Linking with my 1973 Topps Staub post, how about showing cards of a player who has a star showing in the background. Brett75 told us of the 1970 Jake Gibbs with Munson in the background. And Bobsbbcards posted the scan. Isn't there a 1973 Topps with Mays in the background?

1971 Topps Bud Harrelson has Nolan Ryan on it in the foreground.

1986 Topps Eric Davis has Tony Perez high-fiving Davis at home plate.

1977 Topps Carlton Fisk has Willie Randolph (I think) sliding in.

1962 Topps Superstars (Mantle and Mays) has Hank Aaron in the background (taken at the AS Game at Fenway Park in 1961).

The classic would be the '56 Topps Aaron with Mays sliding home in the background

MilBraves-I agree. That is my favorite. I mentioned that one in my 1973 Topps Staub post. What do you know of the 1956 Topps Mantle background? Is that Mantle, or someone else?

...and who is mysterious ghost person behind Mantle in his Topps 1957 card that Topps tried so hard to obliterate but never quite did.

Not 100% sure....but I have always wondered if this was Munson catching on the 72 Yaz In Action card??? I can't see enough facial hair or sideburns to determine if it is or not! LOL!

It's Mantle. Here's the original photo -- can't remember who posted this in the past, but I saved it on my PC. Coincidentally, a question about this card came up on the PSA forum, which made me dig this photo up. Here's the original.... they did modify the card to put the ball in Mick's glove, I believe.

Yep. "The Great One" in his Rookie Campaign as he went up extremely high to take away certain extra bases from Brooklyn great PeeWee Resse in the summer of '55 at Ebbets Field. Still one of my favorite photos.

By the way. If you look closely at the 1956 Mantle card you can see the dividing line where Topps spliced the picture to make it wide enough to fit the card. Look closely at the man on the left edge leaning in with the white shirt and black stripe across his chest. He is also leaning right behind the left ear on Mantle of the big picture. Don't have the card anymore but maybe someone could post an example so you can see it.

Never mind Pete... I always found it hilarious how Chris Short's legs perfectly frame the picture of the dog in the "Alpo" ad on that card. To this day, when I think of Chris Short the first thing that comes to my mind is Alpo. (And I don't even have a dog!)

CW and Almostdone-thanks for the '56 Mantle posting. I used to think it was not Mantle. But what it originally was "not a catch". So Topps put the ball in he glove. First time I have heard about the cropping. Makes the 3 guys to the left of Mantle's big hat appear to be oblivious to the action. Nice.

mintacular-yup this turned out to be a nice thread. Still looking for Mays in the background of a 1973(?) Topps taken during batting practice. I love the pictures going up of the original photos that were 1956 backgrounds. Shall I start a new thread? Yes.

Theer were some cards in the 1956 set that used the same photo for two different players. I forget exactly which, but there's a photo of a first baseman lunging for a wide throw around a runner.

That same picture is apparently depicting both the firstbaseman and the runner.

I know this isn't actually vintage but how about the 1983 Topps Rickey Henderson Highlight Card #2......Cal Ripken in background-a-sneaking up behind him......early card of Ripken

I always thought Jackie Robinson was in the background of the 57 Topps Turk Lown card. What do ya'all think?

The 1971 Dell Stamp Dave Cash shows Bill Mazeroski in the background.

Easier to spot are Willie Stargell on the 1973 Topps Bobby Bonds and Dave Parker on the 1978 Topps Felix Millan.

Sorry, no scans today!

Yeah, cap emblem is fuzzy, but the player is wearing pin stripes and all-black socks, so must be Howard, the
catcher on the AL squad.

coached for the Dodgers in '57. He retired from playing after the '56 season because they were planning to trade him across town to the Giants. Always seemed strange to me that O'Malley wouldn't give him one or two seasons in L.A., his home town, before he retired. Or, did Robby announce his retirement just before the move was made public?

Just occurred to me that the photo is from an earlier year, as Lown is in a road uni and the Dodger coach in home white, so the background must be Ebbetts Field. But the Dodger in question appears to be standing in the thirdbase coaching box as Lown warms up on the sideline. Hmmn, I thought Ebbetts had a bullpen. Maybe he was just striking a pose for the Topps photog. Sorry for hijacking this into an altogether different issue.

you mean the player behind Byrne's glove arm, right? Not the one behind his throwing arm, as that guy looks way too lanky and stooped in the shoulders to be Mantle. The other player might be the Mick - based on what? No part of the uni number is visible, and nothing about the physique seems to scream Mantle, so I wonder what Bob is basing his speculation on?

The runner in both of the above is Richie Ashburn of the Phillies' Also, Ashburn is sliding into second base on Johnny Temple's 1956 Topps card #212

I've always thought that the background picture of the 1956 Sandy Amoros card was of Jackie Robinson stealing home in the 1955 World Series.
