Ok, I know this thread will get some chuckles,,, what can I say?
Considering the Mets are probably favored to finish last in the NL East, let us at least enjoy some of their memorabilia.
Let's see what you got.
Some of the items I post have been seen in other threads.
The first one is a cardboard 7UP-1962 sked advertising piece that is a little too big for my scanner followed by 1986 full tickets to Gm. 6WS, yay Buckner, and Gm 6 NLCS, yay to not facing Mike Scott, cardboard Mets logo with a few autographs and a full ticket to Gm 1, 1962, the Mets home opener in their first season.

Hi Richard,

OK, I'll play! Some of you may know that I am an advanced Nolan Ryan collector. Here is a look at some of the items in my Ryan Mets era showcase. I love the Mets stuff! :D

Some of the standout items that you can see are:

- A game used Ryan spike from 1971. This originated from long-time Mets fan Paul Hill's personal collection. Hill collected one game used item from every player that he came in contact with. This was his Nolan Ryan Mets piece.

- A game used ball from 7/1/69 at ST. Louis. Background info: HOF'ers Steve Carlton and Nolan Ryan (All-time right handed and left handed strikeout pitchers when they retired) face each other for the 1st time. Steve Carlton came out on top in their 1st match up. This ball was given to Steve after the game by a long time trainer and clubhouse man of the ST.Louis Cardinals. This originates from Steve Carlton's personal collection.

_ Tickets to Nolan's 1st career strikeout (1st 3 of 5,714 K's), 1st win of 324, last Mets win, only World Series appearance and win

- An official NL ball signed by Ryan in his Rookie Season in 1968

-Original 1968 snapshot of a babyfaced Nolan Ryan signing autographs out in front of Shea in 1968.

- Many other items. PLMK if you have any questions about anything that you see or if there is an item that you would like me to share with the group.

Enjoy!

My son and I still love to talk about the game. Neither of us realized what had happened to end the game in the 15th inning. Mets only needed a fly ball from Ventura to win the game. We saw the ball take off and immediately knew it was enough to win the game. We turned to each other and started to high five, hug, shout, jump and enjoy the moment, but we never saw the ball go over the fence :).
My son still loves to bring up the fact that what makes a game like that one so great is the fact that a team will fall behind first before staging their rally. The Braves scored one in the top of the 15th and the Mets scored two in the bottom of the inning.

The original schedule has the Cards visiting the Mets for a night game on Friday, Aug 17 (the night that your stub is from), and day game on the 18th.

They ended up playing a doubleheader on the 18th, so I'm thinking the Friday night game got rained out before it started, and played the next day.

I haven't checked my 1962 TSNs for any sort of write up about details of what happened.

Some Tom Seaver stuff from 1967 Mets publications for your amusement... first, a few scans from a 1967 Mets program (sold and scored during the 6/14/67 game)...

http://farm2.staticflickr.com/1431/5097937015_64058d0661_b.jpg

And now, from the 1967 Mets yearbook, Tom Seaver's bio...

http://farm2.staticflickr.com/1063/5116311699_e73086a177_b.jpg

Tom Seaver making a guest appearance on Bill Denehy's page, along with Don Shaw, as spearheaders of the 1967 youth movement...

http://farm2.staticflickr.com/1122/5116907590_6f809f5f6a_b.jpg

Did you guess that Bill Denehy was the Seaver tie-in from page 30 of the '67 Mets program? But Seaver's appearance on Denehy's page was not the only place where the two appeared together... chew on that for a few minutes, while we present a final, non-"Franchise" delicacy from the 1967 Mets yearbook...

Page 9 - Wes Westrum's bio, including a photo of the manager with "prodigy" Nolan Ryan...

And for those of you who may not have figured out the other Seaver-Denehy connection, Bill Denehy was "the other guy" on Tom Seaver's 1967 Topps rookie card...

Here are a bunch from '69, including a few I actually got within the past week. The one blue pennant is really strange ... originally it was made to say Eastern Division Champs but apparantly the pennant company wanted to better utilize what was leftover after the series and painted over it with what looks like part of an orange crown. It is really heavy paint, clearly done at the factory.

Yeah... she's pretty hot ;)

Keep an eye out on ebay... she tends to turn up maybe twice a year (either with or without Mr. Met). Also, Inside the Park Collectibles seems to get these about once a year. VERY tough to find her with the original Pennant (it is usually missing or a repro).

Nice Greg!!

Never seen that one before. Could you possibly post a better close-up of just that "orange crown" pennant? Also (at the risk of hijacking this thread)I'd love to see a better shot of the Boston Braves Pennant in the background.

Thanks

thetahat
01-16-2012, 05:41 PM
Hi Mark ... surely ... you can see the "Eastern Division" print from the back of the pennant, and even from the front if you look at it from an angle you can see the outline of the letters under the orange. The Braves pennant is an interesting one, it doesn't fit a pattern that I've seen from other teams. (You know what I mean, most pennants fit a set design with similar print, logos, etc.) This one is fullsize with very thick tassels (tucked behind).

perezfan
01-16-2012, 07:36 PM
Very cool. Greg...

Never seen either of those before. That Braves Pennant is a killer. I wonder what the story is behind that one? We'll never know, of course, but it's a "keeper" nonetheless.

Thanks for posting those,
Mark

Sorry the image is so small, but here's a 1961 Casey Stengel check made out to "Essex House" with "NY Expenses NY Mets" written in the corner. What makes this check particularly significant is that it was written October 12, 1961, two days after the expansion draft in which the players who would comprise the inaugural 1962 Mets were selected. Unfortunately, the bank cancellation holes go through the words "NY Mets," but that doesn't take away from this check's historical value.

Here's a good one. Yesterday, there was a "50 Years of Amazin' Baseball" autograph event which took place inside the Ceasars Club at Citi Field. The Mets were selling some of their memorabilia at the event, and they had game-used baseballs for $20 apiece, or $25 if they were from Citi Field’s first season. I don't know what unattributed game-used baseballs are "worth" in the regular collectors' market, but during the season I've seen them for sale in the Mets' Amazin' Memorabilia stand for higher prices, and considering that the Mets ask $30 for brand new NON-used official MLB baseballs in their team stores (yes, I know you can get them elsewhere for much less), I decided this wasn't such a bad deal, and I went ahead and bought the two Citi Field Inaugural Season balls shown in the photo below.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7148/6746714449_7594d2c584_b.jpg

(Yes, this is how they were presented. Loose in the basket, pick through 'em and take the one(s) you want. And yes, I did move the baseballs around so that the two Inaugural Season baseballs were prominent in the photo.)

When I got home, I looked up the provenance of the baseballs on the MLB Authentication website. According to MLB, the Citi Field logo ball in the middle of the tray, the right one of the pair, was used in the first “Subway Series” game played at Citi Field - June 26, 2009.

And the other ball, the one to its left, was used in an even more historic game. This ball, it turns out, was used in the August 23, 2009 game against the Phillies - the game that ended on an unassisted triple play, only the second time in the entire history of Major League Baseball that a game ended that way. This specific ball was not, of course, THE ball that was used in the play - in fact, it was used rather early in the game (“O. PEREZ THROWN TO S. VICTORINO, BALL IN DIRT,1ST INNING,” according to MLB) - but it was still used in that game.

Considering that the Mets have asked $500 for baseballs used in the final game at Shea Stadium, I’d say at $25 apiece, I got a pretty good deal.

Here are Zach Wheat Mets Old Timers Day gifts from 1962-1965. The platter is very hard to get a good picture of. Actually the 1964 is the Dedication of Shea Stadium.

OK so this is a very rare Mets item.
It's a 1977 game program. It was acquired and scored at the game by a much younger version of me. I was present at the game with my father.
Something very memorable happened. What is it?
I'll give the answer in a few posts to allow for some responses from the audience. :D

Wow, after looking the program over, it really hits home how bad they were then. Any team that has to have Bruce Boisclair batting clean up is in deep do-do.

Mark,
I'll take a swing at this. This game was suspended due to an extended blackout. It's certainly got to be a rare event, no?

You are correct, Scott.
This game was played on July 13, 1977. Ray Burris vs Jerry Koosman.
It was around 9:30 pm with Lenny Randle batting. The stadium went dark. You could see a little out the back that the whole area was dark, but nobody knew it was the whole of NYC that had lost power.
It was kind of surreal. For a while, everyone waited, figuring it was temporary. No one panicked. The organist, Jane Jarvis, played music. In a bit, a couple of cars were brought on to the field through the outfield fence. The headlights were put on to light up the field and a few players came out to run around and entertain us. I don't know who they were as we couldn't see them all that well.
A bit later, the news filtered in that the whole of NYC was blacked out. Most people hurried to their cars to get out of there. My dad drove home without any highway or street lights. There was lots of mayhem.

The blackout lasted until the next day. Power returned one area at a time starting around 7am. By 10:40 the power had been restored to the entire city. Unfortunately, this blackout was marked by extreme vandalism and theft.

The first part I can remember just as it was yesterday.
The last bit I got from Wikipedia's page about the blackout.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City_blackout_of_1977

I was at my Mom's house yesterday helping clean out some stuff from my childhood room. I found this and a whole bunch of other stuff, most of which brought back great memories of being a kid and spending time with my Dad. Pretty cool!

Edit: I just noticed I made a scoring mistake. I forgot to credit the Mets with a run in the bottom of the 5th on Mike Vail's HR. They were losing 2-1 at the time of the blackout.

For me it wasn't particularly scary. It was actually kind of cool, like a great adventure. My family moved to northern NJ in Dec 1976, so we drove directly out of NY. NJ power was not affected, so when we got home, we watched the news. I don't remember the details of which channels were on, etc. All I remember about the aftermath were the news reports of all the looting, fires and general destruction that went on. I'm not too sure most were worried about the Son of Sam at that particular moment.
I can't believe I actually saved the program. I wasn't into collecting at the time and probably just put in a pile of stuff which then got buried.

I read Koosman had 11Ks at the time the lights went out at Shea.
Could've been a big night for him!

I forgot I had this item.

