This thread is for T206 collectors. Your monster number is the number of unique cards you own out of 524 with the following rules:

240 points for Honus Wagner
80 points each for Plank, Doyle NY NATL & Magie
1 point for everyone else.

The highest monster number is therefore 1000.

Occasionally I receive inquiries from collectors who just can't stand the notoriety that comes with having a posted Monster Number. I do respect their "unwarranted" need for privacy though.

The goal of this thread was never to identify where all 2,834,216 cards reside, but going forward I will offer an "Anonymous" listing option. Only you will know who you are, as I will try to forget. Of course this option will require that your posting be done in private, via PM, with the doors closed.

If there is demand for this new service, it may be necessary to add a number, letter or punctuation to your listing. If possible, I will even offer an emoticon option such as "Anonymous ". Just let me know in private, if you are interested in this service. I'll be home tonight.

Condition and back variations are not factors in your basic monster number.
Depending on interest back monster numbers (i.e. Polar Bear Monster numbers) could be considered in the future.

If you have duplicates, they are considered 2nd sets. Each set you own has its own Monster number.

For example I currently have 555 total cards, including 36 duplicates and 1 triplicate.
I do not own any of the Big Four. Therefore, my monster numbers are 518 for Set 1, 36 for Set 2 and 1 for Set 3.

Let's just get started with your highest Monster Number only. I am also suggesting that you share scans of a few of your cards.

https://www.collectorfocus.com/images/show/frankbmd/t206-sgc/11684/cobb-green-portrait

http://www.collectorfocus.com/images/show/frankbmd/t206-psa/18657/bresnahan-bat-hof-cb

No prizes, but I will tabulate and post a listing of everyone's Monster Number here in the original post and update the list periodically forever or until the cows come home, whichever comes first.

All that's needed is a number with scans if you care to add them. The Honor system will apply and you need not worry about a visit from the
Monster Number Gestapo. :D

Great topic. I've always thought about a points system based on how rare a card is or how rare the back is etc. A system full of multipliers. Endless possibilities. Cobb Green vs. Red, Polar Bear vs. Lenox, VG vs. EX. Bonus points for Wagner, Plank etc. SLers - OM vs. Piedmont. I wish I had the time to develop a program to do this - I once had the time... I've seen websites and spreadsheets that kinda do this.
Based on the OP's topic - I'm at about 480... Just a bunch of 1 pointers...

If I count extras I can add another 300+ cards. Here are some of the PSA examples in my set....I do this only bum Sloate out I know he was getting tired of T206's on the board. :)

John, I love the way you've paid such careful attention to color, registration and white borders. They all look great.

I had no idea a restorer had gotten hold of a T206 Plank. Personally, I have no problem at all with restoration - it's considered an improvement in almost every other collecting environment - it's just the ambiguous 'AUTH' that troubles me. Your Plank looks great. I was just messing around with the Plank comment - is there really a companion to the Gretzky Wagner that was done in the same timeframe?

Scott, thanks I have spent years cherry picking tossed back 6's for 4's in some cases doubt it will be noticed if and when I sell but it made a difference to me.

Yes there is in fact a sheet mate to our hobby's most famous trimmed card. One of the few cards I regret not pulling the trigger on in my life. :(

Noticed how Plank is AUTH/Altered and our hobby icon is a PSA 8 both came from the same sheet go figure...got to love this hobby. :)

I would like to reach 520 someday and my goal for the end of this year was 260. Picked up #260 last month after 4.5 years of working on the Monster.

So as of today, Set #1--260

As far as Set #2 or #3, it would take to long to figure that out since I have a lot of multiples of Cleveland players with different backs and I'm doing a back set along with my basic set. If I hadn't bought duplicates and certain backs of some players my number would be at 380.

Passion or Obsession........its a thin line. ;)

would you mind checking the backs of your Piedmonts, Old Mills and Hindu backed cards to see how many and who has a rubber stamp from Howe McCormick, 500 W. Main St., Gainesville, Fla? I know I've pestered/bothered/annoyed most of you previously, but this seems to be the largest gathering of T206 collectors on the board at one time in one spot, so thought I'd beat the dead horse again. If you're interested in selling/trading, please let me know. If not, I'd just like to know what exists out there. I keep a list of all the known examples out there, so I would still have something to pursue, and I've learned my lesson ... I'll keep any replies to myself.

