Even though all the cards have front damage (some obviously much more than others) don't you believe getting those cards off will also cause back damage?? What do you think about the price it sold for?

That's more then I would have paid, but I don't collect t206

Anyone have any ideas how to remove old cardboard from wood? I found this link but am going to be sweating bullets when I get my hands on this piece?

I have soaked some stuff in the past but this will be taking things to the next level. I can't help but imagine some of the scraps are from a Polar Bear Wagner

What was simply amazing is that the cards above, below, and around the Demmitts disintegrated, but somehow those two rare cards survive the carnage of time. Makes you wonder how many more Demmitts were once on the lid.

Lovely Day...

Congrats on the purchase! I can't help you with the wood + T206 separation, but if you can't find a way to remove the cards yourself and you don't want to keep the lid as is. Perhaps Dick Towle might offer some help. I have never use his services, nor am I even sure if he is still a Net54 member, but if all else fails.

Good luck!

Okay, never-mind, I see you are aware of Dick Towle's skills. Next time, I will make a mental note to read any links provided before posting stuff.

Lovely Day...

One can only imagine the travels those cards have seen.
If it were mine I would leave it alone and display as is.

I agree about leaving it alone and displaying as is. If you do try and soak it, I would take a saw and cut one of the top beaters off and soaking it in water for a couple of hours and see if the glue will let go.

Keep it intact, have Beckett slab it.

I was bidding on it as well, but my bid was only $383, I didn't want to pay that much for 2 Demmitts I don't think you could get off that tool box lid. I was hoping no one else paid attention to it.

I was just doing some random ebay searches when I found that auction, almost did not take the time to look at the pictures, and when I saw 2 Demmitts, I could not believe it.

That piece is perfect the way it is. I wouldn't dream of trying to remove the cards.

I bid on it with the intention of removing one of the Demmitts to sell and leaving the other Demmitt and all other cards intact as is.

I bought it with the intention of removing the cards... but the more I think about it that plan may change. I was going to sell one of the Demmitts, along with the Cy Youngs and HOFs, to basically get a Demmitt for free but now I worry I might be destroying the true value (not to mention possibly the cards as well) in separating them. I can't wait to see it up close! Once I get them and take some better pics I may put a poll up and let the good people of Net54 decide it's fate.

Simply resell it as "T206...." and make a quick profit...
I like the idea of trying to extract one Demmitt and preserving the rest.

+1... that would be an easy double or more (in my opinion) with T206 in the title.

You think double or more?? :mad:Damn it!! When I bid my max snipe I believed it was a strong price.

It's interesting that the seller had 1909? 1910? and 1911? in the title but not T206. If he did enough research to know they were produced 1909-1911 why wouldn't he put T206 in there anywhere?

When I first saw the pics in the OP's first post, I didn't really like the piece. After I looked at the auction on eBay and saw the full lid with all the cards, I changed my mind and I really like it in it's entirety. And I agree that displaying it as is on the wall is a great idea. Very unique and special piece.

Best,

I think it sold for a good price and I think relisting it with a better description would bring marginal gains... Maybe an extra 25 percent but those profits would be washed out by eBay fees. It is a nice piece as it is. I would enjoy it as is. I think if you could liberate the demmitts that's the best way to turn a big profit but it is very risky. If you got them off with some sort of a back I think you could get 1500-2000 for the pair. If they came off as skins you would do well to get your money back. I would bet they are shellacked.

So what did you think after receiving the lid?

The lid is totally amazing. For starters the toolbox lid itself is SOLID. It has a lot of weight to it and a ton of character. The cards are obviously in rough shape but as a whole it presents well. They are glued on from the back side only so I think I could remove the two Demmitts but I have decided to keep it together as one piece. I currently have it hanging on my wall by the hinges which works perfectly. I am trying to find a more suitable method of display like an antique wood/glass display coffee table. Here is a photobucket link to some better pics:
