View Full Version : 2012 NFL Football Pool

We haven't gotten very much response about doing a football pool this year, but I thought I would start one here and see who wants to play. Tim Cathey has run it the past two seasons, and I will still defer to him if he wants to do it again this year. If not, I can keep track of the weekly standings. Here are a few rules to start:

Let's have each round be worth a little more than the previous one, as we did in the past:

Wild card- 1 point for each correct pick
Conference semi-finals- 2 points
Conference finals- 3 points
Superbowl- 5 points.

Let's get all picks in at least one hour before first kickoff. So for this week, noon Saturday is the deadline. Let's also say no edits allowed, unless they were allowed in past years.

And if we can get at least 5 or more players, there will be a prize for the winner. Leon will donate a deluxe Net54 T-shirt to the winner.

So just post in this area, and unless I hear from Tim I will keep track of the point totals and post the standings on the Monday after the games. Good luck to everyone, and let's get a few more players.

Isaac, please let me explain something, If you throw the ball deep enough times, the receiver can adjust to a ball thrown somewhere in their general direction. He cannot throw a 7 yard slant pass because there is not enough time to adjust to the 6 yards he missed by.

Think of it in baseball terms, an outfielder can run 150 feet to track down a fly ball, but a third baseman is fortunate to move 5 feet to his right to snag a liner.

Rawn

vintagetoppsguy

If you throw the ball deep enough times, the receiver can adjust to a ball thrown somewhere in their general direction.

You credit Tebow's success to the receivers being able to adjust to poorly thrown passes? Seriously? I mean seriously? To counter your statement, couldn't the Steelers safeties have adjusted just as well to defend the passes?

You said he couldn't throw and you were proven wrong. Rather than admit you were wrong, you try to turn the situation around and make excuses. Let me ask you this. What does Tebow need to do to prove to you that he can throw?

David, ever hear of David Clyde? He could throwand throw amazingly hard, but he could not pitch. To me it's just physics, ten feet off target at 21 feet compared to 15 feet off target at 90 feet leaves more time for the receiver to get to the ball. Pitt'e defensive backs also played a horrible game. Troy P gets to the wrong place faster than anyone else in football.

I did catch the Boldin incident when watching the game. I think he fell on the play or something and the guy covering him (Quinn) was laying on him so he wouldn't continue on the play. Boldin seemed frustrated and slammed the other guy's head on the ground. Not the classiest thing to do on his part, but I think that's why he was upset.

Playoff football is a jump ball. Brady, no TDs and essentially outplayed by Flacco and the Pats win. The Ravens are known for D but it was a Pat with a game saving defensive play. And oh, those kickers.

Jeff- are you not even going to make a Superbowl pick? You can always pass the T-shirt down to the next guy even if you finish on top. You're in first place, it's your tournament to win or lose.

Pretty sure Jeff took the Giants. I took the the Patriots the very next pick. We were a little anxious, posted our picks before the totals were up.

I'm gonna rock that T. May get a shirt three sizes too small to accentuate my white trashness. :)

Best of luck to Jeff and thanks again to Barry for the good news every weekend.

The only team I really have a strong dislike for is the Eagles, but the Giants lately have been using Dallas as a doormat on their Superbowl runs. Eli's great - I wish him well.

This should be a great Superbowl.

My pick is the opposite of the leader, even though I think the Giants will win. I still can't win the pool since 2nd place had no choice either if he wants to win.

No hatred for any team, just much love for my childhood team and always will. From BU to the Fens to BC (even Tampa) to Harvard to Schaefer to Sullivan to Foxboro to CMGI/ Gilette and everywhere in between. Go Pats. Yes, they are my pick.

Oh, and there is a little dislike for the NYJ mostly due to the current admin but they are pretty insignifigant at the moment :)

I know it cannot compare to Spygate and Belichickgate and all the other Patriot gates but,,,, the NYJ were the first AFL team to win the SB.

If memory serves, Jeff was declining the T-shirt since he has one. I'll speak with Leon today and we'll figure this out. Jeff finished with an amazing 22 out of 23 points, missing only one wild card game and then running the table. How did he do it? I think he got the answers ahead of time, but I can't prove it. Hey Jeff,
Congratulations. I didn't follow everything but it sounds like you did a remarkable job of guessing. On this particular game I want to make it where the winner (you) at least gets something, understanding another T-shirt isn't what you want. If you have a paypal address I will gift you $25 for the win...or you can email me your address at leonl@flash.net and I will put a $25 check in the mail for you. It's not much but it's something. It could buy a decent lunch for you......thanks to Barry for doing this and thanks to all who played....best regards

Jeff- This just in (below)!!! A very kind Net54baseball member (Phil) sent me this note- I hope you will take Phil up on his offer to make this more fun and in the future we will probably offer this as a 3rd option. (cash, T-shirt or Trophy)

I was reading the postings about Jeff who won the football pool and did not want a t shirt or your offer of $25.
Well, I own a trophy shop and thoroughly enjoy Net54. I am willing to donate a small football trophy for this competition. I can send it directly to Jeff if he wants one. Let me know your thoughts. It would be a nice small gold cup w/ a football runner on top with some engraving.I don't want anything in return, just thought it would be a good idea.
Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,
Phil Ellis
