1956 topps. . .

I would like to know who's collecting it and what is your motivation for picking that particular set to collect?

I collect 1956 Topps because it is the year I was born and I love the horizontal format. I acquired a high grade Mantle, Mays and Aaron a few years ago and that was the start. I am 14 cards from completion.

It was the first baseball set that I purchased any packs for as a kid. I looked at and read the backs so much that I can still look at a card today and remember
what the cartoon on the back is. When the day comes to sell off my collection of sets from 1948 to 1963 this will be the set I keep.

2 reasons...
Reason #1: 1975 Topps MVP cards. I was 11 years old and it was the first time I ever got to see what the older Topps sets looked like. The 1956 cards, especially the magnificent Mantle card made a very big impression.
Reason #2: Because there was no Bowman, I find that 1956 & 1957 have the best selection of great players. To me, 1956 was superior because it included Jackie and Bob Feller. If only there was a Stan Musial card.

I did the set and pack simply because it was part of doing a Topps run, 1948 and 1951 to 2011

I have been tempted to but at this stage have resisted building the whole set. I think the action shots in the background and the headshot in the foreground are very eye appealing. This set has a ton of golden age HOFers (minus Musial). I have a Mantle and Clemente, and would like to add a Mays like David's (VintageToppsGuy) and probably more. Also, about 5 years ago when I first got into vintage collecting I was at a show in NC and an experienced dealer had just bought a '56 raw set from a walk-in and he gave me the opportunity to take a look at some of the set and every card was razor sharp/pack-fresh. I didn't know much about the set or its worth but was blown away buy the condition. As I walked back around later he had a light on and glasses affixed and was clearly pulling cards to sub. Oh if only I had the cash and know-how to have been able to make an offer to buy the whole set before they were sent away to be entombed.

I have a page on my website dedicated to 1956 Topps baseball cards. It's a very popular set, especially with Brooklyn Dodgers fans because it depicts the team that defeated the New York Yankees in 1955 to win the first World Series for Brooklyn.

I bought a nearly complete raw set in the late 80's, stuck it in the closet and finished it at the frist National I attended in 2001. Recently picked up this wrapper to go with it.