A number of years ago I purchased a collection from a man who used to write to the teams and players in the early '60's. He was about 12 years old at the time and would always request autographs and photos but usually he would only get team issued pamphlets and flyers regarding merchandise the teams were selling. Many times the flyers were nothing more than mimeographed pages sent to them with a price list. I was going through some of this stuff tonight as I am preparing to sell much of it and found this price list from the Mets. Judging by the fact that their address was the Polo Grounds, I can only assume this was from 1962 or '63. A good majority of the other items this man had in his small collection are from mainly '62 so I can only assume this must be from the same year.

Its kinda cool to look back and see what they are selling and for the prices the souvenirs were selling at.

To add some more modern Mets history to this thread, here is an early career Reyes GU helmet (which I am open to selling) and an incredible Reyes bat that is just demolished by use. I photo matched it to a whole series of games over 2 weeks in 2008.

This has to be from 1962 because at the bottom it offers additional copies of the '62 yearbook.

Not nearly as Amazin' as most of the other items shown in this thread, but what do you expect from a YankeeFan? :)

Press photo from first day of Spring Training, 1962.

This is my favorite Mets item in my collection. I have some regrets about selling my 1962 Game 1 stubs and 1969 signed team photo.

Here's my latest acquisition... a check from Casey Stengel to the Mets' ballboy (batboy?), dated September 23, 1962...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8321/8005002117_5ccc676a63_b.jpg

9/23/62 was the final home game of the season, and at the time it was thought to be the last game ever at the Polo Grounds, with the Mets expected to move into Flushing Meadows Stadium the following season.

Presumably the check was an end-of-season gratuity, and it's interesting to note that the "Ol' Perfesser" misspelled the young man's name, as seen by the endorsement signature on the back.

I suppose at the beginning of the season I would have signed for a Santana no-hitter and complete irrelevancy otherwise, but after the break they've been almost unwatchable.

Here is a vintage signed 8 x 10 Mets team photo of a fresh faced Nolan Ryan at the beginning of his career.

Boy, I wish my name was Mike, but I love the fact that it's signed!
I've had this in my personal collection for quite a number of years.

I don't own this, but I saw it for sale in the Mets Team Store at Citi Field. They had a 2009 Sean Green team-issued jersey, price $200... but this is no ordinary team-issued jersey - this is a shirt with a story. First, take a look at the jersey...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8177/8040328163_61db9b5183_b.jpg

To me, a "team issued" jersey falls in a grey area. It's possible for a team to "issue" as many jerseys as they want to a player, knowing full well that the player is never going to wear it in a game, but the team can still say "maybe he didn't wear it, but we did issue it to him, it did hang in his locker," and charge Collector's prices for it. I consider myself knowledgeable about memorabilia, but I make no claims to being an expert, and I have no idea how those of you Net 54 people who are active in the world of uniforms feel about "team issued" jerseys, so take my comments with however many grains of salt as you wish.

That having been said, this jersey attracted my attention because of the Inaugural Season patch. You don't see too many of those anymore on the game-used racks at Citi Field. So I took a picture, and noted the MLB hologram number (LH439627) so I could research it later. Unfortunately, the MLB authentication site was no help, because it only identified the shirt as "NEW YORK METS HOME WHITE JERSEY," authentication session date 10/15/10. A quick check of an all-time numerical Mets roster showed that nobody named "Green" wore #48 in 2009.

However, a little Internet digging unearthed an article from the New York Daily News, 3/31/09 (link (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/sean-green-loses-number-48-aaron-heilman-wore-article-1.361574)), which included this interesting factoid...

Reliever Sean Green was assigned No. 48 by the Mets after arriving in a trade from the Mariners, since his former No. 54 was already worn by bullpen catcher Dave Racaniello. But Green has learned that Aaron Heilman wore No. 48 as a Met. So [he] resolved to swap his number for anything else by Opening Day, rather than place an added bull's-eye on his back with comparisons to Heilman if he has any early struggles.

Sean Green wore #50 during the 2009 season. #48 went to Pat Misch.

I guess you'd have to consider me a Matt Harvey fan. I go to most of his home starts, and I have a transcript of WFAN broadcaster Howie Rose's call of his very first pitch in the majors. But even *I* have to say this is ridiculous!

At the MLB All-Star Fanfest last month, in the Authenticated Game-Used Memorabilia section of the MLB Clubhouse Store, they were asking $1,000 for this game-used baseball from Matt Harvey's Major League Debut.

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3725/9379437257_fd6b1ef6f7_c.jpg

But wait, there's more!

At the Amazin' Memorabilia kiosk at Citi Field on July 21, they had game-used baseballs from the Home Run Derby, attributed as to player and out. There was also a Matt Harvey autographed baseball, but I didn't think much of it at the time - the Home Run Derby balls were the star of this shot.

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3828/9508395520_d43282096b_c.jpg

It wasn't until later that I noticed the label on the Harvey ball's cube, indicating that the ball was from his Major League Debut. So the next time I went to a game I went to the kiosk, and since the ball was no longer on display - I don't know if it was sold, or just in storage - I showed them the picture, which was still in my camera, and asked how much they were asking for it.

$2,000.

That's right.

Two thousand dollars.

'Nuff said.