I note your inquiry regarding an existentialist affirming that zero should probably be dropped as a qualifying set. I'm sure you well know that the existentialist ideology is far from a monolithic perspective so there is really no univocal response to this issue. A Sartrean nihilist might well direct us that zero is as qualifying as any other since the true qualifier is what meaning occurs as being for itself in terms of intentionality rather than from being in itself in stasis. A Heideggerean might well say that zero should be dropped because meaning must arrive epiphenomenally and since there is no true phenomenon
with respect to zero other than our composition of an external linguistic verifier, then zero is dropped by its very nature. A Kierkegaardean existentialist would be open to zero's deserving qualifying status since meaning often arises out of nothing, en vacuo, and deserves status for its
inherent creative impulses. I hope this is helpful to you, Frank.
Many thanks for this extra facet to your T206 question---which although an aside---was quite
ingenious of you.

If you're gonna go with a point system, why not use the PSA weight system? Having a Hall of Famer, or Southern Leaguer should easily count for more than having a common. Obviously the Wagner, Plank and Magie should count for a bit more than 10 points though..

The concept could get very complicated with Hall of Famers, Southern Leaguers, different backs and different grades, etc, etc, etc.

I wanted to keep it simple enough to get quick responses not requiring a calculator. I considered the PSA weighting system, but found it a bit to complicated for a quick answer and weighting Wagner a 10 just isn't fair.

My other goal was to have a maximum score of 1000, which has not yet been reported. The thread seems to be getting a good response and your input is appreciated.

Merry Christmas to all.

To keep it simple, everything should get a '1'. To go one additional level, you could have the three obvious tiers (O'Hara and Demmitt St. Louis are tier 3), and still keeping it simple, you could add a fourth tier of items such as Elberfeld/Washington, Kleinow/Boston, SL'ers with Old Mill backs, etc.

The above would be simple. Adding back multipliers would make it difficult for some board members to do the math.

In any event, your thread is fun, but if you really want to tabulate results, you need to make it more realistic.

Given that this card is already stuck with an 'AUTH-Altered' designation, wouldn't it be worth getting such a restoration company to re-paint the erased background area?

If it were my card, I think I would.

I like seeing the variation of set numbers. I have started and stopped "The Monster" several times since the mid eighties and know how it feels to be getting close as well as just beginning. About a year ago I sold close to 300 and held on to only one........Lundgren PD350. Now, I'm approaching the set by teams and completing the Cubs for at least the 20th time. It's too much fun to ever be done.

Besides age before beauty, and boy is Dan old....BTW on all these lists I keep getting stuck next to McKee like a bad family dinner. :)

The Monster Number lives on.

Glad to see the Monster number back on page 1. My number is now 489.

I am currently in Thailand for three weeks, but will update my list upon my return in February. Have limited Internet access here.

Thanks to John for updating the list in my absence.

I haven't been able to find any T206s in Chiang Rai. Anyone know of any card shops in Bangkok, my next stop?

I will not hold my breath.

I'm at 600, set plus Magie. Just make sure you put Ted ahead of me for the same reason Dan is ahead of wonka. My second set is at 133 because I'm too lazy to sell doubles I got in lots(and I haven't bought a t206 since 2004 so it's not a new lazy)

I'm at 11 now, from the criteria. At one time, I had 17 cards, but had to sell all but four. I have since started to re-acquire some of those that I originally sold. All mine are raw, and being on a limited budget, I buy what I like (pose, etc.); thus, I have very few portraits. All are in the Fair-to-Good range. I recently picked up my first Polar Bear back!

Some I've sold that I'd like to re-acquire:
Weimer, Birmingham, Murphy (horizontal), Wiltse (portrait with cap), McQuillan (I had both a Tolstoi and Piedmont at one time).

Those I had, sold, and have no interest in re-acquiring:
Mattern, Lindaman, Knabe

One attainable goal I've set for myself is acquiring all the horizontal cards.

Been collecting since 1977; started by buying cards in Fair condition for 50 cents from Richard Gelman's Card Collectors Company. How I miss it.

Monster Number, and intriguing idea. Thanks for posting it.

1000 is a intrinsically pleasing maximum number; it's like batting a thousand. I agree with that back there about not counting zero, 1 to 1000 is 1000 possibilities, 0 to 1000 is 1001 possibilities. If zero were to count, then everyone on the planet would have a set, most of them zero sets... Methinks we begin the count at one, like Brother Maynard read from The Book of Armaments, Chapter 2...

Would a fellow with 80 common cards swap them for a Plank? Yes. Then the Plank should count more than 80, the commons less than 1, or both. Similarly, would someone swap 240 commons far a Wagner? Oh, Yes. Then that should be adjusted, too. And aside from dollar value, the Demmitt and O'Hara cards would limit the number of 1000 sets, they should have a bit of weight, too.

I figure this process is way too far along for folks to readily accept a recalibration of the process. But it is justified, don't you think?

I like the number 1,000, but you can come up with that number easily by giving some of the variations weight, without straining anyone's brains.

Here's some PSA pop numbers:

Doyle - 10
Wagner - 32
Plank - 64
Magie - 92
O'Hara St. Louis - 113
Demmitt St. Louis - 125
Lundgren KC - 162
Dahlen Brooklyn - 177
Brown Washington - 184
Lundgren Chicago - 187
Smith Chicago and Boston - 188
Elberfeld Washington - 193
Dahlen Boston - 198
Kleinow Boston - 237
Cobb Green - 550

Excuse me, but thou err'est. Brother Maynard (Eric Idle) did not read from The Book of Armaments. He stood to the left of the reader (Michael Palin):

... As best as I can tell, it was "Brother Maynard's Brother" that did the reading ...

Excellent Frank! I've always wondered how the reader should be referred as. "Brother Maynard's Brother" does seem appropriate, in a Python-esque sort of way.

I believe we can further revise the verses from the Book of Armaments, Chapter 2 for the purpose of this thread:

"1000 shalt be the Monster Number, and the Monster Number shalt be 1000, no more, no less. 1001 shalt not be the Monster Number, neither shalt the Monster Number be 999. 1002 is right out."

:p

btw, my Monster Numbers are:

First Set - 600 (Magie)
Second Set - 518 (all are different backs than the First Set)
Third, Fourth, Fifth, etc sets - In progress with different backs than the First and Second Sets, but I haven't tallied them up (Brown Hindu Southern Leaguers are the toughies I'm trying to find to fill out the third set, so it's going to take a while!)

For back specific Monster Numbers I can break up the above into a Polar Bear set of 250 (Complete), a Piedmont 150 set of 233 (counting Magie, but lacking Wagner & Plank), a partial P350 set of 321, a partial SC350F30 set of 172, etc.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm feeling a bit peckish so I'm off to feast upon lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals and fruit bats and ... perhaps I might just have some spam spam spam cheese and spam.

I meant to respond to this around the holidays when I first noticed it. I have 520 (set minus big 4) completed, about 15 dupes left (sold and/or traded many), so 535 in total I guess. Took 2-3 years to complete - didn't get serious about it until I counted up that I had half.

* All are graded - mid-grade - most all are grade 4 (50) thru 6 (80), a few 3's
* Most all are SGC, PSA or BVG, a couple GAI's
* Mostly common backs, some tougher SOV 460's, Tolstoi, Cycle, AB, etc.
* No elite back Uzit, Broad Leaf, C-Brights, Drum, etc
* First Net54 purchase: Walter Johnson Port in a SGC60
* Last card: Demmitt STL (SGC40)
* Favorites: Elberfeld Wash Port w/OM back (PSA4 - looks much nicer)
* Dahlen Brooklyn in SGC60, Cobb Green (PSA3), any SOV 460 back
* Not Favorites: Bliss (looks like he just stole something), Spike Shannon

I like the '1000' magic number, but would still like to see the other two members of the 'big six' get some credit. Maybe shave a little off Wagner and give it to Demmitt and O'Hara - won't affect the Wagner-owners, as they would have all three.

Scott, i will offer the following proposal named the Forrest Modification

Currently / Proposed

Wagner 240 / Wagner 200
Plank 80 / Plank 80
Doyle 80 / Doyle 80
Magie 80 / Magie 80
Demmitt SL 1 / Demmitt SL 21
O'Hara SL 1 / O'Hara SL 21

I am asking for feedback from those with posted Monster Numbers.

If you have reported 1 or more Monster Numbers, you get 1 vote.
(Rawn doesn't get 10 votes.)

Arguably this will lead to other suggestions, such as giving more weight to the Doyle card, giving additional credit for rare backs, autographs or grades.
i make this proposal with trepidation. I don't want to head down a slippery slope of endless requests for change. The success of this thread is its simplicity and my vote is "Leave It Alone" and I'm sure Scott's vote will be "Change It". Views of this thread are over 5000 and it is on the 7th page of over 1000 pages of total threads, based on total views. I say if it's not broken, don't fix it.

For the sake of this vote, if you suggest further modifications, your vote will be disqualified. Majority rules. Voting will end midnight Sunday CDT.

If this passes and I hope it does not, all Monster Numbers of 520 will become 560. Monster numbers less than 518 will remain unchanged unless a Demmitt or O'Hara variation is reported. Monster Numbers of 680 will become 720. If there is a doubt about these variations, notify me or the thread for clarification.

If this fails and I hope it does, no modification will be made. The polls are now open. Simply respond "Leave It Alone" or "Change It". Disinterest in this poll will be interpreted as favoring the "Leave It Alone" group.

The decision of the JUDGE will be final.:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Scott, i will offer the following proposal named the Forrest Modification

Frank, by naming this modification after me, you have further biased the poll - you have to remember: anyone who does not know me from the old days sort of hates my guts, simply for having a website with 'T206' in the name, regardless of the fact that it was started in 2002.

...and this is about T206's.

I agree with the fact to goes up in point demmitt and ohara but you take the 40pt at the wrong place. For me wagner must keep his 240 pt. Magie can be reduce at 40 and give 40 pt to demmitt and ohara.

A new feature is also being added with the current Monster number List being added to Post #1 at the being of this thread. You will no longer have to search recent posts to find the list. Thank you Bruce for this suggestion.

Thanks to all the Net 54 Members, who have contributed by sale or trade to my recent push to complete the Monster. I have reached 509 and may pick up another card or three, but realize fully that a Monster Number of 1000 is a fantasy for essentially all of us, hence the appropriate moniker "Monster".

As the sole creator of this thread, I accept full responsibility for both the simplicity of the MN and realize the imperfections inherent in any system that attempts to quantify anyone's monster. There does not seem to be a mandate for change or modification. It will remain as is.

I will continue to update results here on Post #144 as they are reported.
From time to time I will move the current list to the end of the thread as I am doing now, but only when it is on the first page. I will not bump the thread myself as I'm sure there are some who are tired of seeing it. But it will pop up again I trust.

One final observation that some of you have mentioned is the frustration of increasing your monster number only to see your ranking decrease, because of the addition of new sets above you. I share this frustration with you and would recommend The Myth of Sisyphus by Camus, an essay on the philosophy of the absurd. Sisyphus is a figure of Greek mythology who was condemned to repeat forever the same meaningless task of pushing a boulder up a mountain, only to see it roll down again. The essay concludes, "The struggle itself...is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy."

I'm happy and do not regret my efforts to slay the Monster. Keep collecting my friends.

From the desk of the Monster Number Director:

1. Adding and updating the list at the beginning of the thread seems to be going well. I think it is easier to find in one location. Apparently monster collectors are not having problems with this change.

2. I have been dating changes to the master list from the beginning and have decided to add the day of each individual's last update to the list. You are free to update as frequently as you like. But if you look at the list and realize your number is out of date, it will serve as a prompt to post an update.

3. Although I'm sure some of you tire of seeing this thread bounce back repeatedly, feedback that I have received has been uniformly positive. The current system is easy for me to update. The results are in a consistent location, and I do not have to bump the thread to add updates.

4. Any suggestions about reformatting the results will be considered. I'm working from a Macbook Pro using Numbers. To copy and paste the four column updates requires that the collector column be in the fourth position. Otherwise things do not line up well. As it is now, things line up well enough, but if there is a better way to transfer spreadsheet data to a Net54 post, I'm willing to try it.

5. Thanks to all for their participation. Active collectors are movin' on up, but remember to notify me, if you sell as well. I think that I have 510 and 511 in my sights, but I'm not going to tell you where I am looking. You'll just have to keep looking at the list to see if I'm gaining on you.

who is your 520 ?

O'hara St. L. There are a couple of us looking for one and I know if I just pull the trigger I can buy one (there are a couple albeit overpriced ones on ebay). It's all part of the ride...I expect i'll pick one up by the national.

My set is a general mess with lots of "cards with character." My first goal is to get the spaces filled and then start upgrading with an eventual goal of having a set in good-vg condition. I see it as a lifetime thing, an adventure to enjoy and I hope to enjoy the upgrading process as much as I have enjoyed the building process.

The things I have most enjoyed collecting are friends. I would have probably never met Ted Z, Mac Webber, Marc Delpercio and many others were it not for this process.

This weekend, I plan to spend a couple of hours with my son going through the set, making sure I didn't miss a common somewhere (in a set this size it happens) and making a list of my hideous two dozen, the most immediate and profound beaters.

I too find it strange how attractive the beaters become as you near the end of your journey. Cards I wouldn't have looked at several years ago are now jewels that I covet. My next card that I covet looks like a real dog. See update.

I'll go into how I build my set in more depth in a couple years, but here are the keys:

1) I bought my first T206 in the early 70s from Card Collector's Company. It was a Snodgrass batting.

2) I bought a little over 100 t206s for $100 in the early 80s. it included minor hall of famers and a few southern leaguers. Average condition was fair.

3) I started working on a set of hall of famers which happened to land me with a lot of T206s...including Johnson, Brown, Matty x 2.

4) I owned a shop in the early 90s. Had no intention of building a set, but worked on it some. Picked up a nice red cobb then.

5) About three years ago, I started working on a mini-monster, with the intent of getting one pose of each player represented. I was probably around 250 at the time.

6) Got into it and decided what the heck. Marc Delpercio was a very good traded. I got a couple of the variations and just decided to go for the 518.

7) a large deal...the only card I really, really regret parting with in this process (T206 AB Gandil that was a beauty) with Ted Z got a large number of the remainder knocked off...it was one of those trades that was good for both parties...

8) A trade with Chris Buckler for a trimmed Demmitt made me decide to go for the 520.

9) Stayed focused. Other than my Marshall University stuff, I have not bought much besides T206s on my want list for the past two years.I have two sets "on deck" but I think I will be working on my T206s for life.

Pretty much gets me to where I am...

verry interesting , so you work on this set since the 70's .... before my birth :) lol

It is a long way travel to build a t206 set, in the last time i bought many cards but i will probably take a little brake in the nexts months.. pderhaps buy a couple t206 a month but no major purchase until the end of the year....

I will probably collect T206 for the rest of my life too...

...will probably take a little brake in the nexts months..

Nice double-entendre :)

I always find it interesting to hear how a collector has gone about building his T206 set. The T206 nay-sayers have valid points, but there are so many interesting ways to go about building this set, and other than those who are building 'by flip number', I haven't seen two people yet who have gone about it the same way. And once you have attained your magic number, you can then replace cards to add additional nuances (upgrade, tough backs, etc.)

Thanks, I really just made the decision to go for it, while I wait for more signed HoF '39s to pop up.

I've been more of a hodge Podge kind of collector. Some autos, some rookies, some HOF, football and baseball vintage and modern. Really never tied myself down to a "type" but since joining the board, I see how many people have really enjoyed the monster, so why not go for it. I can't imagine ever buying a Wagner, and probably not a Plank, but everything else is attainable I figure, if I give it a decade or two.

Some card is harder than other , like the wagner, but if we keep fixed on a goal, everything can be happen

John,

wonkaticket (2) is being inserted at a level of 518. If a big four card is included, please advise. All below this set will regret dropping a notch, myself included.

I have reached 511 with the addition of two more cards in the mail.

Future generations should be referred to my tombstone or urn to learn of Monster number lore, where a video device will be imbedded to allow mourners to read the thread in its entirety.;)

Add my daughter melody woodfin to the list at 148. She just turned 7 in march:). She can get her own Wagner but I might help with the rest in low grade condition. She is always excited to add to the set.

Interesting concept. Don't really agree with the weighting commons and HOFers the same, though. I don't collect anything except HOFers and popular players. I will likely never exceed 100 T206 cards. As of now my # is 69 but 51 of them are HOFer cards.

I think my monster # would be 81.... I have a long way to go.

Not sure about most expensive and least expensive....I forgot what I've paid for many cards, I'll go with these- and I may have it wrong- I may have paid more for the Lajoie/with bat but for some reason I can't upload the picture anymore. And, going off of a bad memory, I think I may have paid around $29.00 for the White?

Cool thread-thanks-

Sincerely, Clayton

Nelson,

Did you know that Demmitt and O'Hara together collected a total of 7 hits after being traded to St. Louis teams in 1910? Interestingly both then played in Canada for several years as regulars, O'Hara in Toronto and Demmitt in Montreal. Demmitt made it back to bigs a couple times in later years, but O'Hara never did. I thought you might like your card even more knowing that Demmitt probably played more games in Montreal than anywhere else in his major and minor league career.

I haven't posted in a long time so sorry for bumping an older thread, but I figured I'd throw my name into the ring too.

I am up to 71 on my T206 set none of which are any of the high $ cards.

All but 5 are raw, ungraded.

At this rate (I've been collecting them off and on for probably 22 years now), my grandchildren MAY be able to finish the set some day! :(
