View Full Version : Show me how you have your Graig Kreindler painting displayed

Hey guys, I need your help. Last week I received my Johnny Vander Meer painting that I commissioned with Graig. I am currently thinking about the best way to display it in my office.

I was wondering if any of the people on net54 could show me how you display your Kreindler paintings? Did you frame it or leave it unframed?

Also, have you used external custom lighting to highlight your painting?
I'm looking for different ideas. Just curious....

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for your help. :)

Scott, why don't you send Johnny to me and I'll show you how I have it displayed in MY office. :D

Scott

A major consideration in determining whether a painting should be framed is the thickness of the canvas and whether the artist has painted the sides. If the sides haven't been painted, a frame will invariably enhance the painting. If the sides have been painted but the canvas is thin (I would say 3/4" or less), the painting may be enhanced by a frame; in Johnny's case, I think a shadowbox frame would be great if it's on a thin canvas.

For thicker canvases with the sides painted, my preference is to leave them unframed.

As well, the larger the painting, in my view, the better a painting normally looks unframed. However, the decision on framing any painting is of course how you will like the look.

Graig can no doubt add a more considered opinion.

If the following gets me banned, so be it...

Scott, you might be the biggest attention whore I've read on this board, and granted I haven't been here long.

A vast majority of your posts just screams, "Look at me!! Look what I have!! Look what I won!! Look look look look look!!"

Dude, no one gives a shit. I understand what this site is all about, but you just rub me the wrong way. A lot of self aggrandizing bullshit if you ask me. And I know you didn't ask, but I'm offering anyway.

Thanks. And for those who quietly agree with me, you're welcome.

Okay, but how do you really feel...?

Seriously though, I'm pretty sure that speaking your mind won't get you banned, but unnecessarily hostile posts like that sure don't paint you in a positive light.

I don't know what your beef with Scott is, but last time I checked, a sizable percentage of the posts on Net54 are of the "look what I got, what do you guys think of it?" nature. If you don't like those kinds of posts, skip over them and/or start some threads relating to what interests you. Yeesh.

IMHO, Scott is one of the very best contributors here. He frequently helps others, and adds value as much as anyone that posts here. This forum would be far less enjoyable and educational without Scott's contributions and insights.

FWIW, I'd also like to see how others here display their paintings. Whether or not to frame it (and how to frame it) is an interesting and valid concern. A big decision, to say the least... and a great question for those here who have that experience.

I once had a magnificent Andy Jurinko original of Jackie Robinson... and the dilemma over all the potential framing options made my head spin. I ended up selling the painting, as I needed to raise money. But I still remember the agony over whether to frame it, potential costs, and what type of frame would best compliment the painting.

Having met Scott numerous times I gotta say he is one of the most quality people I have met. This is a site for collectors and for the most part collectors are excited by finding a great piece. So I love to see people who are excited about a great item they got or won or bought. Some people get thrills from drugs and alcohol, others like me get them from finding something cool. The funniest part is that Scott has some stuff that he has not even shown on here that is way cooler than the stuff he has shown!

Scott,
As I said before I love the painting. Unless you could find a vintage style frame that compliments the artwork I think you should leave it unframed. If you decide to frame it I would like to see you post a picture of the finished product.

At the risk of being called an attention seeking whore myself I will certainly reconsider posting my own meager pick ups.

Perezfan Mark has absolutely captured where I am at right now in the decision making process. I don't recall ever being challenged by a decision on how to frame a particular piece. This particular time my head is spinning because I want to do a great job of displaying Graig's Vandy painting.

Basically what I'm looking for is framing/ displaying options that perhaps I wouldn't have come up with on my own. A couple of you have already checked in with suggestions (Thanks Max and Mike!), but I'm looking for other input before I pull the trigger.

Thanks again for your suggestions! :)

I agree completely.

I wanted to view this thread because I just opened an office and have been thinking about buying a great piece of artwork. Although I have no particular interest in Vander Meer, the emotion that painting evokes of the era and the men who played the game is almost overwhelming. What a joy it woyld be to go to my office every day and be able to gaze upon something like that. Scott of right should be proud of it. It is a remarkable piece.

