View Full Version : Major cards that are a poor likeness of the player

We haven't done this for a while. Some of my favorites:

N28 Anson. No resemblance to the player in the N300 or the N162.
T206 Johnson pitching.
T206 Mathewson portrait. I don't see it. I've seen the photo it probably is based on and it just doesn't capture it.
CJ Jackson. Weak resemblance at best; compare to the photo cards.
33 Goudey Ott especially green background. The red one isn't that great a likeness either, to my eye.
34 Gehrig 61. Compared to the 37, a weak likeness.
38 Goudey Greenberg. I could be wrong, but i don't see it.
52T Mantle. Seriously. Put aside the preconceptions and LOOK at it.

In agreement about that N28 Anson and the 34 goudey gehrig #61. N28 is a great set with great looking lithographs, but that Anson card is horrid compared to the rest in that set.

All Buchner Gold Coins, with the possible exception of Buck Ewing.

The only one I have is the Arlie Latham. It sort of captures him.

Any M.P. & Co. probably takes the cake, though probably does not fit in the OP's stated criterion of being major cards.

Here is a classic one. The ironic thing is that Irv (pictured here) actually does resemble Cy a little bit. If this player were right handed you could almost not know it's not Cy....

I believe lot #1 in the current B&L auction would fit this thread. ... I would also say (most) strip cards, but I'm guessing they're not considered "major."

Yes! All the E-91s! Which in actuality depicts the Campbell's soup kid in various poses rather than the players.

All Buchner Gold Coins, with the possible exception of Buck Ewing.

While many of the Buchners have generic poses, there are some that have a true likeness of the player.

Why do you say it does not resemble him? Did the actual Joe Jackson wear a different shade of lipgloss?

He was probably referring to the fact that Joe, in a real picture, looks like he chewed on rocks his whole life and was hit by a train...but yeah, you could say it's a different shade of lipgloss.

There's a Frank Chance card, I can't remember the series, that shows him from behind with his head turned. I'm a die hard Cubs fan but I don't want a card of Frank Chance's ass:eek:
