go for so much??? http://www.ebay.com/itm/110819384647?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649&autorefresh=true not a "rare" back the pop report may be a little low but not that bad and it has higher graded examples? Just curious...

I have 2 guesses, more facetious than anything...

a) two collectors thought this was a red portrait, and paid a premium thinking it was a rare, orange color variation (obviously not the case).

and

b) Probstein has a following.

:)

(on a serious note, the corners are quite nice for and SGC graded EX 5, but still that is a high price)

I have no idea why this card went this high, but it could be that a few people needed this card, at this grade for their collection, registry, etc., and a bidding war ensued. What other explanation could their be if a different variation isn't present?

I was one of the underbidders on that card. I got out at $111.00 which I thought was about right for the card. I will say that this card doesn't seem to come up too often in SGC50 or better.

I think there are a few people trying to put the set together in SGC60 or better that have been fairly active recently.

Just a bidding war on a mildly rare common in SGC60.

I was watching that one and was willing to go to around $120 considering the difficulty in finding that card in a decent grade but walked away when it jumped past there. I was not surprised when it hit $150. $200 was a stretch. $271? Sometimes you really want to fill that hole. Tenney was my last "common".

Way overpriced. Color could be the only reason I see. If slight color variations are going to bring this kind of money the value of my collection just doubled.

I finally found one last year at the "National"
"I had to have it"..... Care to guess what I paid?

:D:D If you "had to have it" it's worth every penny you paid ;) At least that's how I see it :)

There isn't anything unusual about the color. Besides, as the Jennings example showed us the other day, you can't really trust ebay photos - sometimes they are bad and sometimes the seller has hit the 'enhance' button.

I was watching a few of Probstein's cards yesterday, including this one because I thought I could get it for around $120, and they all sold for much more than they should have. 'Why?' is anyone's guess.

Tenney isn't so easy to find with good color and registration. Maybe a couple of collectors got tired of waiting for one.

I think for the most part color variations are fairly common, and don't drive up the price that much. I have many and the only one that i have in which i have not seen another is my sgc 84 kid elberfeld.
