Growing up in Northern New Jersey I had heard stories from my grandfathers and uncles about the great Negro league and semi-pro teams they saw play in Newark, Patterson, Clifton, Orange, Brooklyn and Queens. Everyone knew about the Yankees, Giants and Dodgers, but I always loved hearing about the other teams that were around back then. When I went to college in Baltimore I got interested in the Elite Giants which were based in Baltimore from 1938 to 1951 and was fortune enough to meet many of the former players and fans of that team. I always was on the prowl for scorecards used by the Elites but was always a day late and a dollar short... until I found this beauty a few years ago. It is a stock 1940's tri-fold Brooklyn Bushwicks (another interest of mine) semi-pro scorecard with a line up sheet paper-clipped inside.

I did some research and found out is was for Wednesday night, June 24, 1942. The Elite Giants beat the Bushwicks 6-3 at Dexter Park in Woodhaven, Queens. (The Bushwicks, though called the Brooklyn Bushwicks, actually played their games just over the border in Queens). The Elites had stars Roy Campanella, Wild Bill Wright, Bill Byrd, Henry Kimbro and Sammy T. Hughes in their line up that night and the Bushwicks, one of the strongest semi-pro organizations ever, fielded former major leaguers Al Cuccinello, Bots Nekola,Tony DePhillips and Walt Signer. Ed Boland, the NYC garbageman turned Washington Senator during the war, played rightfield that night.

Anyway, here is some shots I took of it, you don't get to see many Bushwicks or Negro league related scorecards so I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
