Do you collect cardboard and ink (autographs)?

I was never a memorabilia or autograph collector until I discovered this board back in April and started collecting cards again, and then I found myself pokin around to the other forums on here. In the few months that have followed my collection scope has grown to now include autographs as well as vintage cards.

How many of you cross over to memorabilia and/or autographs? Are your interests in cards and memorabilia similar? My interests are pretty similar as my autograph focus is on players who played in the pre-war era.

I never collected autos until I joined here. My card and auto collecting are pretty similar,cards I collect up to '80 and autos are any retired player.

... with an emphasis on both a variety of star cards (Ruth, Gehrig, Cobb, Mathewson, W. Johnson, Wagner, etc.) and Detroit Tigers ballplayers. Manufacturers ranged from T&E cards, to candy cards of the 1930's. Actually, I stared as a bargain hunter. I particularly had an interest in star cards from manufacturers that seemed to sell at a discount to their counterparts of the same period. One example would be the Ruth card from the Sport Kings series, which was selling for a fraction of any of the four 1933 Goudey cards. In that same series, the Cobb, Jim Thorpe, and Bobby Jones also seemed unappreciated and undervalued. Another example would be the 1932 U.S. Caramel cards of Ruth and Gerhig, which sold for a very small premium over their Goudey counterpart. This preference for relative value led to my entrance into E cards, which seemed to sell at a discount versus T-206's.

I sold most of my vintage cardboard afew years after I transitioned into collecting primarily pre-WWII Detroit Tigers ballplayers autographs. My goal was to attain autographs of as many of the Detroit ballplayers who played from 1901-1945 as possible. That journey has expanded to include several Detroit non-ballplayer personnel, vintage baseball "stars", and some tougher ballplayer autographs too. I still dabble with vintage cardboard from time to time, but too infrequent (IMO) to consider myself a collector anymore.
