll check, currently offered by Quality Autographs & Memorabila of Virginia . . .

I dont have an Allen anymore, but I had 2 at one time that came from when he was with the American Association in the late 1920's and I did have him on a team signed baseball once too. He is VERY rare as well.

Rhys,

Doesn't surprise me that you sold the Allen signed album page. It was priced right.

While not nearly as tough as several 1919 Reds autographs, there are some collectors who might consider Pat Duncan alittle tougher to locate too, despite having died fairly recently (1960) . . .

Duncan is tough, I got him on a 1920 Reds Payroll check (little damage) but it has his full name too.

OK, I can't stop - here is the manager of the 1919 Reds - P J Moran - he died in 1924. Rhys, loved that Cueto, is it in your collection?

Wow, I had no idea the Sallee was such a large and nice album page underneath that matted frame when I sold it, I figured it was a cut. Congrats on that, it is a beautiful autograph!
