OT: Holmes on Homes and Sweet Caporal Cigarettes

I was watching an old episode of Holmes on Homes last night and got a thrill out of watching him tear into a 1920's era home. As he tore out the walls he found cardboard which had been stuffed into the walls as a cheap insulation. All the cardboard was printed with the Sweet Caporal Cigarettes logo. Unfortunately it was just the boxes which once held the cartons or packs of cigarettes. Not nearly as exciting as actually finding cards in the walls of an old home but I enjoyed the hobby connection in any event.

funny, I was thinking you were going to somehow connect the T206 set with the M101-4/5 set :)

there is a M101-4/5 back with a "Holmes to Homes Bread" advertisement, very rare cards.

In the Summer of 1985, I received a call from Bob (owner of a BB card store in south NJ). He was very excited and wanted me to check out some tin plates
that a customer of his found in the rafters of his attic.

There was 7 tin plates with 32 front images on them of the 1954 Bowman set. Each of the tin plates was different, altogether comprising all 224 images of
the complete set. Including the Ted Williams (#66) image.

Apparently, the previous owner of this house was a Bowman printer who used the actual printing plates to patch up leaks in his roof.

I eventually negotiated a deal with Barry Halper who purchased these tin printing plates.

My Dad worked for the Ford plant in Mahwah,NJ from 1958(?) to 1980. In 1978 he brought home uncut sheets of Topps cards that were used as packing material for some car parts. The sheets were printed in 1 direction, then run through the press agian, but turned 180 degrees. Why? No idea. I think he brought home 2 sheets. Being an avid collector but just 15 years old, I thought they were neat. Then I threw them in the garbage.:(:confused:

About two years ago I bought a small lot from a guy who was renovating his bathroom in Philadelphia. When he was removing the wall, he found a couple of T206s wedged in the cracks. The cards are heavily stained and i presume it to be mold/mildew given they were behind bathroom walls. While the cards are in horrible condition, I thought it was a neat story.

Interesting that the three cards were Old Mill Southern Leaguers (Hickman, Hooker, Paige), yet were behind walls in Philadelphia. Gotta wonder about the story behind that. Another T206 mystery we'll never solve...
