The National starts today, and I will be attending for the first time tomorrow. There will be many on the board who won't be making it to Charm City, so let's give them the chance to see what this event is all about!

After seeing the stacks and stacks of insanely high grade E98s from the Black Swamp find, I just wonder what is going to happen to the E98 market?? Is there enough demand to absorb all those high-grade cards?? Does the market for lower grade examples collapse? The whole E98 market?

There's enough demand to absorb them all, but the price structure for high grade E98 will change. Lower grade ones will probably be a little softer, too.

It's only a PSA 2, which is certainly below John's standards, so it looks like the bidding will be between Barry and I. LOL!

(And I'm prepared to go to $401)

There really weren't many high grade cards known at all. Maybe a few 7's, but certainly no 9's or 10's. Now they are relatively common. That said, the whole group will still find their way into collections.

The guy gave me no hassle and the choice of partial or total refund on the hidden paper loss. He apologized and said he didn't realize it was under the sticker. Either way I got it at actual value now so I am happy. 7042270423

Hi Scott- Oops! I forgot about your set. Sorry.:o

But other than yours, weren't high grade E98's almost nonexistent (pre- Black Swamp, of course).

Matthew H
08-02-2012, 01:20 PM
I'd look at the black swamp find as the only high grade e98 market. Before there was a mid grade market.

Lets say last year you could get a cobb in ex for around 6k, after the find, if you have 6k you're probably still going to compete for an ex example.

I enjoyed the video of the 1st day of the National but it looks like attendance is really down :( I know it is just the first day but it looked kind of sparse.
On the E98s, other than Scott's mind blowing set, I considered my E98 set of 5s a "high grade set." Now that is out the window with the Black Swamp Find. I still think low and mid grade E98s will continue to hold steady, just my 2 cents, regardless of how high or not so high the blazers from the Find go for. I do think the gap between E98s and E94s, however, will continue to escalate. The E94s have become very scarce, especially in nice condition....

Bob- E98's in a 5 are now scarcer than those graded 8 or 9. Kind of a bizarro world.

Here's a few I took today. Had a great time even though I only picked up four cards. Walked around with AG and Mike Healer for awhile. Met Chris buckler and pup6913. Also chatted with bowlingshoegiverouterguy and Leon. Looked through some of Dan McKee's cards (thanks Dan)! Spoke to zubes about the blue old mill. Also got to meet Brian Dwyer. Sent about three dozen texts to Chris Browne. Bought a card from Ted Z. Great day except that my Gilbert missing red ink still isn't slabbed :(

Here's earl writing me up to no avail

IMO this is not a good indicator of the state of the hobby. The way people do business has changed - the internet through its auctions and stores are the way now. Declining show attendance is a false indicator. (Similar to saying that the closure of 511 Borders stores shows people don't read anymore...nope...they just get their reading material from more modern sources, including the internet).

Oriole Park at Camden Yards is just a stone's throw from the Convention Center in Baltimore where the National is being held. I walked over to the stadium this morning to look around. The stadium was empty and the sprinklers were going. A rare site indeed, so I snapped a picture. Gotta love it!

Ran into fellow net54 member Larrie Dean and met Leon for the first time (thx for the shirt!). Heading back up tomorrow for the day and sticking around for the Net54 dinner - hope to meet as many of you as possible.

I'm not a big T206 back collector, so it's interesting to me to see so many of them slabbed by PSA with the back showing on the front of the slab like the ones in Jason's post.

Is this something you just have to ask PSA to do when you submit them? They look pretty cool that way, especially the Cobb back.

Thanks,

Yesterday was my first national, so I have nothing to compare it too. But in my opinion, there weren't many people there. I'm guessing it was because it was Thursday and there were very few autograph signers. I'd expect it to pick up the rest of the week.

That said, I spoke to a handful of dealers and all said they were doing well. One dealer in particular said that he already had his best National and he'd been doing it for ten years. His sales were mostly on signed memorabilia as I recall.

Bob, I can't comment on the E94 or E98 since I wasn't looking for them. I was specifically looking for E93's to build my set. I was especially hoping to find a poor/fair Cobb or Wagner, but had no luck. In general, there was not a huge selection. I don't remember seeing any of Chance and only a single example of several other cards. Prices in general were above recent auctions, but you could talk dealers down below the current buy it now prices. I ended up with a Leach (SGC 40), Jones (SGC 20) and Mathewson (SGC A - blank back).

Thanks for the photos Lyman and Brett. Large Ass(ortment) Herzog had a nice breakfast with my table-mates and myself one morning but mainly kept to himself until the Dinner. At the Dinner he was on the podium next to the speakers the whole time. For those that don't know (and no one that came to my table knew) the reason he is called "Large Ass" isn't because he has a big rear end. It's because on the back of the card there are paper remnants over part of the word "Assortment" and all you can see are the words "Large Ass"......I will be updating the other Bucky thread soon and looking for a member to take him on another trip. His log book has been updated and Bucky is hanging out in North Texas at the moment. Actually he is watching me type this and saying he is ready for some lunch!!
