I hope Jamie makes the Rockies, and based on his stat line (2-0 with a 1.00 ERA and seven strikeouts in nine Cactus League innings this spring. Batters are hitting .133 against him), it looks like he might.

Nice article... I chuckled a few times.

From the article, connecting Moyer to Pat Moran:
#33 - According to baseball-reference.com, Moyer has had approximately 600 teammates, including Nolan Ryan...
#35 - Six Degrees of World Champions: Nolan Ryan was a teammate with Bob Friend, who was a teammate with Murry Dickson, who was a teammate with Pepper Martin, who was a teammate with Grover Cleveland Alexander, who was a teammate with Pat Moran, who played for the last Cubs world championship team in 1908.

Hey,

I saw him pitch live at Wrigley in '86, his rookie year and like all Cubs fans I loved him and hated him. He would be great one day and terrible the next. I have followed him over the years and always rooted for him. I was sad when he was traded for freakin' Mitch Williams, though Mitch did some great things, for a year or so, and I was really happy for him when he came into his own in Seattle. I hope he gets to 300 and makes the sportwriters really think about putting him in the hall. At this point, shouldn't there be a lifetime achievement induction for a guy like Moyer? I was 12 years old when Jamie made his MLB debut, now I'm pushing 40 and he is still going. Bless him...

Cheers,

jim

interesting. You can also get there via the 'Dodgers route': Davey Lopes=>Maury Wills=>Carl Furillo=>Billy Herman=>Rogers Horsnsby=>Miller Huggins/Dots Miller/etc.,etc.

This video shows a card from him with Toledo (see a scan lifted from Google images below). No wonder he went down to the minors... he forgot he was a lefty!

You can get from Jamie Moyer to Ty Cobb with only four players in between.

Jamie Moyer played with Lonnie Smith for the 1994 Baltimore Orioles

Lonnie Smith played with Jim Kaat for the 1983 St. Louis Cardinals

Jim Kaat played with Elmer Valo for the 1960 Washington Senators

Elmer Valo played with Al Simmons for the 1940 Philadelphia Athletics

Al Simmons played with Ty Cobb for the 1927 Philadelphia Athletics

If you include Jim Kaat's broadcasting career, most notably as the TV guy for the Yankees during the mid90s-00s, then surely he's called several games pitched by Moyer. So you can bypass Lonnie Smith, and get there with only 3 degrees of separation.

The only one hoping Moyer doesn't win a game this year:
