As a followup to an earlier thread about player identification of a Carl Horner Boston baseball player cabinet card:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/370570587353?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1431.l2649#ht_1727wt_1344

I now have a few questions regarding these Horner cabinet cards:

1. What do you think of this ending price of $898.00? Too Low? Too High? Just about right?

2. What do these usually go for if they are from a popular card, i.e. T206, etc? How much for a more common player like above?

3. How rare are these? How many of each would have been produced?

4. Is there any kind of checklist of these anywhere?

Finally, show some if you got 'em.

I thought that price was far too high. An SGC 60 McGann sold for just over $600 last year. Although this cabinet has the dark mount and a nice photo.

$898 is a little low especially since the auction was outed to thousands of potential bidders. I actually think (whether it was intentional or not) the guy who outed the auction benefitted from his post by slipping in the thread that he had a $3000 ceiling bid (which would be way too high) so several people, myself included, just went ahead and said "screw it, some crazy guy outed the auction and announced his crazy ceiling bid so why even bother" and then it went low. Just my opinion. The White Bordered ones are more popular and sell in the $1200-$2000 range but with Needham being a popular player this was legitimately a $1000-$1500 cabinet so $898 is on the low side for this item.

Edited to add that the McGann you are refering too is not a Horner Portrait photo which are FAR more popular than the batting poses like the one in BL & Goodwin. In the past White Border Horners have topped $3500 for single common players that were portraits.

A Johnny Bates white border portrait graded an SGC 40 sold for $861 in a Goodwin auction last year. I still think this cabinet went high especially since the photo of Needham did not appear on a card.

IMHO the price was pretty close to right

There is no doubt at all that these have come down to earth in the last few years. I bet there are far more examples of Horners selling for $1000-$1500 then there are examples that have sold for less than $1000 still though. I have owned (10) White Border Horners and have never got less than $1000 except for one that was severely damaged and I still got $850 for it. Photos are weird and you never know, but I would have guess $1000-$1400 before the auction ended so $890 is a touch less than I thought but not by a huge amount.

Check out his M116 card. It looks like the same image.

I think Jason was joking about his $3000 ceiling bid.

I think Jason was joking about his $3000 ceiling bid.

Besides, if people really believed him, there would be a few clowns (not to be confused with 'self-righteous' clowns) who would throw in a $2,900 bid just to show him. That apparently did not happen.

I thought he probably was joking BUT if he wasn't and two people put in bids of 2995 just to screw with him then someone walks away actually paying that for the item. I think it was enough to scare a few people off even though I did get the impression he was kidding.

No, they then retract their bids.

I will out myself as the underbidder at 888
I think it is a nice piece and sometimes we get too caught up with is this too high or low
If you like it just buy it (or try)
Besides it takes a long time to find something decent on there
You kind of have to go for it then

But I think $888 is a good low retail level

I believe when the winning bidder gets this "cabinet" he will find it to be of little to no value. I saw it last week and am pretty sure it's one of the Ohio/Indiana fakes. Could be wrong but I don't think so. It does not have the right look. Having handled and still having quite a few of these, it just does not have the right look. As most will know, there are multitudes of Carl Horner mounts available on ebay and elsewhere, where any kind of photo could be applied, just my gut thought when I first saw it. For the buyers sake, I hope I'm wrong.
