And who says T206's are overrated and spoke of too much here. By looking at the pick ups thus far looks like they're still the main focus for many.
Great snags everyone.

tony that chesbro is a beaut...I've always coveted that card...but never owned one!

i think the discussions regarding T206 are commensurate with the % of T206 collectors on this board...definitely the most popular prewar set by far.

Jeff, I love the 3D CJ's

Bought the Polar Bear McGinnity without a back scan. It has the same "453" written in pencil as one I picked up off the b/s/t a little while back. I googled it and found out that McGinnity won 453 games as a professional pitcher. Pretty cool imo.

Great pickup! I also have to admit that Ritchey looks a lot like Graham Chapman from Monty Python.

My June pickup was my May pickup but with a better grade. Got this in the REA auction & took it to SGC Fri. They popped it out for me & I removed the slight pencil on the back with a Mars eraser(thanks Leon!). They then regraded it and it went from a SGC 20 to a SGC 40!

I highly recommend a Mars Plastic eraser for removing errant marks from cards. I don't consider it altering when you take something off that wasn't supposed to be there in the first place. Glad it worked. I have done it many times too. That being said I do leave some marks as they can add to the provenance and history (and even aesthetics) of the card, sometimes. I might start a thread about this topic. :)

This was the second time I used that eraser and it worked well both times. I spoke with Scott & Earl at SGC regarding the pencil removal, and Leon they echoed your thoughts. They said the pencil wasn't on the card originally, and to extract it back off was not altering the card. I did it right in front of them. Also, I agree that leaving marks can add to the provenance and history. Aesthetically with the mark on the back and in faint pencil, it didn't take away from the card and was easy to remove. It's a really sharp card, and in my opinion(and now SGC) deserved a higher grade. Important for the provenance of this specific card is they kept the same serial # of the Mack, and updated the grade in their system. They are now starting to catalog the Old Put Cigars now in their database upon their request of me providing scans of the ones in existence. Leon, I hope it's ok I included yours in the email so they can start accounting for them. They are adding them as a subset to the E98's. The million dollar question which has been debated previously is are they a caramel or a tobacco issue. If they were never in caramels and just stamped by Old Put, the argument can be made of them being a tobacco issue. From their perspective, they're going in as caramels under E98's.

Finally was able to get my hands on a low grade Matty portrait to complete the pose set... Took the three to my Framer & he was able to put somethign together to help display them (note all cards are in lucites)... PS if you are located in CT & are looking for a framer that can do custom stuff extremely affordable, take a trip to the Framer's Edge in Orange CT. The owners name is Jason, really chill guy and won't let you walk out the door dissatisfied!

Thanks Scott,

Funny thing is how I got each of them...

My dad bought me the black cap at a Halls Nostalgia auction when I was 10... Paid $70 for it, which was easily $35 too much for it at the time...

The white cap I picked up at a shriners show while i was in college... I saw it at a table and had to have even if the $65 asking price meant that I had to obstain from drinking cheap beer for a month!

The portrait came to me recently in a very fair trade with an excellent board member... THanks Mike!!!

NICE display Dave:)

Unless the back is missing, how can this be a 1? I just don't get this aspect of card grading--the relatively small degree of damage that can bump a card all the way down the scale. I guess the idea must be that this is the minimally acceptable condition for most collectors to consider, so it doesn't matter that 95% (or whatever) of examples of this card discovered will be in this condition or worse, so they should all get the same grade, allowing for much finer condition differences to account for the difference in grades of the other 5%. If this is the theory, I don't agree with it. It seems to me that grades should reflect the condition of the entire population of cards proportionately across the entire spectrum of the scale. Having said all this, I'm a memorabilia guy, so what do I know?

I guess the idea must be that this is the minimally acceptable condition for most collectors to consider, so it doesn't matter that 95% (or whatever) of examples of this card discovered will be in this condition or worse, so they should all get the same grade, allowing for much finer condition differences to account for the difference in grades of the other 5%. If this is the theory, I don't agree with it. It seems to me that grades should reflect the condition of the entire population of cards proportionately across the entire spectrum of the scale. Having said all this, I'm a memorabilia guy, so what do I know?

Guys thanks for the comments on the E98 Wagner...that's what I get for buying the card and not the holder;)

I added the back scan above too...its nice. The technical grade could be a SGC10, maybe a 20 if the grader is in a good mood. There is a slice lower right side that likely is the deciding flaw.

I don't see anything but BEAUTY when I look at the card.

Nice Sact'o card too Frank!

Brian, great Wagner! That small slit in the bottom right accounts for the 10. I bought it already in the holder, but it must go through the back of the card. Otherwise, it would be a solid 40. It's one of the nicest 10's I've ever seen with super color/image, and the nicest one I've owned.

