View Full Version : Cards that might have been...

While looking through my 1964 Topps Giants set I realized for the first time that neither Maris nor Drysdale appear in the set and it got me to thinking of cards that would have looked good that the company's either never printed or players retired prior to reaching that particular year. I really would have loved to see a 1975 Topps mini Roberto Clemente that coming from the first set I collected as a kid. Anyone else with cards that they would have liked to have seen or might have been ?

Heck, I'm still looking for a 1962 Topps Stamp of Roy Sievers listed with the A's and a 1969 Kahn's Ron Santo with red stripes :).

That's a good one. I think there is a 1977 Topps proof card of Jerry Grote but Topps pulled it before production because Grote had said that he was going to retire before the 1977 season but later changed his mind.

The top 4 cards were made by Topps in 2011 as a part of their Lost Cards insert set. The '41 Goudey Musial and '69 Topps Simmons were custom made for me by a guy on the Coll. Universe board who also had made the '53 and '64 Topps earlier.

The gentlemen from the Coll. Universe board (id: heritageaddict) also made the '52 Topps Musial card with the "cut auto" from my 3x5.

These I printed off of a website of a guy who made some masterful looking "what if" cards. I wish I culd remember the site, there were a number of great looking cards there.

That's as cool as the other side of the pillow! Do you have any copies of that card actually made up and possibly for sale, and do you make requests?

bobw

I do not have any already made up but it can be done, however it does not have any back design. I also do requests if I have a photo or if you can provide a photo. Private Message me a list of players, the teams and years and I'll see what I can do and let you know a price.

Funny how the internet works... those are designs that I have done over the years. Three of those were offset printed and handed out as promos at card shows so who knows how they got around. The '54 Mantle was just a prototype I posted on CU a long time ago that I've since improved.

I have a library of dozens of these that I've done. Got to start me a blog like Bob Lemke (the master of ersatz cards) has done.

Rocky had a good season for Kansas City in 1964. If the Yankees had brought him up from their top farm team that year, he and Maris could have posed for a 1965 Topps card titled, "Yanks Outfield Bashers," or some such. That would have been a great item for us Indians fans to collect.

I never understood why my favorite player at the time, Rusty Staub wasn't in the 1972 or 1973 Topps sets. I would have loved to see him and Willie Mays in the '72 Topps Traded sub-series as well.
1956 and 1957 Topps Stan Musial;
It seemed like there was plenty of time to issue a "In Memorium" card for Roberto in the 73 high number series (like they did with Hubbs in 64).
Considering that he was the #2 pick in the 66 draft and did play late in '67, I always wondered how Topps could not make a Rookie Stars card with Reggie Jackson on it in '68 (especially considering the scrubs they did include over him).
