I have been looking at some cards that where graded by sgc and psa and was scratching my head about the grades. Ive seen some pre war cards that have a grade of a psa 2 or sgc 20 and from the img they look like they are atleast a 3 or 30 or higher and then see some cards and they look like they are beaters and get a psa 3 or sgc 30. I know that a pic can lie and hide a flaw or two but man some times it makes me wonder if they look at the cards they are grading. i'm talking about common pre war cards not rare pre war of cards either. I'm not a profesional grader by no means but any insight would be great thanks.

I notice that too. I've seen PSA 1 cards that have great eye appeal and look nicer. I didn't examine the card closely, so don't know if there was an unseen flaw. But there is a big range in quality with poors. Gives the chance for a collector to buy a better example for the grade.

I'm not a graded card collector, but look at my friend's graded cards.
