Time to see some new acquisitions:

I collect fighter-issued promotional photos. I have long wanted an early Cassius Clay piece. Here it is, from January 1964, a month before he would win the title from Liston and 'come out' as a Muslim under the name Muhammad Ali. The letter has the usual tri-fold for a regular envelope and in person you can see where the photo pressed against it. Both letter and picture have the preprinted Cassius Clay on it:

And his opponent:

Also picked up this early Max Schmeling promo:

The tobacco tag shown was used on tobacco plugs sold prior to the Johnson/Jeffries fight!

About 1" in height

Great Johnson. If it's a T206 Honus, it's probably a 4 or 5 LOL! :D

Al,

That was me - sorry.

It looks better than 40s that I have owned - good registration. Hey, but I want to be like you when I grow up and own a Red Sun JJ - fantastic card! How many copies extant; do you know?

Anyone know who got the cdv's in REA? I would be interested in some if anyone wants to sell or trade?

John,

I guess I underbid, but glad that you got it... much, much better than most that I have seen... but had just picked on the JJ Red Sun, so I backed off a bit.

Glad you have it... and do let me know if it needs a new home someday...

Al

My first post over on this side of forum I believe. I dabble in boxing cards from time to time, I believe this is Braddocks first card, correct me if I'm wrong with that. I also just posted about a Dempsey exhibit with a possible signature? on the autograph side of forum if any experts here want to take a look....thanks

I believe it is Braddock's 'rookie' card.

I can't find a decent photo for a good comparison. But the Fleet Champion may be Hippo Burns. He was a trainer and Naval Champion. He would help train, spar with and manage guys like Jack Johnson, Sam Langford and Harry Wills when they made trips to the West Coast.

He could be seen entering the ring with Jack Johnson during the James Jeffries fight.

Last photo is Burns looking through a telescope type device on a naval ship.

I recently picked this up from a board member to add to my Sullivan collection.
