I have wanted to start a collection of 1933 Goudey baseball for quite some time. I have always loved the artwork, colors and player selection. I am thinking of going after a SGC 40 or SGC 50 set. Besides the obivious big cards any hurdles to know about, SP's, tougher commons, etc. I know this is one of the easier sets to find, just checking on any surprises. Also if anyone wants to post some pics of their favorites, always love to see some good ones. Thanks Ralph

I'm not building the set, but I have picked up a few HOFers here and there. I love the cards for the same reasons quoted above. They look great in the SGC holders with the black gaskets. Here are the 5 that I own.

You might want to ask Rob Miller (robextend) as I know that he is only a few cards away from finishing his set.

That's the set I started. I think I'm down to about 100 with most of those being commons. I'm guilty of not spending much time or money on it the past couple of years....just busy busy busy with life, wife, kids. haha

When I started it I picked up the Ruths/Gehrigs/LaJoie in the beginning or close to it. My logic at that point was that the prices for them would likely do nothing but climb higher and higher.

I'm doing my set in all PSA4 except for the Ruths and Lajoie which are too cost prohibitive for me. I have the Ruths all in 2 and Lajoie in 3.

I've found that when I first started the set that they were abundant on Ebay , auction style. Now there are usually very few of them available via true auction.

I really need to get back on this set! Here is a link to some of the ones I have pics of.

I have found it harder to attain many of the Hofers in the 33 and 34 sets compared to the T206's. They have become very tough to acquire via auction as of late. They seem to be drying up a bit. Great set, but gets frustrating sometimes because of the cards being tough to come by. Also the resale is not so great as compared with the strong market for T206.

I'm in agreement that it's an amazing set. I'd love to get to work on it. Unfortunately, I already outspend my collecting budget on 206 HOFers and Vintage Basketball.

Awesome cards Goose. I think that Iron Horse is one of the most basic yet attractive cards in the hobby.

I agree. Most of the Goudeys that I have seen in recent auctions are lower grades. I am in the "kind of putting a set together stage", but mainly concentrating on HOF'ers. I chased the 33 Goudey Lazzeri card for a long time before winning an auction on that card last summer.

It's the only one I own, but one of my favorite cards. I remeber seeing old photos of his follow through and the card captures it perfectly.

I also took the plunge into the 33G set, started about a year ago... Im low grade all the way ( G F P ), I also need a ton of commons( apporx 100+), I actually find the stars/HOFers more readlly avail. then many commons. The lesser name HOFers ( Ripely,Manush,Ferrell,Cronin) can be had for under 40, the name HOFers ( Hornsby,Hubbell,Ott,Foxx,etc)..always seem to be in the 50-75 range. and the big two ( Ruth/Gehrig)..well..I dont worry about those yet...if I get that far..I could live with a reprint in that spot for a while.

PS - if anyone has any extra avail for trade, let me know...I have a handful incl HOFers, and a load of other 30s cards incld HOFers..all lower grade

Here are 3 of my favorites from my favorite set of all time. I also love the #92 Gehrig but I don't have that one. The #92 is a darker blue than the #160. I became a fan of this Goose Goslin card after listening to The Glory of Their Times CD.

Sorry for the odd sized scans.

Hey Ralph! As David mentioned I am close to completing the set (15 cards away), however that does include Lajoie, 4 Ruths, 1 Gehrig, Dean and some other HOFers.

My set falls between SGC 50-SGC 80. I have been upgrading some of my remaining SGC40s when I can. I feel that is the range that is the most presentable, yet least expensive. I try to get them pre-graded, Joe's Vintage has been a good source for me.

To be honest I really haven't come across any surprises. For some reason it took me forever to acquire a Tommy Thevenow (#36) but mainly because I didn't wanna go out of my fixed price range, and that card always seemed to creep right out of my range.

You can see my collection here: http://imageevent.com/vanslykefan/prewar1/1933goudey?n=0&z=2&c=4&x=0&m=24&w=0&p=0

Let me know if you have any questions, it's an awesome set and a lot of fun to collect.

Guys, Thanks for all the info and help. All the cards look AWESOME. These are truly some of the most beatiful cards. I think SGC 50 maybe the way to go, cards really pop with the black inserts. Althought all the grades looked great, I may well end up with the Big Boys in SGC 30, till money permits... I know this is a rookie question, but what is the difference with the ones without, the BIG LEAGUE CHEWING GUM in red banner? Were they produced later in the design run or is it just to be different.... Thanks again, look forward to seeing some more, and showing some off soon!!! Ralph

Ralph - the 1933 Goudey set is one of the greatest. Have fun putting it together!

In case you are interested in assembling a master set, there are two variations that I know of: #6 Jimmy Dykes - there are two versions, one that lists his age as 26 and one that list his age as 36; and #47 Heinie Manush - there are two versions, one with a fence in the background and one without. Does anyone know of any other variations?

Keith, I didn't know these existed, I am a pure newbie in this set. Does either one of those variations add a premium? Any others out there to be on the lookout for? Thx guys!!!

Here's an interesting article (http://www.psacard.com/articles/article_view.chtml?artid=4775&type=1) about the set, Ralph.

Ralph - I'm not aware of either variation carrying a premium, but I'll defer to the '33 Goudey experts for a definitive answer.
