1938 goudey question

I am about to embark on collecting 1938 R323 Goudey HOFer cards, drawings version only, in lower condition. VCP has hardly any data on the past sales of these, plus I have a hard time finding them. Are these cards really rare? Are they any more rare than 33-34 Goudey cards?

I think "rare" is somewhat relative and in this case I believe the 38s are tougher to find than the 34s. 34s are also easier and much more plentiful on ebay in .99 auction format than the 38s. All the 38s will pop up eventually but its also a 48 and in your case much smaller "set" than the 96 in 34. I believe the 38s with cartoons/drawings next to them tend to be a tad tougher as well.

I love the '38 Goudey set and have been collecting it for about 8 years. I'm just one Dimaggio away from completion in VG-EX grade and have enough lower grade extras to almost complete a second set. My experience is that they are definitely not as common as the 33-34 sets......33's are like t206s in availability, IMO. I can't tell you how many times I've been to the Sun Times show in Chicago and asked every dealer if they had any '38 Goudeys and the answer is almost always 'no...I don't get those very often'. I've picked up a couple cards at those shows, but I've had better luck on Ebay over the years. I just don't think a large volume was printed back in the day. It's a cool set, have fun with it.

These are great responses and these were theories that I had that you guys pretty much confirmed. It is a great set and I can no longer resist, the Dimaggio is the most expensive, I will be seeking one that is AUTH-Poor condition. Matt are any of those extras for sale possibly?:D

In terms of relative scarcity, you can get a feel for it by checking out the PSA pop report...I would caution against using this too precisely, but it can give you an idea.

Take Foxx as an example. PSA counts grading 450 of his '33 Goudey #29. PSA counts grading 146 of his '38 Goudey #249.

So if you figure about 1/3 as many '38 as '33 you might be somewhere close.

I want all three of those. I have the Doerr in VG without the cartoons, I would actually trade someone a Good condition one with cartoons for my VG one without cartoons
