Links to the past.............

Jack Quinn and Bobby Doerr were teammates on the 1934 PCL Hollywood Stars. Quinn was 51, Doerr 16. Quite a link to the past. Are there any other players alive today that could make such a claim, a similar linkage, to the past? (Doerr will be 94 April 7th)***********************************

Doerr is one of just five living players who played in the majors during the 1930's. Looking through them, I couldn't find anything near the connection you did but if you saw the Eddie Moore/Hank Greenberg thread started the other day, Moore played with the Spartanburg Spartans of the South Atlantic League in 1938 at the age of 39 and one of his teammates was Mike Palagyi who played for the 1939 Washington Senators and is currently the 13th oldest living former player at age 94

1965 Cardinals had Barney Schultz, who was a teammate of Ray Narleski in 1944 with Wilmington, who was a teammate with Jim Curry in 1921 and Jim Curry played with the 1909 Philadelphia A's.

or, Carlton's manager was Red Scoendienst, who debuted as a player in 1945. One of Red's teammates in '45 was Debs Garms who payed on the 1934 Browns with a 58 year old Chaley O'Leary, who debuted in 1904 with the Tigers.

Mark Buehrle(amongst other current players) played with Harold Baines for the White Sox in 2001, who played with Minnie Minoso for the White Sox in 1980, who played with Al Benton for the Indians in 1949, who played for Connie Mack with the A's in 1934, who made his debut in 1886.

Or we can look at this in reverse order. Connie Mack debuted in 1886, managed Nellie Fox in 1949, who played with Joe Morgan in 1964, who played with Chili Davis in 1982, who played for the 1999 Yankees with a bunch of current players.

It could also take another route in '64, Fox and Morgan also played with Staub who played with Strawberry for the Mets as late as '85, who also played on the '99 Yankees.

Here we go. Julio Franco who played as late as 2007, played in 1982 for the Phillies with Tug McGraw, who was managed by Stengel for the Mets in 1965, who made his debut in 1912 playing for Bill Dahlen, who played his first game in 1891 for Anson, who debuted in 1871.

I believe the aforementioned Al Benton was the only man to surrender a home run to both Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle. I think.

I posted this awhile back, but I had a line of 10 players with the last one being Roger Clemens, that went from 1871-2007. You could add whatever teammate to Clemens to keep it going but here is the original picture I posted here. I was only using cards I owned and since I don't really collect cards from the 20's-50's there weren't many choices in my collection so you could probably do it with less players.

Thanks for your interesting responses. It's still amazing to me to think that Bobby Doerr, 94 in April, played with and against the likes of Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Joe DiMaggio (they both retired after the 1951 season, Doerr due to a bad back at the young age of 33), Ted Williams (Doerr actually preceded Williams as a Red Sox by 2 years), Lefty Grove, Bob Feller (Feller rookie 1936; Doerr rookie 1937)), and many other HOFer's of a bygone era..........and many players that had direct linkage to the early 20th/late 19th century. Amazing..................
