This is another back that puzzles me. On most lists of backs scarcity, this one is 16th-18th depending on who you talk to, but what kind of premium, if any, does it normally command? I think most people agree that it is the toughest sweet cap back, but how tough is it? It is also only just a couple of spots below the piedmont 350-460 fact 42 back which i know is much tougher. Sometimes these lists just don't make any sense to me....

Kevin,

I can't really reply on how "rare" or scarce it is, I show it as #19 on the list I have and the Piedmont 42 as #12. I never even gave it much thought but since you posted I took a look at my cards and found one on my Hal Chase..:) Not sure I "paid" a premium for it though??

Larry Doyle (Bat) NYA SC 350-460 Fact 25 PSA 4 42.00
Home Run Baker PHA SC 350-460 Fact 25 BVG 1 42.00
Germany Schaefer WAS SC 350-460 Fact 25 SGC 50 41.14
Mike Donlin (Bat) NYN SC 350-460 Fact 25 GAI 4 38.39
Seymour (Portrait) NYN SC 350-460 Fact 25 Raw 12.00

5 out of 566 all purchased in the last 6 years. No premium evident.
6 out of 566 SC 350-460 Fact 42 without Overprint. No premium.
7 out of 566 SC 350-460 Fact 649 Overprint. No premium.

I made no effort to acquire or to avoid these backs. All three would seem statistically equivalent, but probably should command a premium. I have more Sovereigns :D:D:D than these three put together.

Kevin, I don't know how tough they normally are, but I sold a bunch of them back in December, here on the board - they did not bring a premium and were no more popular than the other SC backs I had.

We had a good thread about them years ago if you use the search function. They're not popular, but they're a lot tougher than collectors give them credit for. Many complete sets had none or only one.

I am looking to buy one with a HOFer on the front for my backs collection if anyone has one for sale in the 2-4 range. Extra points for a Young (any pose) of Lajoie (any pose).

Just went through my set and found only three. Tinker (bat on) is among them, but certainly not a 2-4 grade... Trimmed and beautiful...:)

I agree with most all of the posts, so how in the world can it be that high up on the list? Tostoi's, cycles, ab's, and sov 460's all command a decent premium, but this back doesn't seem to, but yet it is ranked closely to the others mentioned. Just does not make sense to me...scarcity should make for a premium imo....

I know what you're saying Kevin, but look at it this way...at what point does the back premium disappear? I mean it has to break at some point in the back run. I haven't had a chance to look at t206resource yet to see where the SC you are talking about falls at, but is the back right after it (#20) a rare or slightly tough back? If it is not, I would say #19 is the common back beginning.

Edited: After looking into the back rankings on T206resource a little closer, it seems that some of the backs sell for a premium due to scarcity and some do because of popularity. Number 24 on the list is Cycle 350, which usually brings in a good premium (at least at the moment it does), but SC 350-460 25 doesn't and it ranks five spots lower! Not sure of this because it's not crazy rare or because people don't care about the back too much due to its "more common" back brothers. T206.org doesn't even give SC 350-460 25 a premium in price...just looks like it's not going to get any love.

Just my two cents

I took a sampling of my records(600 cards) and show that 3% of backs owned had the sc350-460/42 back. Nap was one that I previously owned.

Here's what I have now:

Reulbach no glove
Mcintyre brk/chi
McGraw glove hip

If I figured correctly then it would have a 15 ranking on my list as compared to what I have owned.

I only collect common backs and am at 224 cards... Of the backs that I have 2 or fewer:
SC150-25 - 1
SC150-649OP - 1
SC460-25 - 2
SC460-42 - 2
SC460-42OP - 1

Odd, I never thought they were tough. I have more of them than any other SC 350-460 back.

fact 25 5
fact 30 4
fact 42 2
fact 42op 2

I didn't pay much attention to the factory #s once I had one of each.
I did tend to buy a card if it didn't seem like one I'd seen often, or if it was a nice one for the price.

I wonder if the factory 25s are slightly less common poses but more common with that back?