On tge subject...anyone know what kind of ballpark price such a piece costs when commisioned?

Tom, if you go on to Graig's website, you can message them and they'll get back to you with the current rate (it depends on size etc) and beware that there's a waiting list (a pretty good one if it's like last year when I inquired).
Hope that helps.

Scott,
Congrats on a beautiful painting.
As many here I too enjoy a Kreindler masterpiece in my home.

I debated the frame to not frame issue when I first got mine as well.
I think there are two parts to the choice. First is the picture itself as Max went into in detail.
The other is where/how you're going to hang it. If it's by itself, then only nature of the picture should really matter. If it is surrounded by other framed works, it might look better matching the surrounding items.

At the time, I did ask Graig about framing. He referred me to Dean(his agent) for a recommendation. I never followed up because the spot it rests in now is only temporary until we finish the basement (hopefully this year)

Currently mine is unframed and looks fantastic. It is hard for me to believe that a frame could make it look any better than it does.

For those interested.

BTW, I just reread that thread. In post 9 Graig addresses the question about framing.

All -

I am very proud to own a few Kreindlers, and not shy about sharing, either.

When I pull these paintings from the shipped boxes, I don't give much thought initially to the frame/not to frame question. My preference, instead, is to hang 'em up somewhere where I know I will see them with some regularity, and then, with the Mrs.'s permission and much due diligence, frame those I decide to frame.

I really don't put much thought into it. Hanging "naked" on the canvas, as they are, suits me just fine. A silver/gold mat/frame on the Mathewson I think helps accentuate those same tones in the jersey. But again, it would look just as good "naked".

Oh, and I never consider anything I post here to be "showing off", but rather, sharing what I own with those that would appreciate it. If you don't appreciate it, then you shouldn't be on this board.

Here are some examples:

(no idea why some of these are showing up rotated..)

Yeah I'd have to say unframed really pops when its on a solid color wall. I have a store bought print on canvas that was meant to be unframed and it does look great on a flat painted wall.

Boy, am I late to the party or what?! Some of you may remember that a couple years ago, I too had a jerk-off, make that a jake-off, much similar to this guy, trash me for the many "show your" threads that I had started, as well as sharing many pieces from my collection. Unfortunately, despite the overwhelming support I received from the board, I've never been able to regain my enthusiasm that I once had and shared.

What does strike me a little odd is, that during the "Live from the Hunts/Ted Williams Auction" thread, Jake posted over 30 times... just on that one thread! And for whatever reason only Jake is aware of, he went back and erased many of them! What gives Jake?

Attention Whore? You have the sack to call Scott an attention whore? Dude. Take a look in the mirror.

You didn't mind all the attention that many of us showered upon you when you showed off with great pride your Ruth/Red Sox Portrait photo you won in Legendary auction. Even going so far as to claim (and I quote) "this is one of the best shots of Ruth in Boston ever" ... Hardly.

Apparently you enjoyed the attention so much so that once you got the photo framed you immediately posted a new scan of it newly framed for all to see and envy. Maybe you were sensitive and we hurt your fragile feelings because nobody gushed with any more "WOW. WHAT A GREAT RUTH PHOTO! YOU ARE SO AWESOME TO HAVE WON IT! WOW JAKE THAT'S SO FRIGGIN AWESOME. CAN YOU PLEASE MAKE A BIGGER SCAN SO I CAN SAVE IT FOR MY SCREEN SAVER? BTW... WHAT A GREAT PHOTO YOU HAVE. YOU'RE SUCH A STUD JAKE. MAN I WISH I HAD THAT PHOTO!"

Jeez... you are some piece of work.

You really picked on the wrong guy in Scott. Nobody, and I mean Nobody brings more to the memorabilia side than Scott Garner. Scott is also not only a friend but one of the finest Gentlemen that I have even known, as evidence to such in how he chose to handle this matter.

Me, on the other hand, I'm an asshole. Always have been. No matter how hard I try not to be, I just can't help myself. At least I know what I am. You, clearly are in the dark. Let me turn on the light for you Jake... You're an asshole.

With warm regards, Jimmy Catanzaro

BTW... I'm just an old disabled man and had to miss the National for the last few years due to not being able to travel. But, the thought of you actually meeting up with my friend Ben (Big Ben as we call him) face to face, sounds just to good to miss! I may have to try and figure out a way to get there... and I'm serious. Those of you who have met Ben, are now nodding their head in agreement. ;)

Hey asshole, I posted that picture of Ruth in a "Show Us Your Legendary Winnings" thread. What would you have liked me to do, Jimmy?? Are you that much of a moron? I'm sure there's nicer Ruth photos of him in Boston, and I'm sure you own them, so post away jerkoff. And as for the framing, I don't like shit hanging around in plastic sleeve, that's my prefence, not to mention that someone asked to see it after it was done. And as far as any compliments I received, Graig I believe was the only one, and I wasn't looking for any. Thank you for keeping tabs though.

Yes, Jimmy I did erase those comments in deference to a discussion I had with David Hunt regading a misunderstanding. I apologized publically and privately to him, and thought it would be the right thing to do to delete those posts. Sorry if that pissed you off.

Well now,.....an old fashioned forum brawl. Except for one F bomb of Jakes which I edited I don't see anything to ban anyone about. I totally disagree with his take on Scott, who I really like as a member and a person (though I don't think we have met) but his opinion is his opinion. I do hope there is less squabbling though. And as far as going fisticuffs over our hobby I truly hope that would never happen. Heck, if I tried to throw a punch I am quite sure I would pull a muscle in the act. The other guy could just watch me squirm. Although last night I did hit the fence in the air with a long ball and got a stand up triple. I guess I have some strength left just not like it used to be. Carry on guys but try to play nicely....and please, no F bombs or crazy stuff. If it goes too far I will lock this thread and if it keeps going then the culprits could be put in a time out......I am sure we can regroup and not have that happen though. Everyone is entitled to voice their opinion, imo. regards

Enjoying this thread and the opinions on framing - have been going back and forth myself on what to do with some paintings, although they are (sadly) not quite as nice as Graig's!

And not that Scott really needs any defending, but add me to the list of folks who think he is a great asset to the forum.

I guess this really gets to the heart of what it means to be a collector. If people collected things that no one else wanted, I guess that would make them hoarders (I think sometimes I might be bordering on that anyway!). I know that in my modest collection, it is always more fun to show or share with someone else who appreciates the beauty/scarcity of any new addition.

To see Scott's pursuit and enjoyment of his targeted collection brings me joy, not envy. There have been posters on this forum who seemed to take great pleasure in trying to make others feel inferior with their collection - I think it's pretty clear to see that Scott is not one of them.

I enjoy reading this thread and i wasn't going to comment, but here's my 2 cents. I am by no means taking sides, but i really enjoy seeing what others have to offer! I see it as a sharing of knowledge, seeing what's out there and what looks good. The more i see and read about the more chances it gives me to explore new avenues to branch out my collection(which is miniscule).
Carry on

Here are the pictures I would want painted if I had the cash (and someday I might!)

This Ty Cobb picture would be perfect cause I would like to have the boy in it substituted for my son and that way i could tell my son that he actually time traveled once! :)
63831

One of my all tiem favorite Baseball photos, This would also be a test for Graig to see how he would paint a painting :)
63837

1888 Pittsburgh Alleghenys, man imagine this one painted by Graig! That grandstand would be out of this world!
63832

A KILLER shot of the 1912 Red Sox warming up!
63833

nuff said bout this one!
63834

a great shot of my favorite team the 1908 Cubs. Graig is working on a similar one of the Yanks

63835

always thought this was a cool shot of Chaplin though Id probably stick to Baseball

Sean,
Wow! All of these are awesome images.
I think the biggest challenge would be to decide which one to have painted by Graig....

I agree Scott! I would probably go with the Cobb if I could convince Graig to paint my son in where the boy is. Thought it would be fun for others to post their dream painting pics :)

Sean,
Of the baseball, I like the Cobb best.
Of all of them, I think the Chaplin would probably be the best showcase of Graig's talents. All the light transitions across his hat, face, hands, etc all from a match, no less, would really allow the magic to shine through.
While not really a Chaplin enthusiast, I can only imagine how great that would look.
Best,
Mark

Let me tell you about the time I was reading a framing discussion and an autograph thread broke out.