That was a great card auction, I was an early underbidder, but turned towards some of the tougher high grade commons he had going at the same time. (wish he'd stagger his end times by a few minutes, so if you lose your #1 priority you can still get a different card.

Very excited to have received this tonight - from the SCP auction last month. It's my very first Cobb so it is somewhat of a moment for me! Pics I took aren't very good, but despite the back centering issue it is perfect for me - the colors are fantastic, the corners and edges are really nice, and the back is clean.

Got this back from SGC/JSA today. Of course, I'm happy that JSA authenticated the signature, but I couldn't convince SGC to put "Jeff Burdick Overstamp" on the flip. Apparently they don't want to get into the business of even suggesting the authentication of a stamp, which is more easily replicated. Still, an amazing and gorgeous card...

Apparently, back on July 23, 2008, I sent an email to Sean (milkit1) asking a question about the back of several cards he had listed on the B/S/T section. He replied less an ten minutes later that none of the cards had the stamp on the back I was looking for.

Fast forward three years, ten months and 26 days, I get another reply on the same email from Sean, saying he had found a card with Howe’s stamp on it if I was still interested. Two days later, #207 in the rebuilt collection arrives in my office.

<a href="http://s150.photobucket.com/albums/s81/T206ster/?action=view&amp;current=207Bradley.gif" target="_blank"><img src="http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s81/T206ster/207Bradley.gif" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I think, or hope, that this is what Network 54 is all about. It’s a bunch of adults who all admire little pieces of cardboard with men in short pants and spiked shoes pictured. It shouldn’t be about “how much is this worth?” or “someone told me this, but now someone else says ...”. Its about passion, and sometimes, you find someone who shares your passion, or at least someone who helps you with a fix when your habit needs it.

That said, I’d like to thank Chuck, Frank, Art, Paul S., Martin, Judson, Barry, Cy, Danny, Mark, Brian W., Coach Jeff, Jim M., Tom, Matt, Tony S., James M., Darren, Jim S., Leon, Mike, Andy, Joe D., Mac, Joey, Bob, Quan, Andy, Paul M., Gary, Pete, Thomas S., Greg, Patrick, Frank A., Mike H., Dr. Ed, Brendan, John S., Peter F, Turner, Sean, Trae, Josh, Joe, Erick, Al, Daniel, Matt, Dave, Bobby, Mark, Iggy, Jim R., Pete Z., Tim, Darrin, Dave, David, Jeff and anyone else I’ve accidentally left off the list of Network 54 board members who have sold me cards or pointed me in the direction of cards. Thanks to you all. You’re all what makes the board the positive place that it is.

hi ed!
glad to help. love those unique collections, like marks signed 1934 goudey set, and pauls signed t206s. I'm going to use this opportunity to plug my signed 1933 goudey set. I currently have about 178 different. many of which came from the help of fellow board members :)

I'm jealous of your collection. :)

Even before I joined this site, I used to follow your website (I think). Didn't you used to own some high-end T206's (Plank) and switched to signed T206's?

Cool story Ed. Well done Sean!

I picked this up from buythatcard on Ebay last night. Can't wait to get it in hand. It's one of the cleanest, sharpest ones I have seen.

http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s393/peterose4hof/Rousch.jpg

I'm thinking of having it graded. Does anyone understand the grading standards for why some strip cards get a numerical grade and some get an authentic? Or is it an impossible algorithm?

Thanks Peter ! I have seen many Mauls in higher grade but with less clarity, focus, etc. - I finally found a good replacement for this one that has been in my collection for awhile.

"Big Thanks to Mr. Tony Arnold!"

Added this Semi~Tuff Walsh to my E90-1 set(in progress!) and as a bonus, he doubles as to my Walsh Collection... Saweet : )

Nice E90-1 Walsh, Denny. Having labored years ago to put this set together I know how extremely tough it is to find a Walsh. Congrats!

Is 1947 pre or post war? Technically, the war was over, but I've always considered post-war to start with the 1948 Leaf & Bowman sets.

Sweet Red Hindu's, I would like to own one at some point. I thought that Kyle got unfairly maligned albeit he probably did overreact so maybe you scored a softer price as a result of the perceived/real misgivings surrounding his hindu offerings

Yeah it's shredded, barely hanging together. :)

These were picked up prior to the heated posts, lots of calls, emails and research of past auctions for prices. It was fun seeing that many Hindus hidden away and learning about his grandfathers collection. Not a single concern, cards fedexed overnight, very happy.

I'm new here (already bought from a few of you). First of all thanks.

Have an opportunity for a June pickup. Have a lead on a PSA 2.5 Mathewson portrait Sweet Cap 150 (can't make out factory #)

Qualifiers: not a NY collector. But, if it's a deal, I'll make it. Any thought on price?

To make this more relevant, received a lot of 4 raw from marcdelpercio, a graded Doolan from npa589, and working out an exciting deal with bbcard1. Thanks to all.