Good point Rob. I will refrain from further posting.

Those of you who have met Ben, are now nodding their head in agreement. ;)

Plus 1 ;) I'm only posting for the attention.

I agree. my only problem with the cobb is it lacks the stadium landscape that graig does so well. something really intrigues me about that grandstand in the pittsburgh pic. I should probably start saving now :)

True! But the majority of fans wearing straw hats is pretty neat and makes a great backdrop

That cobb image is wonderful. I cannot stop looking at it. Is it a BAIN? Where did you get that stock image Sean? There are a lot of seemingly strong personalities in that photo..kind of like this thread.

when graig had his contest going I spent hours compiling images online. I like action shots with stadium landscapes and found about fifty photos I'd pay to have painted. I'm pretty sure cobb is a bain photo.its such a strange setup but very unique photo.

Thought I would bump this thread where I was soliciting ideas on how to best display a painting...

The Johnny Vander Meer painting that Graig Kreindler recently painted for me is now officially on my wall.

After giving this much consideration, I opted to use an interesting framing choice to display Vandy. Max Weder (baseballart on net54) provided some great advice on considering using a shadow box frame. Thanks Max! :)

I chose reclaimed old red barnwood as the choice of the actual frame itself.
I felt that the red in the frame would really make the red pinstriping and lettering on his Cincinnati flannel uniform pop. Max's idea about using the shadow box allowed me to slightly lighten the image and not hide the canvas three dimensionality of an original oil painting.

I'm really happy with the end result. I hope you like it as well! :D

Very nice, scott! It adds to the rustic wooden feel of the dugout too. It makes it look like an old painting, in a good way. Nice choice!

Dude,
That looks fantastic. What size is that?
I am so going to have to steal that idea for mine.
I love the not hiding the edges, yet still highlighting the image. I agree with Jarrod, the old material really makes it appear antiquey(I just made up that word).
Did you find the materials and do it yourself?

Now, I have to decide on the right color for mine. I'm thinking blue of the het/pinstripes or green from the dugout. Any recommendations, Scott?

Mark,

Thanks!
Please feel free to borrow my idea. My painting is 20" x 28".
I would tend to agree with your idea about using blue or green as your frame color choice. Your wall color may be a possible factor in your choice as well. I would lean towards the blue, myself, FWIW.

Great presentation, Scott! Like Jarrod commented, it meshes well with the dugout, too.

Mark -- I'd go with the same shade of blue from the hat, personally.

Mark, I would also consider a rustic, off-white aged wood for your frame. Something a little more yellowed than Lou's jersey.

The framing does look great.

I agree... a frame made up of Popsicle Sticks would still work with these great paintings!

Scott:
Excellent choice... looks fantastic!

Mark:
I also like the blue frame idea for your Gehrig. It definitely calls for a darker shade, to match Lou's Cap and Pinstripes.

Great thread!

I agree that this thread has produced some great thoughts about the best way to display a painting. I've definitely learned quite a bit along the way and I hope that others picked up some ideas as well. :)

Given my screen name here, :D I thought that I would chime in and say that you made a nice choice with the frame for your painting. I will not be able to attend the National this year, but I might have to contact Greg about a future commission. Hope you enjoy your painting for years to come.

Thanks Ben! I hope that if you commission Graig to paint one for you at some point, that you enjoy it as much as I am. It's awesome getting to look at it when I sit behind my desk every day.

I must say, the whole painting commission process with Graig was nothing less than fantastic. Graig is obviously a talented guy, but his personality and demeaner made him a true pleasure to work with. I would absolutely recommend him to all. :D

Ben,
Thanks.
I did it myself.
Skit-it website.
Uploaded pic of painting.
Used a photo editor to remove the background from a nice clear sig example I found online. I enhanced the sig a bit so it showed up better. I toyed with different colors, sizes, and angles to put the auto on.
I then designed the front. The pinstripes and number were lifted from an authentic Gehrig jersey. I added the Iron Horse to the bottom.

I am willing to do it for others, but do have time limitations for my work and family.

Best,
Mark
